Hello Angus,

Thank you for replying to this post. The book The History of Antigonish County of Nova Scotia by Rev Rankin mentions your family on page 216.

Rankin mentioned that the MacDonalds (Borrodale) of South River pioneers were Hugh, Angus, Donald and Alexander.

It then goes onto mention Pioneer Angus MacDonald married Miss MacDonald (Martin) and had sons: John, Hugh, Martin and John.

I believe the wife of Pioneer Angus (Borrodale) MacDonald was Mary MacDonald the daughter of Martin MacDonald (Pioneer) of Knoydart.

The names listed on my first post are from the 1871 Census of Canada.

Please let me know what you think about this as I am very interested to hear from you.

Hope to hear from you,

Peter

I'm wondering if my MacEachern links interweave with yours. I have a Lauchlin MacEachern b: 1801, d: 1861, wife Catherine Gillis b: about 1808, d: 1897.

Lauchlin's father was Donald m: Christian (I have a question mark after both Donald and Christian's names - not sure why). His grandfather was Ronald.

Lauchlin and Catherine had, apparently, 12 children that I have listed as: Mary, Donald, Capt. Hugh, Alexander, Catherine, Christy, Ann, Archibald, John, Margaret, John (second John after the death of the first? That happened often), Bessie.

My link is through Ann b: 1846, d: 1911, m: married Ronald MacInnis. Their son Norman was my father's father.

I pieced this together with information from Norman MacInnis of Boston, and the work of Brian MacInnis. Some of it may be tentative. My grandfather Norman McInnis (as spelled his name) came out west to BC, Canada sometime around the turn of the century and his ties to NS were rather thin I presume.

I have recently seen a book that has shown me that my grat-great-grandmother is Martha MacMillan, married to Simon Giffin (son of Henrietta Chadsey and Simon Giffin). I am the great granddaughter of their son Ralph. I can find very little info on Martha besides her death registration. Does anyone have any info?

You mentioned your grandfather Donald/Daniel Chisholm was a qualified tailor. Based on this, I checked for Chisholm families in the 1891 census who were tailors. Only one Chisholm family stood out:

Donald Chisholm, age 66, born in NS, Tailor's Cutter
Anne Chisholm, age 60, born NB
Joseph Chisholm, age 32, born US, Tailor's Cutter
Elizabeth Chisholm, age 30, born NS, Dress Maker
Margaret F Chisholm, age 27, born NS, Dress Maker
Martha Chisholm, age 24, born NS
Matilda Chisholm, age 20, born NS

You'll note that son Joseph was born in the United States, and the rest were born in Nova Scotia. You'll also note that mother Anne was born in New Brunswick.

As per an LDS search, son Joseph Chisholm married Hanna McDonald on 24 Jan 1893. The marriage record indicated that Joseph was from Malignant Cove. His parents were listed as Donald Chisholm and Ann Doherty. Consider the similiarity of the mother's surname to Rorety. Also consider the daughter-in-laws first name Hanna, who you mentioned was an informant on a possible death record.

As per another LDS search, daughter Martha Chisholm died in Boston, 3 Ottawa Street, on 21 Nov 1905. Her parents were listed as Donald Chisholm from Antigonish and Ann Doherty from Bathurst, New Brunswick, a city located at Chaleur Bay.

If you recall in my previous reply, specifically Chisholm family #4, I mentioned a Donald Chisholm, son of Alexander (Red) married to a Bay Chaleur Lady who had a son James (possibly your line). Well, I believe the above mentioned family is that family listed by Rankin.

Hope this helps,

Steve

Thank you Steve.

Some of the information you have provided does help a little to confirm other sources I have come accross.Particularly the the story of a Donald going missing at an early age. My grandfather left home at 17 and no doubt he did not announce his intentions to anyone.

On one of his British Army records (now aged 30) he gives as next of kin a [Father] John Chisholm (Brother and Sister, Mary of Bedford St, Boston. I have often thought his argument might have been church related?

Thank you again for your input.

Don Chisholm

I'm not sure how much of this will help, but according to the marriage record of James William Chisholm and Catherine Chisholm, the parents of James William (Donald Chisholm and Ann Rorety) resided in Greenfield, Antigonish County, also known as Greendale, or the more familiar Rear Malignant Cove.

Both Sagart Arisaig and Rankin informed of two Chisholm brothers from Strathglass, Scotland, who settled at Malignant Cove in the 1790's:

1. John Chisholm had two sons: Malcolm married to Miss MacKinnon; and William married to Kate MacNeil. Malcolm had a son Donald who was married to Ann MacGillivray. No children were listed for William.

