My husband is a descendent from the Halfyard's. Been working on family tree and have collected info back to Richard & Elizabeth (nee Churchill) Halfyard. From our understanding this is Richard IV. What I am looking for is how and why the Halfyards settled in Ochre Pit Cove - the story behind their emigrating from England. Can you help????

My husband is also a descendant of Elizabeth Churchill and Richard Halfyard. One of your wonderful cousins did an amazing job on the family back to Devon England. The first Richard Halfyard he traced married Thomasin (or Thamasin or Tamasin) Puddicombe (daughter of Stephen Puddicombe a thatcher who Richard apprenticed with)and their descendant Richard IV settled in Ochre Pit Cove. We don't know why he came to Canada but Elizabeth and Richard Halfyard were married in Newfoundland. Still a mystery to me is who Elizbeth's parents were... Popular theory says it is Samuel Churchill who had 3 children (Not sure of the wife). His oldest daughter Clarimond married Capt. Boland and had children. The son Nicholas married Elizabeth Wyse of Devon England and had two children Nicholas and Elizabeth. He went back and forth from Canada to Devon and was with the Newman Port Company and he also had fisheries and land in Newfoundland. Nicholas drowned on one of the trips to/from Devon. His son Nicholas married but died young without children. His daughter Elizabeth never married. Both children grew up and remained in England. Elizabeth and RIchard's descendants are all over now... My husband's g grandmother was Delphine Adella Parsons who married Thomas Wheeler in the US and she remained there until her death.

How wonderful to hear from you. My husband's gg grandfather was John Parsons who drowned off Labrador while fishing with others from Ochre Pit Cove. His daughter Delphine was his second child. His oldest was John Pascoe Parsons ane his wife Patience Bishop Parsons was expecting their daughter Bess at the time. She later married a Mr. Rose and moved to Nova Scotia. I do have Bob Halfyard's wonderful book of the Halfyard family. I am not able to see your email address but you can reach me at whatmeworry49@hotmail.com. The mystery I have been trying to crack is who Elizabeth, Clarimond and Nicholas Churchill's parents were. Did that ever get clarified. We have heard that Samuel Churchill was and he evidently drowned (or the story goes) in a large hurricane and then his son Nicholas inherited his fisheries in St. John's Newfoundland. I attached a picture of Patience Bishop Parsons Rose, her son John Pascoe Parsons and daughter Gertrude Rose. Hope you can see the attachments...if not I will send when I get you email address.

The Graves in Ochre Pit cove are my ancestors. Elizabeth Churchill married Richard Halfyard IV of Bovey Tracey England came and settled in Ochre Pit Cove.
I am one of the remaining ancestors of this union. There is a book called the Halfyard Heritage written by Robert Halfyard that might give you all the information you require. Unfortuntely my sister Shirley passed away in 2006 and I do not have any of her research.

James Halfyard.
