Here's a combination of data from Wayne Walker's files, and some of my own research. Not sure if this will clarify or obscure, but I believe it provides the 1857 (not 1858) marriage date for Samuel and the woman I would dub, Margaret Jane Burns, as well as some of their descendants. I am afraid the link across the Atlantic data is not within my grasp, but here is data that may help flesh out some of the family connections.

JESTINGS

1. George JESTING He lived in Clements with his wife Elizabeth.
Married 1st day Feb 1827, by banns, by Rev. Sampson BUSBY, Methodist, George JESTINGS, AND, Elizabeth BUSKIRK, both of Annapolis. (Bridgetown Methodist and Presbyterian United Circuit Marriage Register, 1815-1967, NS Film 11252)

Children:

2 i. William JESTINGS; b.c. 1830;

ii. James Edward JESTING; b. 28 Aug 1844; bpt. 11 Jul 1854 in Annapolis; sources: (1) St. George and St. Andrew's Parish Register Annapolis;

2. William JESTINGS (George) "Married 29 Dec 1853 by Rev. J. RING, William JESTINGS, AND, Miss Jane STEALS. (The Christian Messenger, 12 Jan 1854) Bond and cover dated 20 Dec 1853, by Rev. Jarvis RING, Baptist, of Bridgetown, between William W. JESTINGS, bachelor, farmer of Annapolis, AND, Miss Jane STEALS, spinster of Annapolis. Cosigner: Robert PETTIT, farmer of Annapolis." (Annapolis County Marriage Bonds and Licences 1853, no. 393)

"married 29 Nov 1880 at Annapolis, by license, Baptist, William JESTINGS, aged 50, widower, farmer, of Round Hill, born in Bentville, son of George and Elizabeth JESTINGS, farmer, AND Peninah TINKHAM, aged 33, spinster, of and born in Yarmouth, daughter of Jacob and Margaret TINKHAM, farmer" (Annapolis County Marriage Register, page 123, no.88).

Unsure of following:

Married 12 Nov 1857 (could THIS be 1858 marriage, and Jane be a Margaret Jane?), at Bridgetown, Samuel JESTINGS, farmer at Tupperville, AND, Jane BURNS. Child: James, born 21 May 1870 at Tupperville. (Registrar Quarterly Returns, Round Hill Births, 2nd Q, 1870) Indeed, based on LDS website, it shows 12-Nov-1857 as marriage date at Round Hill for Samuel and MARGARET. ("Canada, Marriages, 1661-1949") Children, then, aside from James, would very likely include:
Agnes Edith Jestings, b. 08-May-1865, married a Mr. Weaver, and she died 31-Jan-1944 in Los Angeles, CA, USA
A Menetta Jestings, b. 20-Aug-1866, Round Hill, d/o of Samuel and Margaret. Son, James, b. 1870, listed as son of Samuel and Jane, is the James S., aged 10 months in the 1871 census for Carleton Corner, Annapolis Co, NS. Here is the family in 1871:

Samuel Jestings 36
Margaret Jestings 40
Carles M Jestings 12 (Charles)
Ellea Jestings 10
Burnard Jestings 8 (Barnard)
Margaret Jestings 6
Menetta Jestings 4
James S Jestings 10 months

10 years later (1881 census) in Annapolis Royal:

Samuel Jesting 46
Margaret Jesting 49
Charles Jesting 22
Barnard Jesting 19
Margaret Jesting 16
Nettie Jesting 14 (Menetta)
James Jesting 10 (ends up marrying a Margaret Stewart, b. Jul-1866, Ireland) @1895. James had moved to US @18888, and in 1900, is found in Newport, RI, USA, daughter of McCartney Stewart, b. Dec-1831. James and Margaret had Charles A?. Jestings, and Annie. Charles b. 07-Nov-1896, Newport, RI, d. 16-Jan-1989, Newport, RI, his son, Charles Stewart Jestings, b. 05-May-1927, d. 18-Feb-2006, Middleton, RI, USA his grandson, Charles Stewart Jestings, Jr., b. @1963)
Lizzie Jesting 6

Married 10 Oct 1853? at Round Hill, William JESTINGS, farmer at Round Hill, AND, Jane BURNS. Child: Frederick B., born 6 Feb 1873 at Round Hill. (Registrar Quarterly Returns, Round Hill Births, 4th Q, 1873) - Worried about the Jane BURNS connection.

Surely this is the same William shown in 1881 Canada Census at Annapolis Royal, Ann. Co, NS, as follows:

William Jestings 51
Boninck Jestings 33
Edward Jestings 24
John Jestings 20
Isabella Jestings 17
...Na Jestings 14
Ester Jestings 11
Frederick Jestings 8 (here is, I believe, the Frederick B. (Burns?) Jestings, b. 06-Feb-1873)

There are surely many ties to East Machias, Washington County, ME, USA.

