The Irish in Rocky Bay, McGrath Origins
Hi: I am looking for the county/town of origin for Michael, John and James McGrath who arrived in Rocky Bay circa 1820. Their friends/neighbors and country mates are Daniel Doyle, Mathew Lee and William Britton. The 1838 census shows Michael McGrath abt 44yrs of age and married to Catherine Comerford both natives of Ireland. James McGrath, native of Ireland, is 30yrs of age and just married to Mary Kenny from down the road. John doesn't appear on any of the enumeration records? The Irish tended to immigrate in groups so I'm hoping to find a connection through the research of associated families. I have lots of additional info on the McGrath's and a bit on the Doyle's, Lees and Britton's. On my next trip to the archives I am researching the Jardine's, Kehoe's, Keating's and Conway's to see where these lines will take me. I have info to share.

Re: The Irish in Rocky Bay, McGrath Origins
Have you made any progress in researching the McGrath, Keating, and Doyle clans. I know that Daniel Doyle and his wife Mary Nolan (Knowland) and their children immigrated to Nova Scotia about 1814/1815 through, I believe, Liverpool, as their youngest child was reported as born in Liverpool. They are my great, great, great grandparents. But I cannot find where they originated in Ireland. My great grandfather Doyle always told my mother that they were from County Claire. But some suggest they came from the Wexford area.
My great great grandfather Nicholas Keating was born about 1800, and married Nancy Anne Kavanaugh, daughter of Lawrence Kavanaugh, son of Laurence Kavanaugh (merchant). When they married, they were given land by her father in Rocky Bay. My grandmother was Margaret Keating, daughter of Nicholas Keating. She moved to the US sometime in the 1920's or so, I guess. Residing in Gloucester, Mass, until her death in 1965.

Re: The Irish in Rocky Bay, McGrath Origins
Hi Steven: I'm not sure how much background you have on the family. Ann Kavanaugh is the daughter of Laurence Kavanaugh of Rocky Bay/Isle Madame. Are you related to this family? There are several other Laurence Kavanaugh's who descend from the original Laurence Kavanaugh(b. abt. 1725) of County Waterford,Ireland-Louisbourg, Cape Breton and finally to St.Peter's,Richmond County, Cape Breton. The Kavanaugh line is important to Cape Breton History but can be very twisty. Ann married Nicholas Keating abt 1830 in Rocky Bay, Richmond Co. They had 7 children and two of them married McGrath's and their descendants are my uncles, aunts, cousins, etc. The lot that Nicholas and Ann lived on in Rocky Bay originally belonged to Ann's father and borders on the original McGrath lot where my gggrandfather lived. This is one of the family lines that I am researching.
