Hi Jim,

Much of your post is correct, but some need correction or you'll be on the wrong path.

Sourced genealogies from our geanealogy search group members contain the following information. Please contact me for more information. There is lots of it, but you may have information that can add or clarify some that is missing.

Hugh BAGG/Jane ? are one set of my 5xgreat grandparents.

Hugh BAGG b. abt 1759 in Burin or St. Lawrence m. Jane ? b. abt 1763; 4 sons and 4 daughters, all born in Lamaline, NL. Hugh took his family to found or co-found Cape LaHune, NL.
A MATTHEWS family is known to have lived in Cape LaHune at the same time period, so it is very likely they knew each other and could be the same MATTHEWS family where *John MATTHEWS m. Sarah BAGG.

No source material has shown Jane's last name yet, but she is not the Jane who married Ralph BRAKE. Several recent searchers have contacted me recently on the Jane Matthews m. Ralph BRAKE line.

Joseph Small's writings about the families of Burgeo is dated 1925, a considerable length of time after these events took place. Missing information in the material I have seen to date, could indicate that he had left Burgeo many years before OR that parts of his writings are not transcribed and online OR that I just haven't found them yet.

One BAGG daughter, Sarah, b.abt 1785, d. 16 Mar 1860, m. *John "Old Man" MATTHEWS, b. abt 1770, d. abt 1850. We are missing marriage date, birthplace for *John "Old Man" MATTHEWS.

It is the *John MATTHEWS/Sarah BAGG's first child, **John MATTHEWS b. 1803, who was nicknamed "Uncle John" MATTHEWS" to distinguish them. I use asterisks to indicate generation where I can't use superscript numbering. This line of MATTHEWS seems to have a John Matthews in each generation untile the most recent ones.

From here I am only following my direct lineage. More exists in our search group's information.

*John MATTHEWS/Sarah Jane BAGG had 12 children.
Child 2: Ann (nee BAGG) MATTHEWS m. William GUY before 1803.
Their first child, Sarah Jane GUY b.1803, m. *John DAVIDGE b. unknown, likely in England, on 15 Sep 1848.

Sarah Jane (nee BAGG) MATTHEWS/*John DAVIDGE had 7 children before he and his eldest son, George (18) drowned in Apr 1867 trying to save shipwreck victims between Wreck Island and Connoire Bay.

I am a great-granddaughter of their second child, William J DAVIDGE m. Caroline CAINES, who had 9 children.

Please contact me for additional information and info about our search group. sharon1333@sympatico.ca
I have a decendancy book for John/Sarah Jane Davidge and access to many other genealogies from search group members. I will need some basic generational info/dates from you to see if your family has sourced genealogy information in them that you can use.

I was wondering if anyone had information on a "possible" Elizabeth Bagg( born 18sep1791 who married a Nicholas Howell.(born 1787). They lived in Carbonear. But i know the Baggs have ties to the Broad Cove area.
( I put possible because there have been many notions of this elusice grandmothers last name- a recent posting suggested "bagg"

I aslo read of a Frances Bagg born 1797 and married a Ben Kipper... I mention this because the person who posted the messgae wrote that they thought Frances may have come from Conception Bay or had ties there.

Elizabeth might have been the daughter of Hugh and Jane Bagg.