2. Donald Chisholm had no sons.

Rankin went on to inform that these brothers had two other brothers who went to Cape Breton, another two brothers who went to New York, and two sisters who remained in Nova Scotia. However, no further details were given of these siblings.
Rankin then went on to inform of two other Chisholm families that were living at Malignant Cove:

3. John Chisholm (no indication as to where he came from, when he emmigrated or who his wife was) had a son Alex Ban married to Ann Fraser. The children of Alex Ban were: William, Duncan, John, Christopher, Colin, Alexander Donald, Donald Allan, and Sarah. No further information was given of these children.

4. Alex Chisholm and his wife Ann MacInnis came from Strathglass, Scotland in the late 18th, early 19th century. They had the following sons: Alexander (Red); John; Kenneth; and Donald. Alexander (Red) had a son Donald married to a Bay Chaleur Lady with a son named James (possibly your line). John had a son Donald who was married to Maggie MacRae but no sons named James. Kenneth had no sons named Donald. Donald had nothing written about him except for he "... went away in his early manhood, and has not been heard from since." Since family stories get muddy over the years, is it possible that this Donald was your great grandfather from Antigonish, the one who left home at an early age and wanted nothing to do with his family?

There are many Chisholm families in Antigonish County, but these are the one's from the Malignant Cove area. As you can see, Donald Chisholm, wife Ann Rorety and son James William were not mentioned, making it very difficult to determine your lineage. However, I only have access to two books about the Malignant Cove area of Antigonish County. There is also "Drummer on Foot" that I don't have, but possibly some of the other readers can offer some help with that source.

Best of Luck,
Steve Farrell

Is anyone able to assist in my search for the family of my grandfather?
My grandfathers full name was Donald [aka Daniel / Danny] William Chisholm born Feb 1878 the son of James William Chisholm and Catherine Chisholm, married July 1875.
Prior to that I believe James William was also married to a Catherine McLelland, daughter of Malcome McLelland & Mary ?. Catherine died at the birth of her [?] daughter Mary Ann Chisholm in 1874.
When searching for information on my great grandfather I found him listed in the 1881 Canada Census [born USA?] together with his wife Catherine and children Mary, John, Donald & Joseph.
Likely marriage records discovered indicate his father as Donald Chisholm and mother Ann Roarety, Catherine's father was William Chisholm and mother Christy Mclean. A possible death record lists the same parents and a Hannah Chisholm as the informant.
My grandfather left home at the age of 17-18yrs never wanting anything more to do with his family for reasons unknown, forbidding even his wife to discuss his family with their children. At one point my aunt tells me that advertisements were placed in local papers seeking him to contact the parties listed, he refused to recognise the add was for him.
There was it seems a dispute that he disliked so much that he broke off all family contact although, his father did write to him in Australia seeking his co-operation in a possible land grant from the Canadian government for ex servicemen who fought in South Africa. His father even approached a William Chisholm MP from the Canadian House of Commons about the land grants. It's possible his father [James William] may have wanted him to join the church and he disagreed?
He was in later life a qualified Tailor and his children were raised as non Catholics. Information that was passed on was that he was born in Antigonish NS, had a brother / uncle who was a priest [?] and via other papers found he managed to obtain a working passage on a small ship 'Siddarth" with UK Merchant Marine out of Bay Verte New Foundland, disembarking in Manchester. He subsequently took another passage to London wherein he joined the army on two seperate occasions until 1902. He later married our grandmother [Olive Grace Miller] and thereafter they both moved to Australia in late 1911. He also joined the Australian Army giving an incorrect DOB and died in service in 1941.
Finding any records for my great granfather James William Chisholm or that of his children has been difficult. My Aunt tells me that he was a sheep farmer and whether or not he was born in the USA I don't know.
Thus I find that whilst I am almost agreed that the records I have found are that of my great grandfather I cannot be certain because of the doors closed by my grandfather all those years ago.

Hi Gary,

At the present time, I don't have an answer for you. I can not find your Donald McDonald listed as a Pioneer, or a descendant of a Pioneer family in Antigonish County. This suggests that if he did emmigrate, he either settled outside of Antigonish County, or he lived with relatives in Antigonish County up until the day he passed away.

I did find the death record of his son Duncan who died in Springfield, Antigonish County on 22-Jan-1868, age 63. The record informed he was born in Scotland (most likely in 1804). Duncan was also married at the time of his death. Turnes out he married his mother's step-daughter Jane Cameron (daughter of Alan Cameron and Jane McIvor). Most likely Duncan inherited land from Alan Cameron (Pioneer), so this is why we don't see Duncan listed as a pioneer either.