In fact, Samuel G. Jestings, widower, b. Apr-1836, Canada/Eng, is found there in 1900 census, living with James Q. Burns, b. @1837, NS, and wife Susan, b. @1839, NS, with some of their family. Then back in Annapolis Co, NS for 1901, living with William and Margaret Wood (unsure if/how related).

UNSURE how related, but likely NOT another son of George and Elizabeth, since they were married in 1827:

Joseph JESTINGS He was a shoemaker living in Clements with his wife Elizabeth LeCAIN.

Married 9 Feb 1843. Joseph JESTINGS of the Parish of St. Luke's, Annapolis and Elizabeth LeCAIN of the Parish of Clements were married 9 Feb 1843 at her father's house by license (St. Clements Anglican, Marriage Register, page 7, no. 19) Bond 9 Feb 1843, Joseph JESTINGS, AND, Elizabeth LeCAIN. cosigner: Thomas LeCAIN. Rev. GODFREY signed bond. (Nova Scotia Marriage Bonds 1843)

"Joseph JESTINGS of St. Clements, aged 34 years, was buried 17 Jul 1854" (St. Clements PR3, p.15, no.113).

"married 25 Feb 1880 at Lake LaRose, by license, Church of England, William J. TEWDALE, aged 49, widower, farmer, of Lake LaRose, born in England, son of John and Isabella TEWDALE, miller, AND Susan JESTINGS, aged 37, spinster, of Lake LaRose, born in Clementsport, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth JESTINGS, shoemaker" (Annapolis County Marriage Register, page 118, no.16).

Children:

i. Susan Elizabeth JESTINGS; b. 14 Aug 1843; "Susan Elizabeth, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth JESTINGS, shoemaker, of Clements, b. 14 Aug 1843, bpt. 9 Mar 1850" (St.G&St.A PR1, p.28/29); (originally thought this must be the Susan L. Jestings BURNS, who married James A. Burns and appears also in East Machias, ME., but in 1900 US Census that Susan L. shows DOB as Jan-1839. - needs more work, most likelyk)

ii. Martha Maria JESTINGS; b. 27 May 1845; "Martha Maria, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth JESTINGS, shoemaker, of Clements, b. 27 May 1845, bpt. 9 Mar 1850" (St.G&St.A PR1, p.28/29); "Martha JESTINGS of Clements, in her 17th year, was buried 10 Jul 1861" (St. Clements PR3, p.25, no.193);

iii. George A. JESTINGS; b. 20 Mar 1847; "George A., son of Joseph and Elizabeth JESTINGS, shoemaker, of Clements, b. 20 Mar 1847, bpt. 9 Mar 1850" (St.G&St.A PR1, p.28/29); "George JESTINGS of Clements, in his 14th year, was buried 6 Jul 1861" (St. Clements PR3, p.24, no.192);

iv. Sarah L. JESTINGS; b. 15 Apr 1849; "Married 3 Oct 1867 at Clements, by licence, by Rev. G.D. COX, Baptist; James
HUBLEY, aged 22, bachelor, farmer, of Milford, born in La Have, son of Jacob HUBLEY, farmer, AND, Sarah JESTINGS, aged 17, spinster, of Milford, born in Clements, daughter of Joseph JESTINGS, farmer. (Annapolis County Marriage Register 1867-68, page 20, no. 11) (Annapolis Co., Annapolis Marriages and Licences, sheet 63, 1867) Married at Baptist Parsonage, Clements. Bond dated 3 Oct 1867, cosigner: George HARNISH of Milford. (Annapolis County Marriage Bonds and Licences 1868, no. 11) (Registrar Quarterly Returns, Annapolis County, Annapolis Licenses, 1867, sheet 62; Marriages, 1867, sheet 63) He was a
labourer at Milford. Child: Sharlot Ann, born 2 Sep 1868 at Milford. (Registrar Quarterly Returns, Milford Births, 1st Q, 1869) Married 3 Oct 1867 at Clements by Rev. G.D.
I am also trying to sort out my line to Austin Smith and Mehitable. I am tracing up through Jonathan Smith and his daughter Famicha. Is any one else in this line? Famicha was probably adopted. She married Daniel Robinson.

