I am trying to trace back beyond my great grandmother, Rebecca Hibbs (1884-1960). She was born in Portugal Cove, and moved to Foxtrap where she married James Batten.
I don't know anything about Rebecca's family, other than her mother was known as "Polly", and they might have lived on Bell Island at some point in the family history.
And leads or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: HIBBS of Portugal Cove
The latest information that I've picked up is that our Hibbs family is from a part of Portugal Cove known as Protestant Town, which is actually listed in some of the older census records.
I'm going to try to visit the church archives and see if I can find a baptismal record for Rebecca. If there's any connection to your Jonathan or Michael, I'll let you know.

Re: HIBBS of Portugal Cove
A bit of a breakthrough this week - I found out that Rebecca's parents were named Samuel Hibbs and Mary Allen, so I have gotten back another generation. Any additional information on this family would be appreciated.

Re: HIBBS of Portugal Cove
My grandmother was Mary Costello nee. Hibbs. The only information I have about that side of the family goes back to her parents, Michael Joesph Hibbs and Margaret Anne Kent(b.Oct.21,1904 d.Aug 14,1975).If you have anything farther back then that or more complete I'd appreciate it.

Re: HIBBS of Portugal Cove
According to my information Jonathan Hibbs (1849-1926) married Elizabeth Cahill (1852-1926). Their children included: Susannah, Henry, Mary Ann, Michael (my grandfather), Jacob, Margaret, Caroline, Jordon and Edgar (Hector). Elizabeth Cahill's parents were Patrick Cahill and Mary Geehan. has anyone found information on Jonathan's parents and siblings? Also I am wondering if there is a connection between Mary Geehan and Patrick Geehan who was hung for murder in St. John's on July 1, 1872.
