I am researching my great grandparents John POWER & Rose Ann PHELAN or WHELAN of St. Mary's NF. John was born around 1815 and Rose Ann in 1823. John could have moved to St. Mary's from the Soutthern Shore, possibly Brigus. They had five children: Michael who married Johanna BONIA; James who married Theresa WALSH; John who married Ann BREEN; Mary who married Andrew MOONEY & Johanna who married William BONIA.
John's siblings were: Mary/Margaret who married John PEDDLE; Catherine who married Michael HALLERAN & Patrick who married Johanna GRANT. John & his son Michael died in March of 1875 on the ice floes off of St. Vincent's when he together with about 12 other neighbours were lost when they tried to salvage a French vessel that had been abandoned when it got stuck in the ice.
