John,

You make an excellent point. There is so very much conjecture and assumptions made in Genealogical research, it is difficult if not impossible to prove beyond a doubt who your ancestors were. As an example I can trace my ancestry back to Mattie Mitchell but have to make the assumption that Joey Smallwood was correct In his statement in the Encyclopedia of Newfoundland and Labrador concerning Mattie Mitchell. To prove beyond all doubt I would have to verify Joey Smallwoods research.

I cane across this thread while conducting some research for a friend who is trying to piece together her family tree. She has traced as far back as Ralph Brake but has to find necessary documentation to establish the case.

She fits as one of the four children of Robert and Jane Unknown Park. The early spelling was sometimes Parkes...some folks mistook the s for r; an honest mistake.
From my analysis the other four were Catherine, William and James.

Robert Joyce (1) born at Fellow Cove, Placentia Bay in 1834 was my g grandfather and he was married three times. He married his first wife, my g grandmother in 1859 at Placentia and they had three children together. Upon her death, g grandfather moved to Port au Port where he met Emily Duffneys. Emily was born November 23, 1840 and she married Robert Joyce (widower) at Sandy Point on Oct. 2, 1870. Upon Emily's death, Robert(1) then married Susanna Whelan of Flowers Cove and Thomas your grandfather was the son of Susanna and Robert (1). G Grandfather was 83 years of age when he fathered his last child by Susanna. Robert Joyce (1) passed away May 17, 1918. May 18, 1920 Susanna Whelan Joyce age 4o years married Thomas Luscombe, born September 1854 was 66 years of age. He was born at Loon Bay,Herring Neck, NL. He and Susanna were married in the United Church Parsonage in Curling. I have one child listed for this couple Leddie born October 1920. Upon the death of Thomas Luscombe, Susanna married a Mr. Murphy.

I have recently spoken to a grandson of g grandfather's Robert (1) from his third marriage to (Susanna Whelan)and it was Robert (1) that she married.

I have done extensive research on the Joyce Family of Placentia and to my knowledge Robert Park was never a part of this family.

Add to this the fact that Robert Park and Jane were a family when Polkinghorne took the census on or before 25 September 1838 and Ralph Brake made his will in England on 05 August 1838 and I think we can dismiss the idea that Jane, wife of Robert Park 2 was Jane Matthews Brake.