Jim Robinson Wengler

Hi there - you are correct in identifying William S Nicholl's parents as William Nicholl and Susan Maria Chesley. They are third great Grandparents of mine through their son James D. I have a portrait drawing of this William, or it may be of his father, whose name I don't know.
Anyway, what i have is in the attached image (Please ignore the naming of his parents as Thomas and Elizabeth - these were just among many names I used to coax something out of the ancestry search engines - with no luck at all.)
Cheers,
David

Several of Fanny and Susan's generations travelled back and forth between Liverpool and New York and at least one settled in New York.
Austin junior was a Master Mariner and Susan was born in New York but was brought up in Liverpool.
I do find it all very interesting.
Do you have an electronic copy of the letter of administration that you would be willing to share with me please? My documentation only goes as far as Austin junior at the moment but I am willing to share if you are interested in him.
All the best
Irene

Since I posted this a few years ago, I learned that there are two Austin Smith families commonly confused and intermingled in records. The Austin Smith who married Mehitable was NOT also married to Sarah Knapp. Austin did die in Wilmot, and although there is no death certificate to be found, there is a Letter of Administration filed by his son James, held in Annapolis, filed to settle Austin's estate, for which there was no will.

Mary Guler
mlmguler@yahoo.con

I am Austin and Mehitable's 4th Great-Granddaughter.
I have been mystified by not being able to go further back than my 2nd Great-Grandfather for years because I had always assumed he came from Ireland (I'm in England). I'd be very willing to swap information if you get in touch.

Regards
Irene
My Great-great Grand father was William Oliver Goldsmith (1833-1865)born in Crapaud PEI but died in Amhurst N/S. GG Grandmother was Sarah Collett who remarried Benjamin Doyle after William died. They had four children: James Anthony Goldsmith, Charles Goldsmith, George W Goldsmith and Sarah Goldsmith. I'm wondering if you would know who William Oliver Goldsmith's mother was? The death record shows her as Frances Pulliver(?) but I'm having trouble learning about her. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you for responding. Your William Brown is a little older than mine. My 2nd grt grandfather would have been born about 1826. But, like yours, his wife was Mary (Wilkins). There were numerous William, Mary & John Browns in the Wilmot area & I am guessing they were all related. My William Brown had only one daughter with is second wife (Seraph Marshall) and that daughter was Mary (Brown) Stephens - she married Sydney Stephens. Some of my William's offspring moved to Massachusetts. Do you know the name of your William's father? I strongly suspect your William and mine were cousins because Wilmot is not a very large area. Who was your G-Grandmother's mother? In your Bible is there any mention of the Slocomb family or a John Brown? Thanks,
Barb

Don't know how much help this will be: My paternal G-Grandmother was Anna Mariah Brown; b: 6 Jul 1844 in Wilmot, NS. Her father was William Brown/Browne, ca, 1812 - 1887. Mother was Mary (?). Anna married William Wallace Phillips of Turner, ME. At some point, the entire extended family - Browns and Phillips - moved to Lynn, MA, and settled there. Many of them are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn. I have pages from the Phillips Family bible, with names, dates, etc. If I can be of further assistance, please email me.

Thank you Jared. I have found a book about the Slocomb family which mentions a specific date for the marriage of Elizabeth Slocomb & John Brown but I am looking for the the record this information was taken from. It is rather frustrating. I am guessing that the original records might have been lost in one of the many fires in Annapolis, NS. Here is a link to page 532 of that book:
http://archive.org/stream/shorthistoryofsl00slocrich#page/53...
Their son, William Wallace Brown, we suspect is our 2nd great grandfather but we cannot find his birth record either. Thanks agin,
Barb
I'm afraid over the years, the only source for this particular family group has been the W. A. Calnek history of Annapolis, which reads:

Caleb SLOCOMB, b. 1768, md. 1792 Mary BASS, daughter of Alden BASS; ch.: (1)
Caleb, b. 1793, md. Mary HAMILTON; (2) Thomas Outhit, b. 1794, md. Mary BERTEAUX;
(3) Mary, b. 1796, md. Adam Easton HAWKSWORTH; (4) Elizabeth, b. 1797, md. John
BROWN; (5) Timothy Rice, b. 1799, md. Hannah WEST; (6) John, b. 1800, d. unmd.; (7) Susan,
b. 1802, d. 1802; (8) Susanna, b. 1803, md. William MILLER, J.P.; (9) Naomi, b. 1806, md.
James CROWLEY; (10) Ruth, b. 1810, md. William GOULD; (11) Julia, b. 1810, md. Isaac
NOBLE; (12) Esther, b. 1812, d. unmd.; (13) Sarah, d. unmd.

