Surnames: Prudence Clarke b.1856 in Heart's Desire, and her sister Elizabeth Clarke b.1871
Hi Alexander,
Hope you are still on this list.
I, actually there are now two of us, looking for a home for two sisters, that is, the parents of two sisters.
Prudence Clarke b. 1856 in Heart's Desire, and her sister Elizabeth Clarke b. 1871.
Prudence Clarke 1856 - 1933, according to the Heart's Content 1921 census, Prudence was born in Heart's Desire and was of the Catholic faith and became alienated from her family when she married Alfred Sooley, 1847 - 1912 of Heart's Content who was of the an Anglican/Epicopal/Church of England faith and they stayed in Heart's Content had a family. I believe that St. Mary's Church in Heart's Conten had a fire (or two) and some of their records were lost. (as I thought that on the marriage record the parents names would be recorded).
Now, there was at least one (maybe even more)of her siblings with whom she maintained contact. The one for-sure sibling who kept in touch, was her sister, Elizabeth Clarke 1871 - 1925. We don't know in what town or city Elizabeth was born, but we can follow what happened to Prudence we know her sister Elizabeth married a John Hunt. I believe that I noted in the Montreal, Quebec Drouin collection that Elizabeth married into the Anglican faith as well. They made their home in Montreal and they had a daughter Anna Frances Hunt who married a Daniel Pat Harrington from Montreal & they settled in New York.
I put a message out on the board last week, but we can't seem to find Catholic church records either of their Christening or Corfirmation, as those records would also be able to reveal parentage of these girls.
I did have a reponse to my query last week of a possibility of the girls being the related to a George Clarke Sr. of Heart's Desire as the timing would fit when he was having his family but there are no known records of proof of to whom they belong. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Allison

Hi Allison,
I also have tried to separate some of the Clarke families from Heart's Desire and Heart's Content, also the Coombs, George, Crocker, and also the Lahey family.
The RC Cemetery in Heart’s Desire has one tombstone with four Clarke names.

Elizabeth Age 86- died 1925
Thomas age 65- died 1942
Bessie age 8 died 1935
Mary age 19 died 1941
Rest in Peace
I was told that this Elizabeth was the mother of this Thomas Clarke.

I think this Thomas Clarke 1877-1942 married Caroline Crocker born 1888. I wondered if this Elizabeth is Elizabeth Clare1843-1929 who was married to a Thomas Clarke although the dates don’t match.
Also Eliza Clarke of Thomas & Eliza Clarke born June 4 1870 Carb. Parish. Baptised June 5 1870 at Carbonear, father FM, source Carb VS Vol. 47. It is likely this baptism was in Hearts Desire.
The next entry was Mary Prudence no surname, I wondered if this could be a child of Thomas & Elizabeth Clarke but older, maybe considered an adult at that time.
Thomas Clarke & Elizabeth Clare were married 1866. So The Prudence born 1856 would not be her sister.
Have you uncovered anything new?
Leonard

Surnames: Clarke, Sooley in Heart's Content and Heart's Desire
Hi Len,
Now I have to go by memory, as I am house sitting so do not have access to my written notes. But do have access to what I put in my Ancestry tree and I can recall my discussion with Rene Estrada the Archivist at the Basilica in St John's......

John Clark marriage to Susanna Clark 15 Dec 1833, Parish of Carbonear Methodist marriage
John Clark & Susannah Clark of same place were married in this house with the consent of all parents . James Geo. Herrigan Methodist Minister. John & Susannah signed with an X indicating they were illiterate. Witness: Thos Fenton & __ illegible signature. Parish Records: Methodist Carbonear Marriages Box 3 1794 - 1848

Birth of Daughter Elizabeth: Born 6 Aug 1836. Christened 4 Sept 1836, by Rev George Ellidge Methodist Missionary, Crocker's Cove
Birth of son Thomas: Thomas, son of John & Susannah Clarke, he a Planter of Crocker's Cove. Thomas, born 5 Nov 1840 in Crocker's Cove Christened 17 Dec 1840. Performed by Methodist Missionary Rev. Faulkner Parish Records: Methodist Carbonear Baptisms 1835 - 1907 Box 2 Part I of II

