My father was Kenneth Sweetapple, son of William and Lydia White. born in Newfoundland on May 12, 1888. I know he had twin brothers, one named Martin and a sister Jane, possibly Eliza Jane. I think there was also a fifth child. My father died in 1958. Does this help?

I might have a connection for you.
I have a Jane Sweetapple born Apr 1886 in St. John's according to the 1921 census. She married William Pike (Mar 1885) of Flat Island, PB. The names of the children seem to fit into your family. They are: Ida, Florence, Kenneth,
William, Harold, Dorothy and Jean.

That sounds like my father's sister although I did not know the size of her family. My parents visited Newfoundland in the late 1940's and were later visited by Jane and a daughter, possibly Florence. Jane's husband was policeman and jailor in Grand Falls. Thank you for the information.

Yes, lots of people have sent me information since. Your father was my grandfather's brother. The fifth child's name was Hubert. Exactly what date did your father die?

We are definitely talking about the same family.
You might have the story a little confused, because it was
Florence (my aunt) who was married to the policeman,
Edgar Pittman. Edgar was my mother's brother and eventually became the police chief of St. John's.
Florence recently died.
Here is her obituary:
PITTMAN, Florence M. - Passed peacefully away at St. Clare`s Mercy Hospital on Monday, April 2, 2001, Florence Maude Pittman, age 90 years. Predeceased by her son Munden (June 1995). Pittman; two grandchildren: Arthur Pittman (Julie) of Edmonton, AB, and Holly Lalonde (Gerome) of Ottawa; three great-grandchildren: Sarah Pittman, Melissa and Vincent Lalonde; sisters: Jean Garcia of New Jersey, USA, and Dorothy Gerkey of Fla., USA; nephew Roger Pike (Brenda), Grand Falls-Winsor; sister-in-law Lucy Foote (Max), Kelligrews. Resting at Carnell`s Funeral Home, 329 Freshwater Road, on Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. - 12 Noon, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m., and Thursday from 10 a.m. - 12 Noon.
