Elizabeth Brown m. Elijah Henwood
Looking for information on Elizabeth Brown who married Elijah Henwood in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia. Elizabeth may be Indian (Choctaw or Micmac). They married in the late 1700's. Elijah was born abt. 1760 in possibly Cornwall, England and Elizabeth was born abt.1772. She died May 30, 1866 in Horton, King's Co., Nova Scotia. If you can help, please email me. I am stuck at this link in the family. Thanks, Lori

I've been seeking this information since 1997 and still have this huge stonewall. Would love to have someone point us in the right direction.

Dear Lori and Norma:
Such was the degree of ignorance in 1802. On June 20 1802, Elizabeth and Elijah gave birth to a daughter, Hannah. On the birth record, the mom is noted as 'mulatto'. This was a standard designation for a native-born mother who gave birth, with a Caucasian father. Let's not tell Cher, and other great children of Natives and Caucasians! But then, maybe 'mulatto' was not a bad word in 1802.
That's all I have on these two. I have been working on the Henwood's a couple of generations later, who interconnect with Noiles and others in my main family lines.
Best Wishes, Richard Ripley Kitchener, Ontario.

I have an Elijah Henwood in my family tree and am trying to figure out if he is the one you have mentioned. mine had a son named Jesse who married an Annie Pettigrew. Does this sound familar? My great grandmother came from this line and grew up around Westbrook/Halfway River (Marie Beatrice Olsen, nee Rector, mom's name was Annie Henwood). The family used to tease her that she had Indian blood, but I have never figured out why.

Hi Richard...just following up on a niggling detail. Saw your post as I keep in frequent touch with Norma...we share this trail. I have seen actual record images of both Parrsboro Twp and St. George's records for baptisms (Hannah and mother Elizabeth are baptised at the same time) with no notations re: mulatto, however, a Don Lewis transcription does indicate the mulatto reference, and we continue to scour to find evidence that will lead us in the right direction. You mention a birth record in your post which provides yet another notation re: mulatto. Can you share with me what exactly that record is and where it can be found or viewed? We are having a dickens of a time attempting to find the paper trail on this and suspect only a DNA test will sort it all out! Neither can we find a record of Elizabeth and Elijah's marriage. Can you help me out? I'd most grateful and wish you much luck along your trails. Anne

Hi TG get in touch and i'll try to share what I have, my Great Grandparents were Frederick Gilbert Rector and Annie Jane Henwood. Their daughter Alice McLellan nee Rector is still alive, though she was in fact my great Aunt, I think she is the only one of the children alive, and was able to confirm her Mum's middle name of jane...my own Dad had furnished pretty much everything else that he knew about his grandparents. Annie and Fred named a daughter Beatrice, who I met as a youngster and knew only as Aunt Beatrice in Springhill. Several of us descendants are trying to sort out the "mulatto" heritage along this trail, I joke that only a DNA test will sort it out for good! Do email me and I'll be happy to share what I've found and vice versa. Cheers, Anne

Hi Anne, Well, it could be from Don Lewis's files. Really it has been so long that I forget the whole discussion. Just remind me again. Richard

Hi and thanks for checking my note, not sure what I can add to these prior postings...all the info we have is contained in that post from Norma and myself, with your comments as replies. That is the extent of our knowledge, just had hoped to find which record you had seen as our trail leaves without new clues or new ideas as to where to search and the ones we have aren't resolving it. Anything you can do to direct us?...maybe it was a transcription rather than record you were referring to...ah well. Felt it was important to ask in order to follow up, Cheers and Thanks regardless, Anne

There seems to be a bit of a mixup in this post. There is indeed an Annie Pettigrew (Ann Elizabeth b. 1847) who married a Jesse Henwood (b. 1827) but where it seems to g wierd is that Jesses' father is not Elijah but rather Jeremiah (b. 1803).
Now Jeremiah's father was Elijah so I just hope that you haven't missed out a generation

Thanks. Sorry..... Yes, I had skipped a generation there!
