Upon reading the Diarys of Joseph Small, I read about Burgeo and the Matthews family who were probably the first family there. Had big business. Amelia Samways married John Matthews, who passed away then married Ex Sergeant Kelland. Had son Rubert by first marriage, he married Theresa Vatcher had two children both girls etc. Hope helps, I need some help too on Samways of Burgeo. glad to share. Judy

Actually. no, I can only say he was a man of perhaps wealth in those days, whos father, as I get from his mention of the writers father, had a big business on Small Is., near Burgeo. Burgeo, I would say just from reading alot on the net was the next best fishing grounds next to the Grand Banks. Joseph Small was possible somewhat of an author as well as businessman who knew about all the people and families around the south coast. I believe from my readings he was asked to write about each family and each established company who were, or operated out of Burgeo. He wrote four Diarys. Thats all I know. Something like others authors of NFLD like Cuff, Munn, Crosbie, etc. Judy

Hi Judy,
Thanks for your reply on Joseph Small. I'll have to dig a little deeper into my Small tree to find any connection.

Daphne: I am interested in any information you have on the families of Thomas Strickland and Samuel Matthews from the South Coast . In particular I am trying to locate information on Thomas Strickland (b. 1842) married in 1874 to Frances Susan LeFresne (b. abt 1854). They both may have been born in Isle Aux Morts. I do not know if Frances & Thomas had any children. Samuel Matthews was from Burgeo and married in 1843 to Frances Curry. Samuel and Frances had two children; Sarah (b. 1844) & James (b. 1846). Samuel was one of three brothers living in Burgeo and not related to the other Matthews family according to Small's Diary.

Surnames: Matthews Brake
Hi, I am very interested in any information you have about "Jane Matthews" (1773 - 1819) who married Ralph Brake (1760 - 1842). Do you know her Parents Names? Did you ever get the information about if Jane Matthews is Native or Micmac?
My family history starts in the Bonne Bay District, and I am also related to another family of Matthews that were in Petites on the South Coast in the early 1800's. I do not know if there is any relation with who you are looking into.
Any information will be great.
Thanks,
Justin Burden <jburden78@yahoo.com>
