RIVER INHABITANTS / WEST BAY ROAD

Surnames: MacInnis, Gillis, Coffin, Larsen, others
Maggie MacInnis (widowed - do not know husbands name) was born approximately early 1840's. She had at least 3 children; Neil b. 1866, Sarah b. 1863?, Maggie Ann b. 1869?. They lived in River Inhabitants at least until the turn of the century, then lived in West Bay Road.

Neil MacInnis married Kate Gillis in 1889. They had at least 5 children; Margaret Mary b. 1889, John A. b. 1891, Sarah b. 1894, Angus b. 1896, Dan b. 1900.

I believe Sarah married a Beaton.

Margaret Mary married twice. Her first husband was named Coffin and they had two sons; John and Everett. John seems to have died/ disappeared early in life. Her second husband was Frank Larsen and they had two sons; Francis and Charles.

Margaret Mary moved to Boston, Massachusetts prior to 1920. She died in 1972 and is buried in West Roxbury, Ma. with her husband Frank.

I found Saint Margaret's Catholic Church in West Bay Road and found graves for the following;
Angus, d. 1938 was PVT in WWI
Dan, d. 1951
John, d. 1972
Sarah (MacInnis) Beaton, d. 1938

I also found a monument erected in horoh of Neil MacInnis and his wife Catherine MacEachern. Their children were listed as John, Margaret, Angus, Catherine, Kenneth and Jane. This Neil MacInnis was born in Scotland in 1778 and died in Cape Breton in 1852.

Mabou Pioneers has the following for this MacInnis family:
John MacInnis married Janet MacDonnel and had a son Farquhar.
Margaret MacInnis married Angus MacInnis (from another MacInnis family).
Angus MacInnis married Christy MacInnis. They had a son Allan who married Isabella MacMaster.
Catherine MacInnis married John MacEachern and they had a son Neil.
Jane MacInnis married Donald O'Brien.
Kenneth MacInnis- no spouse listed.

Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Who was Maggie MacInnis (1840's) and who was she married to?

Who was Kate Gillis' family?

How does the MacInnis family of River Inhabitants/West Bay Road connect with the Neil MacInnis and Catherine MacEachern family?

My Margaret (MacInnis) Larsen is said to be from West Bay Road. Are the MacInnis' buried in the church yard her siblings?

If anyone knows the answers to my questions, or has any other information, I would appreciate hearing from you. Thank You.

Hi Tony. Thank you for the suggestion.I do appreciate any and all sugestions.
I have actually been in touch with the Glendale Historical Society. I also purchased the book Cuir is Buain. I also discovered a family member, my father's cousin's wife. they were able to tell me quite a bit. My ancestor's are the "MacInnis-Queensville" family. Now my search continues since I only know that my G-Grandmother, Kate Gillis is from Frenchvale, Sydney. But that is a lot more information than I had. I am sure once I have time to go through the on-line census I will eventually be able to find out who her people are too.

I have taken a quick peek through the book 'To The Hills Of Boisdale: Pioneer Families of Boisdale, Cape Breton and Surrounding Areas' (Fr. Allan J MacMillan - 1986) and I have failed to find Kate Gillis from Frenchvale. That doesn't mean that she wasn't there.
Your best bet is to contact Fr. Allan yourself as he has made a pretty good study of the area. He is currently stationed in St. Andrew Parish, Judique, Inverness County) but he can be reached at liuichconc@ns.sympatico.ca.
Good luck

My husband and I are planning a trip to Cape Breton in September. My husbands Father was taken from a McInnes family when he was a baby. Through DNA, we found that he was related to a Catherine McInnes Who Married a MacDonald. She was born in 1820 I think her fathers name was Angus. Ancestry lists the spelling with Mc. Anxious to find out more. Also Dons fathers family were migrant farmers in Mo. USA. We do not know their names This is why we need to trace the McInness' name. Thank You, Norma Angel Churchwell.
