John Jeffers & Mary Trevois - Have they figured out where he came from yet?

Still trying to find out more about the John Jeffers who married Mary Trevois.

"Then there is the John Jeffers who married Mary Trevois in 1779. He could sign his name - thus ruling out John of Boston, and Elizabeth of Parrsborough survived until 1825 - thus ruling out John from Rhode Island. John Jeffers & Mary Trevois both died early, leaving a young family who were dispersed among neighboring households."

This John Jeffers is my great, great, great, great grandfather. He was one of the original grantees of Truro, Nova Scotia. I have a copy of a deed from 1760 that lists him as Major(British) Jeffers, formerly of Roxbury, Massachusetts. He and Mary had several children, go here: http://www.canadagenweb.org/archives/ns/colcbook.txt Chapter LII for more. The name there is incorrectly listed as Jeffrey, but Jeffers is correct.

I received this from the Colchester Archives, Mr. Jim Smith, 9/26/2005:

"The original Grantee of the Township of Truro, 1765, is often referred to as John Jeffries, Jefries, Jeffreys, etc., instead of Jeffers. This undoubted Grantee belonged to Boston where he was in the mercantile trade. He was unable to sign his name (always employed an X) and his wife was named Mary. When he sold his 500 acres of Truro lands in 1768, he did so as John Jefries. He may have been the same as John Jeffers of Milton, MA who was married in Boston, also in 1768, to one Mary Fisher. As John Jeffers, he was obliged to sue the man whom he sold his Truro lands and in, 1773, as John Jeffers of Roxbury, MA, he ended up buying the land back from his debtor.

However, there is a John Jeffers from Rhode Island who was a Grantee of Newport Township in 1761 and whose name is associated with Parrrsborough Township. His wife's name was Elizabeth, and he was able to sign his name. He appears not to be our Truro Grantee.

Then there is the John Jeffers who married Mary Trevois in 1779. He could sign his name - thus ruling out John of Boston, and Elizabeth of Parrsborough survived until 1825 - thus ruling out John from Rhode Island. John Jeffers & Mary Trevois both died early, leaving a young family who were dispersed among neighboring households."

Hi John:
There was another John Jeffers in Nova Scotia who was a Captain in the Provincials. I know he was in Louisbourg in 1762. I do not believe he was my ancestor though. The timing is not correct with the info that I got from the deed.

Thanks for the update.
Fred

Sure, I will see if I can find it. If not, I can get another copy at the Public Archives in Halifax.
