Eric the brother of Florence, Harold Pike was married to my wifes aunt. They lived in Nova Scotia. Florence is buried three graves away from my daughter who died suddenly and unexspectedly last April. I noted from Florence's headstone that she died a couple of weeks earlier in early April. It's a small world isn't It. John

I know I'm a decade late on this thread but I am so happy to find others looking to find Sweetapples in Newfoundland.

My great grandmother was Annie Eileen Marie Sweetapple born October 14, 1909 in Glovertown she died April 19 1999 in NS. I believe (not 100%) her father was Stephen or it's her grandfather not sure but she comes somewhere from a Stephen Sweetapple I know that. She was Salvation Army doing missionary work where my great great grandmother took her in that is how she met her future husband Robert Tilley. They had 4 children in Clarenville then moved to NS.

Any info would be appreciated. You can email me at gaiazchild at msn dot com

My GGGF was John Rumbolt who married Mary Ann Sweetapple.
They lived at Battle Harbour. John worked with Slade Co.She was born at Gunning Island ,Labrador abt.1780.She is buried at Matthew's Cove, Battle Harbour, Labrador. No date of her death was given.
If there is a connection to your family I would be really interested in hearing from you.

Hi Francis

do you have any documentation on MaryAnn because I have only heard that verbally from Ross Rumbolt who has since passed away.

I have been questioned by Sandy Payne as he feels the Sweetaples were not in Labrador that early

I found a site managed by Donna Bolger who has Mary Ann Sweetapple born in 1780 at Gunning Island , Labrador. She married John Rumbolt.I don't know if she has a document of proof. It may be just another bit of information that you got from Ross Rumbolt.I am enjoying doing a search though. I seem to be connected to Rumbolt, Pilgrim,Genge, Buckle, and Myers.

Some of the information came from your site and from other connections as well.

I also have a Mary Anne Sweetapple who md. John Rumbolt in my family tree. The info I have on her is...Mary Anne Sweetapple b. 1785 Gunning Island, Lab. / d. 1850 Matthews Cove, Battle Hr., Lab.
Besides that, I have no siblings or parents for her. I have been talking to several people and they tell me that there were no such person as Mary Anne Sweetapple. I have not changed this in my tree because, without proof, she belongs there, I believe. That being said, these people could not tell me who John Rumbolt was md. too.
My email address is...

I have a tree as well here on Ancestry.ca
Maybe we can exchange info, if you like, I have loads more of Sweetapples, Barfoots & Rumbolts in my tree as well.

The Rev. Ross Rumbolt stated that he believed John's wife was named Mary Anne Sweetapple but I doubt that he was aware of the available Sweetapple documentation at that time
He was also unable to make the connection between John Rumbolt and his own Rumbolt family. In fact, he believed that they were two separate lines. I don't believe that the records available today support that view.
Despite the erroneous information that is continually transcribed from tree to tree on this site there is not a shred of a prayer of a hint that a Mary Anne Sweetapple ever existed let alone that she married John Rumbolt.
The Sweetapple's of Labrador, of Bonavista Bay, and of Harbour Grace all originated from the same family line of Dorsetshire (or Dorset if you prefer). Their family tree is well documented through birth, baptism, and marriages records in England.
Nowhere in those records, or in Newfoundland records, is there a Mary Ann, Mary, or Anne born around 1780 (plus/minus 10 years) that is not accounted for nor is there a widow of a Sweetapple husband that would qualify.
Admittedly, documentation for the Sweetapple's of Gunning Island is almost nonexistant. But, they were the family of Timothy and his wife Hannah; this is proven in Timothy's will. Dorsetshire records state that Timothy was baptised 1786 so he was clearly not a contemporary of John Rumbolt in Battle Harbour and he was certainly not old enough to be the father of a Mary Anne born in Labrador around 1780.
Timothy and Hannah's daughter did marry James Rumbolt (son of John) and this may be the source of the confusion over the Sweetapple/Rumbolt connection. Her name, however, was not Mary Anne.
Marie, you state that you believe Mary Anne Sweetapple belongs on your tree because there is no proof that she didn't exist (fair enough, it's your tree) but I take the opposite view. I don't include her because there's no evidence that she did exist.

Also, I have never seen a death record, cemetery record, cemetery transcription, or headstone photo that would suggest that a Mary Anne Rumbolt, or Mary Anne Sweetapple wife of John Rumbolt, died at or is buried at Matthews Cove.
