Would anybody have any infomation on my great-great grandparents? They are Thomas Mattatal, B.1824 and D. 1901 in Tatamagouche, NS. and his wife Margaret Hingley B. May 11, 1837 in Tatamagouche. I'm really interested in her parents. Sincere appreciation for any info.

Hi, I don't know who the parents of Margaret Hingley were but I do have some background history on the Hingley family.

John Hingley 1725-1814 was one of the original grantees of the town of Truro who later removed to what is now Kemptown. He was originally from Barnstable, Massachusetts. He married Janet Archibald, 1750-1811, daughter of Samuel Archibald & Eleanor Taylor (my 6ggrandparents). In Arthur Miller's book about the history of Colchester County (available online), he states that John Hingley and Janet Archibald had 7 sons and 4 daughters. I have only been able to find reference to a few of their children:
- John Hingley married Jane Chambers
- Samuel Hingley married Jane Johnson
- James Hingley married Sarah Johnson
- David Hingley married Sarah Fulton
- Matthew Hingley
- Daniel Hingley
- Eleanor Hingley

Hope this is a bit helpful in your search!!

Hello, on this very snowy New England day! Just wanted to thank you for all the info on the Hingleys. I'm hoping that as I research the sons more I will finally get my answer. Arthur Miller's book looks to be very interesting also. Thanks for taking the time to help out. I greatly appreciate it.

You are quite welcome, cousin, from the freezing cold in Ottawa, Ontario!! Not sure the exact relationship but I believe that we both share common great...grandparents in Samuel Archibald and Eleanor Taylor and perhaps other relatives -- both of my parents were born and raised in Truro, Nova Scotia.
Regards,

Jane

Hi Jane,
Quite possible there is a common family line. I believe that either Matthew or Daniel, sons of John Hingley and Janet Archibald would be my 3xgrandmother's father. Still investigating to see if either of them were in Tatamagouche in 1837. My 2xgrandfather's death certificate said Margaret (Hingley) his mother was born in Tatamagoughe. I'll let you know if I find anything!

P.S. More SNOW here today. Keep it in Ontario!!

Regards,

Lyn

It was sometime about the close of this period that a
number of families settled on Sand Point. John and James
Hingley came from Salmon River, Colchester County.
They settled on the farm now owned by John T. Matatall.
James Hingley was an elder in the Tatamagouche Presby-
terian congregation. In his family were six sons: Hugh,
Neil, Alex., John, Robert, and Samuel. There also were
two daughters. All are now dead save the last, and one sister
who lives in the States. John Hingley had only one son,
who removed to the States.

The above is taken from an article written on "The History of Tatamagouche" which is available online -- it is an interesting read. Some of the families of Foreign Protestants, eg., Mattatall, Langille, etc. came from their original settlement in Lunenburg to the Tatamagouche area. I am also related to the Bezansons, Langilles, Marriettes, and Boutiliers who were also Foreign Protestants.

Have you tried contacting the Tatamagouche Heritage Centre for information? They can put you in contact with others researching ancestors in the Tatamagouche area.

Regards,

Jane

John Hingley, (son of John Hingley and Jannet Archibald) married Jane Chambers and removed from Truro to Tatamagouche. Their son, John Hingley, Jr. married Jane Maria Turnbull, and had children. Perhaps your Margaret (Hingley) Mattatall was one of them? As for Thomas Mattatall, one possibility is that he was a son of Mark and Margaret (MNU) Mattatall. They had a son named Thomas, b. 1825, but he married Mary Ann Slade. Could your Margaret have been a second marriage for him? Another possibility is that he was a son of Levi and Mary (Bigney) Mattatall. They had a son named James Levi Mattatall, b. 1824 who married Sarah/Sally Hingley in 1849. Maybe Thomas was a brother and he married a sister to Sarah Hingley? Both Mark and Levi Mattatall were children of my ancestors, John Peter and Catherine (Bigney) Mattatall. I descend from that couple's son, George who married Ann Catherine (a.k.a Nancy) Millard. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for all the new info. Now, I just have to sift through it all. My great-grandfather was Herbert Mattatall 1861-1943. His death certificate states that his father was Thomas Mattatall and his mother was Margaret Hingley. Thomas's father was Peter Mattatall 1782-1870 and Mary Ann Langille 1786-1871. All were born in Tatamagouche, NS. And the hunt goes on!!
