I also have ancestors from Barton, Digby County, N. S. My Wetmore great-great grandparents immigrated from Port Gilbert, Digby County, N. S., to Boston, Mass., in 1870.
In researching the location of Port Gilbert, I found that an act of the Canadian parliament changed the name of Port Gilbert to Barton in 1905. However, I have also found records, dating well before 1905, for example McAlpine's city directories, that refer to Barton as Barton as early as 1871. Can anyone shed any light on this name change? Did it make official what was already happening?
Is anyone aware of any historical information about ship-building in this area? My great-great (and great-great-great) grandfathers were both ship carpenters in this area. The younger gentleman lived across the street from the present day Savary Provincial Park. The older gentleman lived in North Range, from the 1830s through 1852, when he immigrated to Hamilton, Mass.
Thanks, Tom Wetmore