There is no mention of McDonald siblings for Duncan. This suggests either he was the youngest in the family and all his older siblings settled elsewhere (or died), or his younger siblings died young, or his father Donald McDonald died soon after 1804.

Duncan McDonald and Jane Cameron had the following children:

1. Catherine, born 26 Dec 1835, Springfield.
2. Mary, born ????
married Lewis McDonald 6 Nov 1866, son of Alex and Mary of the Gulf Shore.
3. Donald, born 2 Jul 1839, Springfield.
married Janet McPherson 25 Jul 1872 daughter of Dougal and Sarah.
4. Alan, born 1846, Springfield.
married Catherine Cameron 12 Feb 1877, daughter of Duncan and Sarah McGillivray.
5. Janet married to David Floyd

You may want to look for a publication written by Margaret Grant on May 31, 1973 entitled "The History of Springfield". I saw an excerpt from this work referring to Janet McDonald (married to David Floyd), and beside her name it was written (Down). I've seen the word "Down" written beside other family names, and I wonder if it has the same meaning as "Donn", which is wahat you wrote beside Duncan's name.

If I come across more information, I will post it on this thread. Best of luck.

Regards,
Steve Farrell
Steve,
You are well schooled in the MacGillivrays lineage. Can you help me id my GGG Grandfather, Donald MacDonald, b 1770 in Arisaig, married Mary "Kinlochmoidart" Gillis b.c. 1780 in Ceann Loch Morar, d/o Donald "Kinlochmoidart" Gillis and Catherine MacGillivray, (sister to the (4) MacGillivray Brothers from Arnipol, Dumnaglas, Bailey's Brook and St Andrews and she was d/o Angus "Mor" MacGillivray). I believe Donald MacD. and his wife lived in Arisaig, had a son Duncan Donn, b 1803 and later migrated to South River Antigonish with the help of Mary's uncle Donald riabach Macgillivray. Donald MacD. passed and Mary Gillis m. Allan Dougald Cameron of South River and had 2 additional children 1823-24. Allan Dougald's brother Ewen 'Hugh' Cameron was married to Mary's sister Margaret Gillis. Can you help me in identifying Donald Macdonald? There are several MacDonalds married into these MacGillivray and Cameron families.

Thanks for sharing this info, this helps me to eliminate some people from my search. My 3rd great grandfather John McGivlray bought land in St Margarets Parish, north shore of Lot 44 in PEI in 1805.

It has been written that all the MacGillivray's in Antigonish County descend from one of two brothers, however that same author went on to reference what appears to be three unique lines.

I do know that Andrew Ban MacGillivray was the son of Donald MacGillivray, son of Hugh Ban MacGillivray. Andrew Ban emmigrated from his home farm in Arnipol, Scotland with his wife and son Donald in 1791. They settled in Dunmaglass, Antigonish County along with Andrew's brothers Capt. Alex, Angus and Hugh. I suspect brother Angus is #2 on your list of MacGillivray's on the Jane.

Another Andrew MacGillivray, son of Duncan, son of Hugh Ban MacGillivray came out from Arisaig, Scotland to PEI first, and then settled at Maryvale in Antigonish county. He is a cousin to the above Andrew Ban. It is suggested this family came out much later than 1791.

There is also a Hugh MacGillivray, son of William, was born and married in Arisaig, Scotland. Emigrated to Pictou in 1790 and settled at Morristown.

There are also the "Bridge" MacGillivray's of South River in Antigonish County who came out from Arisaig, Scotland in 1801. I believe they are somehow related to the "Vamy" MacGillivray's (Hugh, John and William) of Bailey's Brook, Pictou. Not sure when the "Vamy" MacGillivray's came out, but it's worth mentioning that "Vamy" is a corruption of Mama (ie Glen Mama).

Also there are Angus Ban and William MacGillivray, sons of Donald, from Arisaig, Scotland who came out to Sydney, Cape Breton in 1802 and settled at Lakevale. A brother John settled in Canada, and another brother Angus settled at Big Brook, South River.

I don't know if I got all of the MacGillivray families who had settled in and around Antigonish, but I hope the information helps answer your query.

Regards,
Steve Farrell

Hi Steve,

Thanks for sharing this. My maternal ancestry is through the MacGillvvrays, but from PEI. I am pretty certain that my ancestor, John McGilvray who lived in PEI in 1805, was on the Jane, thus left Scotland in 1791.

