Clanranald connection to the MacGillivray's of Antigonish County

For those of you whe descend from Andra Ban MacGillivray, or Andrew Ban MacGillivray, pioneer of Dunmaglass in the Arisaig district of Antigonish County, I was asked to find what connection existed between the descendants of this MacGillivray branch and the MacDonald clan. In doing so, I found a descrepancy in the book History of Antigonish, Volume 1, page 55.

Sagart Arisaig (SA) informed that Andra Ban MacGillivray was married to Janet MacDonald of the Kinlochmoidart cadet of Clanranald. He continued on page 55 to inform that "The Macdonalds of Kinlochmoidart were the descendants of John, fourth son of Allan, fourth chief of Clanranald."

According to a book by Rev. Charles McDonald's "Moidart, Among the Clanranalds", which SA later refered to, it is on page 245 of this book that the above mentioned Allan was listed as the IX (nineth) chief of Clanranald, not IV (fourth). This is also confirmed on page 298 of the book "The Clan Donald, Volume 3", written 1896. However on page 457 in the book "History of the MacDonalds, and Lords of the Isles", written in 1881, it informed Allan was the VIII (eighth) chief. Either way, Allan wasn't the fourth.

Here is the Clanranald/Kinlochmoidart family line:

Somhairle, King of Argyll (b. 1100, d. 1164)
|
Ranald of Islay, Kintyre, and Arran (b. 1147, d. 1207)
|
Donald of the Isles (b. 1190, d. 1269)
|
Angus Mor MacDonald of the Isles (b. 1249, d. 1300)
|
Angus Og MacDonald of the Isles (b. 1272, d. 1329)
|
John MacDonald, Lord of the Isles (b. 1324, d. 1387)
|
Ranald 1st MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1389)
|
Allan 2nd MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1430)
|
Roderick 3rd MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1481)
|
Allan 4th MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1505)
|
Alexander 7th MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1529)
|
John 8th MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1584)
|
Allan 9th MacDonald of Clanranald (d. 1593)
|
John 1st MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart (d. 1644)
|
Alexander 2nd MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart (d. 1689)
|
Ranald 3rd MacDonald of Kinlochmoidart (d. 1725)
Married to Margaret Cameron (had 23 children), daughter of John Cameron of Lochiel, son of Sir Ewan Cameron.
|
Ronald MacDonald (a younger son)
Married Marcella MacDonald, daughter of Angus MacDonald of Dalelea, Moidart, Scotland, son of Alexander MacDonald.
|
Janet MacDonald
Married Andra Ban MacGillivray, emmigrated in 1791 to Antigonish County and were pioneers of Dunmaglass in the Arisaig district of Antigonish County.

Hi Steve,

Thanks for sharing this. My maternal ancestry is through the MacGillvvrays, but from PEI. I am pretty certain that my ancestor, John McGilvray who lived in PEI in 1805, was on the Jane, thus left Scotland in 1791.

I'd be very interested to know if there have been more details on the MacGillivray families who settled in Antigonish. For reference, it seems the following MacGillivrays traveled on the Jane & Lucy:

McGilvray families on the Jane
1. John M'Gillray from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 6 Adults
2. Angus McGilvray from Arinapoul, Arisay, Scotland (near Glen Mama) - 2 adults, 1 child 6 to 8, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
3. William McGilvray - Tenant from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 3 adults, 1 child 8 to 12, 1 child 6 to 8, 2 children 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
4. John MacGilvray Jr. from Glen Mama, Arisay, Scotland - 2 adults, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
5. Hugh M'Gilvray - Tenant from Arieniskill, Scotland (near Prince Charlie's Cave) - 2 adults, 1 child 2 to 4, 1 child under 2
6. John MacGilvray - Tenant from Alisary, Loch Ailort, Moidart, Scotland - 6 adults
7. Keatherine McGilvray from Easan, Scotland (Essan near Mallaig) - 1 adult, 1 child 4 to 6
8. Hugh McGilvray from Kylesmorar, Scotland (near Loch Nevis) - 1 Adult

Aboard the Ship Lucy
1. Donald M'Gilvray from Kylesmorar, Scotland (near Loch Nevis) - 2 Adults

It has been written that all the MacGillivray's in Antigonish County descend from one of two brothers, however that same author went on to reference what appears to be three unique lines.

I do know that Andrew Ban MacGillivray was the son of Donald MacGillivray, son of Hugh Ban MacGillivray. Andrew Ban emmigrated from his home farm in Arnipol, Scotland with his wife and son Donald in 1791. They settled in Dunmaglass, Antigonish County along with Andrew's brothers Capt. Alex, Angus and Hugh. I suspect brother Angus is #2 on your list of MacGillivray's on the Jane.

Another Andrew MacGillivray, son of Duncan, son of Hugh Ban MacGillivray came out from Arisaig, Scotland to PEI first, and then settled at Maryvale in Antigonish county. He is a cousin to the above Andrew Ban. It is suggested this family came out much later than 1791.

There is also a Hugh MacGillivray, son of William, was born and married in Arisaig, Scotland. Emigrated to Pictou in 1790 and settled at Morristown.

There are also the "Bridge" MacGillivray's of South River in Antigonish County who came out from Arisaig, Scotland in 1801. I believe they are somehow related to the "Vamy" MacGillivray's (Hugh, John and William) of Bailey's Brook, Pictou. Not sure when the "Vamy" MacGillivray's came out, but it's worth mentioning that "Vamy" is a corruption of Mama (ie Glen Mama).

