Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
Hello, My grandfather was Philip Healey, born in Petty Harbour. He emigrated to Boston, serving in the US Navy during WWI. His brother, Martin, emigrated to Maine and served as a merchant marine.
My husband and I visited Petty Harbour ten years ago, and learned so much. We plan a return trip this summer and would appreciate any direction in our research.

Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
Hi Ann: I have several Philip Healey's in my file but I am presuming your grandfather was Philip J. Healey, born 1890, son of William J. Healey & Mary J. Butler? Martin Patrick Healey went to Millinocket, Maine and raised a family of 7. I would love to know more about your grandfather and his family as I have little on them. I can give you his background if you are interested. I'm heading to Petty Harbour with my husband in two weeks. We could exchange information now and I can then see what questions you might still have. Trishe

Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
Sorry for not getting back to you. We had some medical issues here and by the time I got back into things, I forgot you. I don't have Patrick Hannaford's birth (just that he was born in 1855) but I have a source who might have it. I am heading to Newfoundland in 2 weeks time and can look for the source then. I would LOVE to hear anything you know about the Pridham/Predhams! And anything on the French family. And the Hearn family. Just in case. What else can I help you with? I have some on the Hannaford, Chafe, Stack families. Let me know who or what you want. Trishe

Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
Thank you Trishe!
Yes, Martin was my grandfather's brother. I would love to learn more. We are planning a tr. ip back to Petty Harbour this summer. One of the loveliest places we have traveled to. Where do you stay? Please alert us to any nice accommodations you may find in the area.
Last night, I spoke with the son of Philip's brother, William. He is sending photos of my grandfather, who passed before my birth. My mother, hilip's is Eleanor Healey Barry-Hoffman. She just turned 84 on May 8th. She doesn't know much about her father's family, but would love to learn more.
Thank you, Ann Flaherty

Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
Hi Ann: Since I did not have William's marriage, I don't know about his children either. I only had marriages for Philip, Martin & Richard. And of course, their ancestors. Photos would be lovely. We are staying at Harbour House, right in the middle of Petty Harbour. There are three apartment units (1 one-bedroom, 2 two-bedroom) and they come with everything, including a private patio for each. A little more expensive than some places (abt $1150 for a 7 -night stay) but worth it. They still have some openings during July & August but they book quickly. It came highly recommended to us, even from people who live there. Google "Harbour House Petty Harbour". Congratulations to your Mother!

Re: Hannaford, Healey, Hickey Petty Harbour
I believe I have some information on Patrick Hannaford and Theresa Walsh. Those are the names of my second-great grandparents. My great grandfather, James Joseph Hannaford, was born in Petty Harbour on April 2, 1889. He moved to Brooklyn, NY at age 15 where he worked as a taxi driver until his death on January 23, 1948.
It seems highly likely, though not 100% certain, that James is the brother of the Samuel Joseph Hannaford described by annec105. I went to the archives at the Rooms in St. John's in July and was able to verify James' parents and grandparents.
His parents, as previously stated, were Patrick Hannaford and Theresa (spelled "Teresa" on the birth record but I think that might be a Latin thing done by the Catholic church since the entire document is written in Latin).
Theresa Walsh was baptized on April 4, 1858. This would have made her 101 at the time she died. Does this seem correct? I don't have a lot of information about her from my family. I believe she had family who moved to Brooklyn. Did Theresa live in Newfoundland her entire life?
This Theresa Walsh's parents were Thomas Walsh and Mary Legros. They were married in Petty Harbour on February 3, 1850. I have Thomas's birth date recorded as circa 1828. I honestly can't remember my source for this, maybe the age was listed on the marriage record? I have his death date as June 4, 1887. Again, I'm drawing a blank as to my source on that. The Grand Banks site gave an approximation of his cemetery plot (Belvedere in St. John's) but we spent hours there and couldn't find it. I've had no luck figuring out who Thomas's parents were and/or if he was born in Newfoundland. Walsh is such a common name and there are very few records available online for that time.
I was able to find a birth record for Mary Legros at St. Raphel church in Glengarry Ontario. I believe this is probably the right person but who knows for sure.
I'd really LIKE to believe this is the correct Mary Legros because I was able to trace her family back a VERY long way. Her parents were Eustache Legros and Marguerite/Margaret Farand. They were both from Vaudreuil, Quebec. I can send more info if needed, but if you look up Eustache and Marguerite you'll find both their trees go way back.
