Looking for info on my gggrandfather, John Ryan who married Hanna McLean-Gallop on Sept 29, 1879 at St. Anne's RC church in Codroy. John's father was Michael Ryan. John and Hanna had 4 children, one of them was my ggrandmother, Annie b. 1880. I cannot find a DOB or death record for John.

I am all ears! Well, ears and eyes. What can you tell me? Was my great grandfather her last marriage or her second? It seems she died in Halifax while living with her daugher's family along with my grandfather Edward Michael (Eddie) Ryan, but with no husband. Was this after yet a third separation, divorce or death? Did my great grandfather John die while married to her, or was there some other reason for their separation that you know of?

Just thinking. If she died Hannah Ryan, that implies that my great grandfather was her thrid husband. So many questions I know, but we are all very interested in your news. If you wish, feel free to connect with me direclty at mark.ryan@rbc.com, or ryannine@telus.net.

Thanks

Mark

Hi Pat:

John Ryan is my great-great-grandfather, his daughter, Annie, my great-grandmother. Do you know when and where John was born and died? Although I have the information on Hanna's death and burial, I have no information on when she was born, where and who her parents were. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Cathy

The information in your first paragraph above conflicts with that in the third paragraph. Can you help me clarify this? It says William Gallop was dead by 1879 in the first paragraph but married Hannah on 1896 in the third paragraph.

My grandfather was Edward Michael Ryan, whose wedding certificate from Halifax in 1916 says he was the son of John Ryan and Hannah McLean of St John's NFLD. No other John and Hannah show on any available records from that era but from Codroy Valley.

Sadly we have no record of Edward Michael being born to John and Hannah. I did speak with a descendant of Edward who confirmed that they in fact had 6 children including my grandfather, but have never been able to confirm it in any vital stat files.

We have smoke but no fire. The 1911 census shows Hannah living with her daughter in Halifax, and I believe she was buried there in Halifax in the same cemetery that my grandfather was memorialized as one of the unidentified many who died in the Halifax explosion in 1916. The 1911 census shows her living with an Eddie but that could have been Edward Joseph Benedict. My grandfather married in Halifax, so that could suggest Eddie was him but the actual record is fuzzy (literally).

Mark:

According to my Grandmother and her sister (the 2 daughters of Annie Ryan), John Ryan and Hanna McLean-Gallop had 4 children. Anne born 1880, Nora born 1883, Edward Joseph born 1886 and Mathilda Frances 1888-1951.

I did see on the the NS website for births, marriages and deaths that Edward M. Ryan was married in 1916, his parents being John & Hanna. The entry indicates that he is 22 year old. Edward Joseph would have been 30 years old in 1916.

Hanna Ryan died Dec 21, 1930 and is buried Mount Olivet, Halifax, NS.

Some details of your grandfather's life are still a mystery, as they are for my great-grandmother, Annie Ryan, who disappeared between the 1901 and 1911 Census. My grandmother and her sister never knew what happened to their mother. They were raised in an orphanage in Halifax and their brother, Edward died at 17 in the First WW.

All of the information I sent was from the records of the St, Anne Catholic church in Codroy.
My Gallop line goes back to the Gallop line from Fortune in the 1700's.Williiam Gallop and Jane Sams came to Codroy in 1835 along with his 2 sisters Elizabeth Young and Jane Moore. They had been born and married in Fortune. They and their children were received into the C of E from the Methodist Faith by Rev. Wix on his visit around NFLD.
accompanying Rev. Wix was Mr. William Gallop who was the Newman and Co Representative in NFLD, and served at Gaultois and Harbour Breton
I have several William Gallops in Newfoundland that appear to have roots in Dorset. They used William, Joshua, Amelia, John, Henry and Maryann when naming their children
My grandmother Marcella Gallop b.1865 was the youngest child of John Gallop and Sarah Evans
