From the message board the Tobin name hit me. Have you done any research on the Tobins of Witless Bay? My Tobin ancestors came from Ireland pre 1831, 5 brothers in all, 2 settled in newfoundland and Thomas Patrick and Nicholas settled around Sydney, vape breton Island,NS. Some of the probable Tobin names in NFLD might be Richard, Edward, William, Henry. Any interest?

Sorry, I don't think I've come across a single Richard Tobin in the family, certainly not between 1800 and 1890.

My earliest Tobin ancestor in Newfoundland was Laurence. He arrived around 1803. What suggests a connection to your family is that he was married in Sydney at St. George's (Church of England) on April 28, 1802. He married Eleanor Denny who according to family lore, was the daughter of a Micmac chief. Laurence and Eleanor had their first child , Laurence, baptized in Newfoundland, March 15, 1803. Family tradition has it that they had 14 children, although only 13 are named in Laurence's will. They were Laurence, Mary, Rebecca, Nicholas, Eleanor, Thomas, Dennis (my gg grandfather), John, Bridget, Catherine, William, Philip and James. According to one source, the fourteenth (although not the youngest) may have been Mark and he may have moved to Placentia.
Laurence died in 1852, Eleanor in 1868 at the age of 84. My father said that Laurence came from Ireland, but we don't know where. He thought it could be Waterford. I have some sketchy evidence that my Laurence left Ireland because he got into trouble with the authorities during the Rebellion of 1798.
1831 sounds kind of late for your five brothers to be related to Laurence. Three of your names show up among Laurence's sons: Thomas, Nicholas and William. In later generations there were two Henrys and one Patrick, no Richards or Edwards.