17 January 1867 St. Patrick's Roman Catholic parish Carbonear
Marriage of Thomas Clarke to Eliza Clare: witnesses were Terence Kennedy & Theresa Geary. Priest was Rev. John O'Connor. Although prior marital status not given could be Thomas' 2nd marriage. Carbonear Marriages 1850 - 1899, St Patrick's Catholic Parish Carbonear (3rd degree consanguinous) ... relationship according to Rene Estrada a cousin also you will note in next entry they already had a child at least one child. Notes on Eliza Clare: Eliza Clare: could not find an Eliza Clare but did find a baptism for an Eliza Clarke for time range...Eliza Jane, daughter of Solomon & Elizabeth Clarke, Planter of Freshwater Born 1 Apr 1840 Christened 8 Sept 1841 by Rev Faulkner, Methodist Missionary

1. William Clarke Baptism: 2 Feb 1867 Catholic baptism, Priest: John O'Connor Catholic baptism, (conception extra-marital) baptized 1 month after parents marriage; note: Rene told me that this means like it looks child born outside of marriage, and in McAlpines Directory According to the McAlpine's Directory of 1904 there was a William Clarke, son of Thomas, who was a fisherman in Heart's Desire.

2. Elizabeth Clarke baptised 4 June 1870 Heart's Desire, Catholic, Carbonear parish, Newfoundland and directly below this is

3. Mary Prudence, surname not given (a Wesley) no sponsors baptism in Catholic church, the same day as her sister Eliza, baptism was written in directly on line below. Parents names not stated giving impression of adult/older child baptism. Priest J O'Connor. My 2x great grandmother, Prudence would have been age 13, old enough to speak for herself.***** When I spoke to Rene Estrada re these findings, he strongly felt that Elizabeth and Mary Prudence were indeed siblings although the priest neglected document the surname of Mary Prudence on baptismal info, and the fact that she was first baptised Methodist is important also. So we are not sure, if but it is likely that Thomas was married before, or maybe he had long time relationship with Eliza Clare since they were very young. Personal family knowledge is that Prudence and Elizabeth did continue to have a close relationship into adulthood. Elizabeth Clarke moved to Montreal, Quebec and married a fellow John Hunt Montréal (Anglican Grace Church), Québec, had two children a boy Jack, who my Dad visited him and his family in the 1950's and a girl Anna Frances (went by Frances) she married Daniel Pat Harrington Sr, the vaudeville actor they moved to NYC were parents to 2 boys Terry and Daniel "Pat Harrington" Jr, , the guy who played the apartment super Dwayne Schneider, on the sit com "One Day At A Time" back in the 1970's. and he married and had kids ..so know for sure Prudence and Elizabeth kept in contact probably due to the fact that she also did not marry Catholic. Info on my 2x Great Granny Prudence Clarke: b. 11 June 1856 d. 19 Dec 1933, married Alfred Sooley/Suley about 1872. Their Church of England marriage records were burned in a church fire & had 8 known children.

Other kids of Thomas Clarke and Eliza Clare Clarke:
4. Bernard Clarke : June 1872
5.Theresa Clarke: 1875 (know for fact this woman travelled with her sister Elizabeth Clarke-Hunt to NYC to check out vaudeville scene, a cousin of mine spoke to Pat Harrington Jr and he remembered stories about this)
6.Thomas Clarke: 1877-1942 he married a woman named Caroline, I think had a few children Alex 1915- William 1917- , Mary 1922-1941 , and "Bessie" 1927-1935
7.Lawrence Clarke: 1884-1906

So Len that is what I managed to dig up on my Clarke line.

Hi Allison
It’s also very curious to me about Pat Harrington from Montreal, for my wife is descendant of Patrick Harrington 1813 and Elizabeth Quinn 1817 of Carbonear.
Cheers Leonard

Re Daniel Patrick Harrington. The Harrington in Newfoundland go back at least the 1750s in Carbonear, Harbour Grace area. But our Patrick Harrington came from Country Cork, Ireland and had other relatives in Boston as insinuated from the following.
Boston Pilot add, dated 8-12-1854:
12 August 1854, of Patrick Harrington, native of the parish of Ballcodey, Co Cork, who sailed from Cork in '29, and is supposed to be in Harbor Grace, or some part of Newfoundland. Information of him will be received by addressing Michl Driscoll, 98 South St, Boston, Mass. Source NL, GenWeb Newspaper Records, Avalon South Region, The Pilot", Boston Newspaper Announcements
Maybe you know John Patricks father’s name and where he was born.
Thanks Leonard
