Hi: I am researching Paul GALE, b abt 1876 and Min O'QUINN b about 1886. They were married at St. Anne's Codroy Valley, Newfoundland on Jan 20, 1904. They had one son that I know of: Thomas Bernard GALE Mar 24, 1909-Dec 3 1968 who married Elizabeth SMITH b June 5, 1905 of Codroy Valley. They lived in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Eliza SMITH's parents were Septimius SMITH b Oct 1863 in Petite and Harriett GALE b Feb 1873 in Millville.

I would be most grateful for any information on these people.

Helen Wyse
Ottawa, Canada

Hi there,

I am pretty sure that Walter Pike is actually the brother of Charlie. Charlie Pike is my Great-grandfather. His sons were Edmund (my grandfather), Albert and Roy. They also had two daughters, Alfreda and Helen.

You might have better luck with that search. I don't think I have a picture of him, but I will look in my stuff.

Best Regards,
Catherine

Hi at this time I do not have any but are in search of some. I am interested in obtaining any photos of either Pikes that were light house keepers there. I am in the current process of talking to seomone who might can help but I currently do not have anything. I certainly wish I could help becasue I would love to exchange info. The only photos I have are of Charles Edward Pike and his Wife Anastasia Caines pike. The lived there on the island for some time and had children there. Im not sure if this helps but would offer it if it does. Do you have any type of heritage type material that might help me in my research such as old photos of the lighthouse in the early 1900's? Best Regards, Wayne

Hi Hank,
Unfortunately, the only information I have was provided in my earlier response. I believe Mr. Squires came to the Grand Lake area from St. John's and was involved with the Newfoundland Railway or Telegraph Company. Bertha Oliver was a domestic in the Bay of Islands area. They would likely have met when Squires came there for supplies or work related reasons.

I have a vague memory of someone referencing that Bertha lost her parents in a fire somewhere around Rigolet, but that may have just been based on hearsay. The surname Oliver would indicate that she was likely of European descent as well as Inuit. You could research the HBC records (reposed in Manitoba) for the original Oliver who was likely a Scotsman who came out with the HBC. I believe a man named Oliver also assisted Mina Hubbard on her Labrador journey. There may be some glimpses in Them Days, a publication in HV-GB. Your best bet is to get in contact with someone form the family. There must have been an historian there somewhere. Try the Elms in St. Anthony or the Banfields in Stephenville.

If you find something out, please share on here.
John
Hello Garry,

My Dad was born in Bartlett's Harbour. His father's name was Michael...I am not sure about my grand-father's relatives as my grand-parents had died when I was just a young girl. Michael (my grand-father) wife's name was Julia Francis Rumbolt. They had six children....3 girls & 3 boy's. They grow up in and around Port Saunders, Bartlett's Harbour. I know that my grand-fathers name was also Michael Walsh. We had relatives that lived in Corner Brook by the names of Caines & Rumbolt's. I believe that Michael Walsh senior was from Killkenny, Ireland. This would have been my great-great grand-father. I hope this little piece of information helps in your endeavor to find your family roots. PS: some of the people mentioned on birth information I have on my family include....Rumbolt's, Caines, Lavers......

My grandfather, William Walsh was born in Port Saunders around 1880. I know he had a brother Michael and a brother Isac. He also had 2 or 3 sisters. I don't know their names.

William Walsh married Elizabeth Mahoney from Conception Harbour. That's where he stayed and raised three children. While living there, he also went to Boston for ten years.

I'd like to find out more about his Port Saunder's family.

Garry

Hi Andrea - Its nice to speak to you. Im Maureen, Edith House daughter. My grandmother was Alfreda Pike, Edmunds sister who just recently passed away. We are piecing together family data to put together a family history book which we have started. When we were there in Port Saunders we spoke to Linda, Marie and Aunt Helen including a few others. They were able to fill in a lot of blanks but it appears that most of the photos of the Pikes are not around or atleast they havent been able to locate them. We do have one of Charles holding a baby, I think named Louellen, but thats it. I think there was one of Annastasia and a couple others. I hope you can locate the photo of the lighthouse and I would love to exchange some other photos with you as well. Can you also tell me the location of where the store was located?

Hi There,

The Pike that married Anastatia Caines was Charles Edmund Pike. They lived together on Keppel Island where one of their sons was born (1909), named Edmund Pike. Edmund Pike was my grandfather. Charles Edmund Pike was my great-grandfather.

Charles and Anastatia moved off Keppel Island and opened Pike General Store in Port Saunders, NFLD. That store is still in existence, but no longer owned by the family.

I believe we have a photo of the lighthouse somewhere that may or may not have family members in the photo.

Hope this is helpful.

Andrea Pike

Hello,
My mom is Mary MacDonld from Heatherton, I think your grandmother was her aunt, Aunt Bess. My grandfathers sister. So i guess we are some sort of cousins.
I recall hearing of many of those you speak of, and meeting a few in Manchester New Hampshire as a kid. I'll have to check with my mom as i don't know much myself. My mom's brothers and sister have all passed away but i do have a cousin up there (somewhere) I've never met him myself. But you surely have connections in Heatherton seems like the whole area is related somehow.
My Mom's Brothers were Andrew and Con (Cornelius), her sister was Bernice, Father Neal MacDonald, Mom was Margret, MacPherson was her maiden name. There were 11 or 12 children in the MacDonald family, my grandfathers and your granmothers
You can contact me at bobd@bak.rr.com

This is the record I have, from Vital Statistics in Newfoundland, regarding Modeste (Bernard) Halbot:

May 2 1906, in St. George's of Old Age, Modeste Halbot, female, age 73, Roman Catholid, born in Cape Breton, and buried in Sandy Point.

In your search, please note the death record of Appoline Bernard I mentioned as "Appoline" is equal to "Pauline" in many records, similar to "Marie/Mary, Jean/John". That record may be the death record of Modeste's mother, Pauline Bernard.

Proof is always best as MyHeritage has several if not thousands of errors: my personal experience had my great-grandfather with three wives, and while one was his wife, the other were news to us because two of them apparently married him at the same time as his wife was living and having children with him! In fact, he had only one wife and one of the other listed was married to his brother, and the third died 10 years before their apparent marriage date.

Best of luck in your search. There are Acadian families named Bernard as well as some First Nations families.

I would very much like to know where you found the birth/death info re Modeste (Bernard) Halbot
thanks for the other leads.. but right at this time time I am concentrating on Pauline and Modeste.. I have Modeste marriage cert ++ Francois Halbot in 1851 but it only names her mother,, Pauline<< and says father .."not listed"
what i really would like to find PROOF of is Paulines parents thanks
