In Duncan Rankin's History of Antigonish, on page 222, he has a chapter reference to the MacDonald (Donn) brothers, Alexander and William. They were pioneers to Caledonia Mills, Antigonish (William) and St. Andrews, Antigonish (Alexander). They and some of their decendants carried the Donn moniker for a few generations. No reference is given to where in Scotland they immigrated from or who their parents (lineage) were. Apparently William was born in 1784 and immigrated c 1802 according to death records.
My ggg grandfather was Duncan Donn Macdonald and he along with his widowed mother (Mary Gillis MacDonald) both married into the Allan Dougald Cameron family (Mary to Allan circa 1820, and Duncan to Allan's daughter Jane Cameron circa 1830), all resided in Springfield Antigonish. Duncan and Jane's children carried the Donn moniker in their name
I suspect Duncan's Father; Donald MacDonald (Mary's 1'st husband) was related to William and Alexander Donn MacDonald as perhaps their brother.
I wonder if anyone in the Antigonish, South River, Marydale, Caledonia, Springfield areas might provide some insight to these "Donn MacDonalds"? Donn was usually a reference to hair or eye color, but I do not see it used in multi generation except here.
The Loddy Macdonalds from Antigonish originated from Sunisletter, Arisaig Scotland where Ludovick hailed from. The Loddies were known for their "dark eyes". Could they be related to the Donn Macdonalds?
I came across a reference to 3 Macdonald brothers; Donald, Duncan
and Alexander from Craigh Mohr (adjacent to Sunisletter). I believe these brothers were the sons of John from either the Rhue Farm or Traigh Farm, Arisaig. If anyone can help with additional info or correction, it would be appreciated.
