Thank you for the correction. Its funny, I was sure that it was Black Brook, but I checked Google maps and the cemeteries are literally around the corner from each other. Many of the ancestry info and even obituaries say Black Brook. I remember four burials as well and would have sworn it was one in the same. That's one of the reasons I have begun the process of tracing my roots, because memories fade and information becomes more and more unclear.

Thanks Again,
John

FYI, The Black Brook cemetery is about 5 km from the town of Port Morien. It is also the Catholic cemetery for the area serving St. Mary's parish. My grandfather (McDonald), grandmother and others are buried there. It is still an active facility.

Hi, I am sorry but I don't have too much info. I know that Annie was born around 1895 in Stephenville, Newfoundland to Frank Russell and Maggie White.

There was another brother Ernest Russell b. about 1890 and married an Annie Miller on 12 May 1912.

You can find these marriages at www.novascotiagenealogy.com

Also, you may want to check some Acadian history and records under Leblanc White and Roussel Russell. There was an Etienne LeBlanc who went to Stephenville around 1840.

Have you tried posting your message to the Newfoundland board?

Good Luck!!

Tom Boutilier and Hilda Gardiner / Port Morien, Birch Grove, Sydney

Hello again Ancestry board users, it's me again. This time I'm looking for information on a man named TOM BOUTILIER. Unfortunately, I have no other information on him other than his name, but there a few clues I can tell you that might just narrow him down.

The Tom Boutilier I am looking for was never married to, but had a few children with my great grandmother Hilda Gardiner (maiden name MacDonald). Hilda was one of the British Home Children, and was adopted and raised by Angus & Effie MacDonald of Port Morien. On Sept. 5th, 1911 she married John William Gardiner (brother-in-law of Harry Spracklin from Newfoundland). John Gardiner died in 1920 of tuberculosis and it was after this that Hilda and Tom Boutilier were together.

Rumor has it that Tom Boutilier had actually been a friend of John Gardiner. I know that John Gardiner was living in Dominion no. 6 (now known as Donkin) with Harry Spracklin as a boarder, and working in the coal mines at the time of his marriage to Hilda. Perhaps they worked in the mines together? I also know that Hilda and John's eldest son did not approve of his mother's relationship with Tom (them not being married, and all).

Hilda (MacDonald) Gardiner was born in approximately 1893 and died 1977.

Tom Boutilier may or may not have had another family, or been married to someone else. I really don't know... I'm not looking to cause trouble, or be a sh*t disturber, just searching for the truth. Based on my knowledge of the Boutilier's in Cape Breton, I have no doubts that Tom Boutilier is a descendant of Nicolas Bouteiller and Ursule Beuchot.

You can get the chronicle herald on line which is a paper from Halifax. If it is not in the recent obituaries you can write or call them for information. The cape Breton Post is the paper for Cape Breton and they are located in Sydney so you can call them as well. Have you tried google to do a search on Joseph MacKinnon.
IF they were from England go to ancestry uk or check the Nova scotia census if they live in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Hope that is some help.

Requesting Assistance Locating Birth Father - Albert Gillis, New Waterford

I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the correct place but I'm hoping that I may have some luck here. Here's the background:

My biological mother was JoAnn Young, born and raised in Glace Bay, NS. She was the daughter of Joe and Jean Young. She was their oldest daughter born in 1960, graduated from Morrison High School. She passed away in April of 2005. Because of my mother's MS, I was adopted by her parents when I was about 8 years old.

She had met my biological father in New Waterford where he was from between 1977-1979. They had a brief relationship and I was born in February of 1980. It wasn't until recently that I found that my father's name is ALBERT GILLIS and is from the New Waterford area, has five other children (two boys, three girls). I know that he has moved to Ontario but I am unsure exactly where. His father did pass away in 1999 but that's all I was told. I have no other names or information. I know that in 1999 he had phoned my parents requesting information about me but was told that I didn't want to know him which couldn't be further from the truth.

Please, if anyone has any information about the family, could they please pass it along. I would love to make contact with that side of family and, if they are agreeable, get to know them. I have three small children and I would like to be able to tell them about their family.

Thank you!