I'd be very interested to know if there have been more details on the MacGillivray families who settled in Antigonish. For reference, it seems the following MacGillivrays traveled on the Jane & Lucy:

McGilvray families on the Jane
1.	John M'Gillray from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 6 Adults
2.	Angus McGilvray from Arinapoul, Arisay, Scotland (near Glen Mama) - 2 adults, 1 child 6 to 8, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
3.	William McGilvray - Tenant from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 3 adults, 1 child 8 to 12, 1 child 6 to 8, 2 children 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
4.	John MacGilvray Jr. from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 2 adults, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
5.	Hugh M'Gilvray - Tenant from Arieniskill, Scotland (near Prince Charlie's Cave) - 2 adults, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
6.	John MacGilvray - Tenant from Alisary, Loch Ailort, Moidart, Scotland - 6 adults
7.	Keatherine McGilvray from Easan, Scotland (Essan near Mallaig) - 1 adult, 1 child 4 to 6
8.	Hugh McGilvray from Kylesmorar, Scotland (near Loch Nevis) - 1 Adult

Aboard the Ship Lucy
1.	Donald M'Gilvray from Kylesmorar, Scotland (near Loch Nevis) - 2 Adults

Andrew, thank you so much for replying. I would love to ask a few questions of your Dad or any of his siblings, if possible. I had to rebuild my McIsaac line from scratch, as my mother had no real contact with her dad, and her dad's mom, Mary McIsaac, died when my Granddad was 2 or 3. Anyway, I don't want to bore anyone with the story of my McIsaac lineage, but I sure would love to see if Dad or your aunts and uncles might have information about any MacIsaac's that moved to the U.S. early on. Fr. Rankin's History mentions that one of Lauchie Mor's sons, John, was in Pennsylvania with a family - I think that this John is the same person as my g-g-g-grandfather. I just need help to determine if anyone ever heard from him after he moved away from Pleasant Valley/Eigg Mountain. Thanks again for your contact, and I would appreciate any information or contacts you could supply. Kind regards, Andrew B.

Hi Andrew, I am Lauchie's son, strangely enough, my name is Andrew. Dad does have a lot of info on the subject and his siblings have even more. I have been to the old homestead, basically a pile of rocks, but the outline is there. It sits on MacIsaac's lake.
Dad's father was Angus MacIsaac,
his father was George and his father before him was George. They re-located to the Cloverville area after Pleasant Valley, all within the district of Antigonish. I am currently living in Ontario but if you check Nova Scotia Vital statistics online, you will be able to bring up the 1911 census. You will see, George MacIsaac, sons Huntly etc...

Alexander McDougall (MacDougall) of Antigonish

Researching my g-g-grandfather, Alexander McDougall, born about 1861 in Springfield, Antigonish. He was killed in a mining accident in Bridgeville when he was about 37, leaving behind his wife, Flora (McDonald) and 3 children: Catherine (Cassie), Alexander Jr., and Mary.
I believe I have found an entry in the online transcripts from The Casket on his death. A Mr. McDougall, 37, was killed on Aug. 5, 1899 in Bridgeville. He was born in Springfield, N.S., son of Hugh. The notations said he left behind 3 children and there is a story accompanying it.
It all seems to fit that this is my gg-grandfather. I wondered if anybody had access to the story in The Casket relating to this.
His son, Alexander Jr., was my g-grandfather. He married Margaret Lawlor from Guysborough. His daughter, Catherine, married a Mr. Rawlings while his daughter, Mary, married a Mr. Worth.
From census information, I believe that Alexander Sr. was the son of Hugh McDougall and Catherine.
Would anyone know of a listing of Antigonish county residents who perished in the August Gale of 1873?? Specifically, I am looking for the Name Alexander McDonald, son of Alexander McDonald and Isabella (MacGillivray)McDonald of St. Andrews, Antigonish county. It is reported in Drummer-on-Foot that he drowned at sea in the August gale of 1873. No death registration is available on the nova Scotia vital stats website. I have compiled an extensive database on this McDonald line from immigration to present day, however, confirmation of Alex's death escapes me. All leads appreciated.

Sorry I took so long to reply.
This is the information I have which is not much I apologize.

My Grandmothers Birth Name was Eleanor Victory. Her parents names were George and Amy (Dickerson) Victory.
George was listed on the 1880 Aroostook Census.
His father was James Victory and Mother was Mary.
I believe this is the same Family. These were the family names listed. I do not see an Almeda though.

James Victory 57
Mary A. Victory 55
Margaret Victory 26
Sherbon Victory 21
George Victory 15
Edward Victory 11

The only information I have written down is that James was a farmer.
His father was from Ireland.
And his mother was from Nova Scotia.