I have even looked in Wayne Walker's files and no marriage record for Elizabeth and John. In fact, in my database, I don't even show "Abt. 1819"

Jared
Sorry for taking so long to reply but I just noticed your message. I don't have anything definite showing that the John Pearl listed in this message was married to an Alice Phillips. There is a land transaction signed by John and Alice Pearl abt. 1803 in Kings County. John Pearl's
death record states he was married to Susan Chappell but I believe this is wrong. When John died in 1844 his wife's name was Alice.
John is my ggggrandfather. Thank you for your interest. Another Pearl researcher had told me years ago she had received an e-mail from some
one stating that Alice Phillips had married a Pearl from Annapolis
County. We are trying to find the source.
Thanks again
Dawn

Re: Major Phillips

Seen this refernencing a Major Phillips in Annapolis Royal. Perhaps a connection.

The first Masonic Lodge in Canada was established by Major Erasmus James Phillips in 1738 in Annapolis Royal. It is speculated that the first meeting of the lodge was held in this building. The building has been used as a public house and hotel from as early as 1747, when Rebecca Whitechurch, wife of Matross James Whitechurch was licensed by the Council "to retail strong Drink." In 1791-2, Sinclair's "large room below stairs" was rented for purposes of holding the Supreme and Inferior courts. In the late 1700s and early 1800s the Inn was often used for court ordered property auctions. The building is a National Historic Site, and is also designated as a Provincial and Municipal Heritage Property.

Also an excerpt taken from this webpage shows the above Erasmus James Phillips, as well as an Alice Phillips

"II. Ann Dyson, married Lieut.-Colonel Erasmus James Phillips,7 49th Regiment, of the distinguished military and civil service, Member of Council, Judge Advocate General, Member of the Provincial Parliament. He was nephew of Colonel Richard Philipps, Governor for a long time (see "History of Annapolis"). They had a daughter, Ann, who married Captain William 8 Fenwick, of the Royal Artillery, to whom in turn was born, at Halifax, a son, William, afterwards Captain and Colonel William Fenwick, of the Royal Engineers, who was baptized in St. Paul’s Church, Halifax, 4th February 1767, before mentioned as the uncle of General Williams, which he became (prospectively) by marriage at Annapolis Royal, 20th December 1794, with Maria, daughter of Lieutenant Thomas Walker. In the draft letter from her to the Duke of Kent, cited above, she says that her husband was then, 1796, enjoying a share of the annuity to which reference has been made above, which

7 1st July 1778, Administration on the estate of Alice Dyson, widow, was granted to Joseph Winniett and Alice Phillips, next of kin."

If I can be of any help, just let me know

I would like to know if anyone has any information on a Major Phillips who is listed as receiving a land grant in Annapolis Royal or in that area. He may of had a daughter Alice born abt. 1776 who married a John Pearl. They would have been Catholic. Apparently there is a baptism record for her but I haven't been able to find it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you-Dawn

Malcolm Foster, worked on the manuscript that his father had written of his life in the Annapolis Valley. He died while still working on the manuscript. It was later published as Annapolis Valley Saga. A very interesting book. In the book, the names have been changed, but it also mentions a daughter.

My maternal family tree has the names of Elijah Beals and Hannah Banks on it. I am a grandson of William Lockhart and Amanda Jane (Beals) Patterson. My mother was Lottie Irene (Patterson)(1899-1994). She had two brothers Frank (died at about 18 or 19) and Albert (died during WWI in France). She had older sister,Abbie and younger sister Doris (Mrs. Vernon W. Clarke)who resided in Welsford and Berwick. Another sister died in her youth. The Beals originally came from Hingham, England and settled in what is now Hingham. Mass. The Pattersons emigrated from Armagh, Ireland to Nova Scotia in the 1740s. Some person(s) in the Annapolis Valley created the Beals family tree, of which I have a copy.
Donald Roy MacLeod nova.don@ns.sympatico.ca

George WEATHERS b. abt 1832 married twice
and a son Thomas WEATHERS b. abt 1832 m. Sarah LOGAN
perhaps is the George who married mary CATON b. abt 1813
and for them I have children William b.a bt 1843, Elizabeth b. 1843,
Rebecca b. abt 847, Amanda b. abt 1851, Lottie b. abt 1854, Lydia
Adelia b. abt 1856.
William b. 14 Dec 1789 perhaps is the William who m. 1807 Letitia INGLIS
Elizabeth b. 1 May 1791, d. 14 Oct 1791
Samuel b. abt 1796, m. Ruth CLARK and lived in Saint John
Andrew b. abt 1800, m1 Phoebe BLENUS, m2 Lydia EllS
James b. abt 1804, possibly the James who married Jane LONGMIRE

That's the earliest stuff i've put together, and don't know how accurate it is.