(MURRIN)....the new details I was sent is as follows: Saint John's Marriages>>Date: August 9,1903>>Place: Pouch Cove, Nfld.>>Name and surname: Lawrence FITZGERALD>>Age: 25>>Condition: Bachelor>>Occupation: Laborer>>Religion: Roman Catholic>>Residence: Northern Bay>>>>>>Name and surname-Ann MURRANT>>Age: 24>>Condition: Spinster>>Religion: Roman Catholic>>Residence: Pouch Cove, Nfld.>>Witnesses: John SHEA and Catherine MURRANT.

As this is the first bit of info regarding my GrGrandparents marriage & another spelling of my GrGrandmother's last name, I'm hoping to have contact with other member(s) who may be related or have information pertaining to these individuals.

Regards, :)

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Hello,

My query is re: MURRIN, Ann(e)...this is the name listed as my GrGrandmother on the m. cert. for her daughter/my grandmother, Helen "Nellie" Fitzgerald m. 1924 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia to my Grandfather, John Whelan of Colliers, NL.

From the info I've been able to obtain, my GrGrandparents - Ann(e) Murrin m. Lawrence Fitzgerald (he was b. abt. 1882 from Small Point/Kingston, Bay de Verde, Newfoundland). GrGrandfather Lawrence had a sister that married a "Shea" from Pouch Cove (or area) and this would be how my GrGrandparents met. Since my Grandmother was born in 1904, I'm thinking that their time of marriage would be abt 1900 - 1904.

I have no other info on my GrGrandmother, Anne(e) MURRIN - perhaps b. abt. 1880; m. abt. 1900 - 1904. Her daughter/my grandmother's m. cert. lists her place of birth as New Aberdeen, Nova Scotia; there's a son, Lawrence, b. 1907 listed on his m. cert. as St. John's, Newfoundland.

If any of my info is possibly familiar or if you could forward info to me, that would be great, I'm truly "stumped" with my GrGrandmother!!

Regards, :)

Charles Martin Pate’s birth and death records are in the records of Notre Dame de L’Assomption-the link you included in your query. He died January 9, 1881 age 13 years and 5 mos. He was born August 6, 1867
Since his mother and father were married Nov. 5, 1866, they didn’t have too long to wait for their first child, pretty much exactly 9 months! As you noted, his 2 brothers age 7 and 2 died within just a few days of him.

The 1876 death records that I got the stats from are on the Nova Scotia Archive site.

Burdette
www.novascotiagenealogy.ca
Life was very dangerous for children back then. Official records weren't kept in 1881 but I did a quick check of the death records for Richmond County Cape Breton in 1876. I checked just two page with about 18 entries each (approx. 36 deaths). Of those 23 were children under the age of 10. The numbers don't mean much but imagine checking the obituaries in your local paper and seeing that two-thirds of them were children under 10 years. It would be shocking to us now!! Of those about half died of diptheria.
Whooping cough killed another 5; scarlatina-4; and a couple of infants who died right after birth with no particular cause given.

The name Mary Anne changing to Marion interested me. We have a young woman at work who is from an Acadian family from Digby County. She also spells her name Marion but pronounces it Mary Anne. This may be an Acadian anomaly.

Hope this helps
Burdette

took some time off to have a new baby. But, have been trying to get back into it.

I was provided with the website http://jeannejoycestone.com/ArichatRecords.htm
from another member. Which has revealed some interesting things. I was wondering if I could review with you.

So, my GGM was "Marion" Potter. According to the baptism records she was actually "Marie Anne" and she was a twin.

Then I was looking into the death of the child "Charles", die young as you've mentioned in the past, suspect early sue to not on the census. In looking at this webiste, the family (James and Marie) had 3 children die within a week!!! There names were Henry, William and Charlae in 1881. What was going on at that time to kill 3 children?

Would love your insight.

Nova Scotia began civil registration for births in 1864, but registration lapsed after 1877, and records compiled during the period are incomplete. Registration resumed 1 October 1908, and the province has maintained records consistently since then. Birth typically contain information such as: name of child, birth date, gender, birth place, and year of registration.

William Henry Boutilier

I'm looking to trace the line of William Henry Boutilier born about 1904 in Glace Bay, NS. He was the son of Joseph Boutilier and Mary Anne MacIntyre, and husband of Marthea Gardiner (daughter of John Gardiner and Margaret Dilliway from England).

I am assuming he is a descendant of Nicolas Bouteiller (b. 1595 in Chagey, Montbeliard) and his wife Ursule Beuchot (b. about 1590), but haven't been able to find the connection.