Also there are Angus Ban and William MacGillivray, sons of Donald, from Arisaig, Scotland who came out to Sydney, Cape Breton in 1802 and settled at Lakevale. A brother John settled in Canada, and another brother Angus settled at Big Brook, South River.

I don't know if I got all of the MacGillivray families who had settled in and around Antigonish, but I hope the information helps answer your query.

Steve Farrell

Thanks for sharing this info, this helps me to eliminate some people from my search. My 3rd great grandfather John McGivlray bought land in St Margarets Parish, north shore of Lot 44 in PEI in 1805. The other earlier information I have collected is:

Steve,
You are well schooled in the MacGillivrays lineage. Can you help me id my GGG Grandfather, Donald MacDonald, b 1770 in Arisaig, married Mary "Kinlochmoidart" Gillis b.c. 1780 in Ceann Loch Morar, d/o Donald "Kinlochmoidart" Gillis and Catherine MacGillivray, (sister to the (4) MacGillivray Brothers from Arnipol, Dumnaglas, Bailey's Brook and St Andrews and she was d/o Angus "Mor" MacGillivray). I believe Donald MacD. and his wife lived in Arisaig, had a son Duncan Donn, b 1803 and later migrated to South River Antigonish with the help of Mary's uncle Donald riabach Macgillivray. Donald MacD. passed and Mary Gillis m. Allan Dougald Cameron of South River and had 2 additional children 1823-24. Allan Dougald's brother Ewen 'Hugh' Cameron was married to Mary's sister Margaret Gillis. Can you help me in identifying Donald Macdonald? There are several MacDonalds married into these MacGillivray and Cameron families.

Hi Gary,

At the present time, I don't have an answer for you. I can not find your Donald McDonald listed as a Pioneer, or a descendant of a Pioneer family in Antigonish County. This suggests that if he did emmigrate, he either settled outside of Antigonish County, or he lived with relatives in Antigonish County up until the day he passed away.

I did find the death record of his son Duncan who died in Springfield, Antigonish County on 22-Jan-1868, age 63. The record informed he was born in Scotland (most likely in 1804). Duncan was also married at the time of his death. Turnes out he married his mother's step-daughter Jane Cameron (daughter of Alan Cameron and Jane McIvor). Most likely Duncan inherited land from Alan Cameron (Pioneer), so this is why we don't see Duncan listed as a pioneer either.

There is no mention of McDonald siblings for Duncan. This suggests either he was the youngest in the family and all his older siblings settled elsewhere (or died), or his younger siblings died young, or his father Donald McDonald died soon after 1804.

Duncan McDonald and Jane Cameron had the following children:

1. Catherine, born 26 Dec 1835, Springfield.
2. Mary, born ????
married Lewis McDonald 6 Nov 1866, son of Alex and Mary of the Gulf Shore.
3. Donald, born 2 Jul 1839, Springfield.
married Janet McPherson 25 Jul 1872 daughter of Dougal and Sarah.
4. Alan, born 1846, Springfield.
married Catherine Cameron 12 Feb 1877, daughter of Duncan and Sarah McGillivray.
5. Janet married to David Floyd

You may want to look for a publication written by Margaret Grant on May 31, 1973 entitled "The History of Springfield". I saw an excerpt from this work referring to Janet McDonald (married to David Floyd), and beside her name it was written (Down). I've seen the word "Down" written beside other family names, and I wonder if it has the same meaning as "Donn", which is wahat you wrote beside Duncan's name.

If I come across more information, I will post it on this thread. Best of luck.

Regards,
Steve Farrell

Hi Steve et al,

I am wondering if you know anything about one Mary MacGillivray who (according to information I have) was born in (or about) 1794 in Broad Cove, Cape Breton Island. She was a near relative of Father Ronald MacGillivray of Broad Cove. She was married to Donald MacEachen MacDonald from Airinsdale, Airisaig and is considered to be one of the pioneer settlers of Port Hood. I do not know when Donald arrived, but it must have been prior to 1800---possible in the 1790's or even earlier. I am not clear on the association of Mabou County to Inverness County here. I know that member of later generations of the family moved to Inverness County, but I have my doubts as to whether Mary MacGillivray was actually born in Broad Cove.

Donald and Mary (MacGillivray) had a daughter Catherine MacDonald who married Angus Smith, a pioneer settler of SW Margaree. Their son Hugh Smith married Mary MacNeil and had a daughter named Flora Smith who married Rory MacDonald, son of James MacDonald of Moidart. Finally, their son John R. MacDonald of Inverness married Maria Christina MacLeod. John and Maria were (are) my maternal great-grandparents (my mother's mother's parents).

Hence, Donald MacEachen and Mary MacGillivray were (are) my 5 x great-grandparents.

If you have any information on the family of this Mary MacGillivray who was related in some way to a Father Ronald MacGillivray of Broad Cove, or could point me in a direction wherein I might discover something about her family I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks and best regards, A. Bruce McDonald

Hi Bruce,

In the book "History of Inverness County Nova Scotia" by J. L. MacDougall, page 281, it informs that your Mary MacGillivray was a "... paternal aunt to the late Father Ronald MacGilllivray of Broad Cove, ..."

In the book "History of Antigonish, Volume 2" edited by Raymond A. MacLean, page 37, it informs that Father Ronald MacGillivray (Dhu), "Pastor of Broad Cove Chapel, Oct. 1866 until death;", was the "... son of John MacGillivray (son of Hugh, son of Duncan, of Arisaig, Scotland) and Margaret MacDonald; born at Malignant Brook (Maryvale) July, 1816; ... died at Broad Cove Chapel Aug. 8, 1876;"
