To Helen or other Mills and Bussesy's: From Helen's post above, "It was very distressing to my father, who grew up in St. John's, not to be allowed to talk to his relatives. Imagine."
I have a story. Abraham Bussey and Sarah Jane Mills had four children: Alice Maud Bussey, John H Bussey, Arthur Edward Bussey and Sadye Mae Bussey or Sadie May Bussey. My grandmother was Sadie. In my research travels, I looked for descendants from all of them. John H married Evangeline Salicrup y Requena (Spanish heritage) from Puerto Rico in NYC. Tracing John H's decendants led to his son, James Edward Bussey. James married Jean Kosk (Polish heritage). James was an NYC policeman and was tragically murdered during a store robbery at 44th and 9th street in Manhattan in 1945.
Jean removed her 3 children from any contact with any Bussey for the rest of her life. History repeating itself.
In 2013, I found Jean's children now in their early '70's. That led to contacting Jean's grandchildren. One of those lines is a Bussey surname. They had no idea of their lineage and no idea the Bussey's were from St. John's, Newfoundland. They now know their family history and we are all extremely close and have vowed to break the Bussey curse of not staying in touch. My newly found 2nd cousins are amazing!
