Is anyone researching the Beck name in the Swift Current, Sound Island, or Woody Island area?
I am particularly interested in the following Swift Current branch of the Beck family mentioned in the 1921 census, but I would love to communicate with anyone researching any of the Newfoundland Beck's.
Thank you,
Valerie

I am researching the Beck's of Swift Current and the Stacey's of Sound Island. My Father is a Beck from Swift Current. I would love to exchange information with you. please write me at jsstacey@hotmail.com. The Beck family tree is a little tricky in Swift Current though, there is said to be 3 different family tree's of Beck's and I think they all have a Henry Beck in them!

Fennine, I believe you have already spoken to Tracey Crocker about the Beck's of Swift Current. My Grandmother was Sarah J. Beck who married William Andrews.Sarah was the sister of Edwin(Ted) Beck of Swift Current, some siblings were Calvin(Cal, Lloyd and Vera Beck.Isuspect that the Henry and Christina Beck who lived across the road from Uncle Ted was his parents because Cal moved into the house after they died.I'm not absolutely sure of this, but I am in the process of confirming this.Hope this helps,thanks.Harve.

Hey Jennine
Sorry about misspelling your name on the last posting. Tracey Crocker was looking for the parents of her GGrandmother Sarah J. Beck, thought you might like to know that Sarah Becks parents were Thomas Beck and Elizabeth Beck (nee Brushett)she was from Passend near Burin. Roger Beck from Swift Current confirmed this for me.I found their headstones in the Methodist Cementary on Sound Island. Hope this helps you sort out the Becks.

Could there be any connection with the Beck's of Swift Current, Sound Island, or Woody Island area and a Horatio Henry Beck of Bay Du Nord, Fortune Bay? Horatio married a Julia Davidge from Mose Ambrose at Belleoram in 1879
and is believed to be the first member of the Beck family to settle at Bay du Nord. They had four children: Thomas George B. 1883; Mary Frances b. 11885; Elizabeth b. 1888; and Horatio b. 1890.

Have you all considered that there may be a connection between the Becks of Swift Current and the Becks of St. Lawrence?
There was a Henry Beck in St. Lawrence in the late 1700 and early 1800s and his decendants are still there today.

The Henry Beck you are speaking of is probably the same Henry Beck refered to in "A History of Newfoundland" by D.W. Prouse 1895:

In the last French war, before the battle of Waterloo, Mr. Henry Beck, an old Englishman, ancestor of the Becks of St. Lawrence, had his fishing skiff armed. In the spring of 1814 he captured a large French banker by boarding her and driving the crew off the deck. He was taking his prize into Harbour Breton. It was a fine day. The French cook was in the galley getting dinner ready for all hands. An altercation took place between one of Beck's fishermen and the cook. As the vessel was passing Little Cape, the cook threw the contents of the frying pan into the Englishman's face, blinding him. This was a preconcerted signal agreed on among the French crew. They seized Beck's men and threw Beck into the hold, breaking his bones; he died soon after.
The Frenchman took the banker to Boston, USA where the St. Lawrence men were kept prisoners until the autumn when they returned home.

I believe that the Beck families from Swift Current and Sound Island are probably related to this indiviual but haven't been able to make the connection.
