Surnames: Gill Beaton
Hello all,
My apologies for some repeats, but I think it's necessary to start a new thread with this family, as the Paul's dominated the other thread at wigwam point.

I am seeking information on the following family, specifically:

MARY BEATON
(unsure if maiden name, parents or origin)
b. Unknown - betw. 1800-1815 "didn't belong to anyone"
m. to JAMES GILL (b. around 1799 Wilborne, Dorset, England; died Feb 1869 Exploits Burnt Island?) 1830-1836, unknown location - an Evans family tree has them married or a record existing at Pritchard's Island, Bonavista - unsure if same family
d.Unknown.
Children:
1. Charles Beaton GILL (my 2d Gr Grandfather), b. 1832-33, Kite Cove, Exploits; died March 20, 1887 Botwood. I do not have a certificate yet. Known in Peterview (heritage book) as "Charles Gill" who was a fisherman along with his brothers in the area.

+7 Jane, James, George, Sophia Ellen(1st), Alice, John Henry (who was interviewed/in several books re: his mother and Shanadhidit Nancy), Susan Gill.

Notes on Mary Beaton:
Mary Beaton worked as a servant in Mr. Peyton's house when Shanadhidit Nancy (one of the last Beothuks) resided there. I believe micmak1 Jackie referred to this story as well, as Mary being quite young and "didn't belong to anyone". Mary told her children about Nancy, and in the book "River Lords" Mary is beieved to be referred to as an Indian. To be confirmed as I cannot find a copy of the book - out of print? This story is also referred to in "The Beothuk or Red Indians: Aboriginals of Newfoundland" by Howley. John Gill's testament.

Also, I met with Gerald "Bud" Beaton in Botwood last week - wonderful man! And he said Nish Paul gave him a photo of a woman named "Mary Beaton" whom Nish thought was Gerald's grandmother, but was not? She was native, wearing a headdress. He believed she was originally from Nova Scotia, and that she returned there. This would not be his grandmother Mary Paul who lived and died in the area. I asked him if he thought it might be my Mary Beaton who married James Gill (much older) and he said, it might. He still may have the photo in storage. We can't prove it's her, but it would be quite a boon to find it!

My family is interested in confirming Mary Beaton's indian identity and our ancestry and pursuing status if it is not too late.

If anyone has info on this line of the family, and possible micmak/indian status - please contact me at kristam@rogers.com.

Thank you,

Krista M

Hi, I am looking for exactly the same info on
Mary Beaton and James Gill. If you have any new info I would be very interested. I do not have anything new, everything is a dead end.

Hi Krista
would love if you can share the photo!
I'm not a descendant, but I have relatives that are and I'm following this for them.
I thought Mary was from Exploits, but it could be a relative...as possible lead?
I also have no death date or place for Mary. Do you?

I may have some information that you may find helpful ... Mary Beaton was my ggg grandmother. I am a Gill from the Botwood/Indian Point area. Here is the info my family has about her.

"MARY GILL was born between 1800-1815 (probably the latter). She was a servant in the home of MR. PEYTON when SHANAWDITHIT "NANCY" was living there. MARY BEATON would tell her children about "NANCY" on long cold winter nights.

There is speculation if MARY BEATON was MI'KMAQ - there is no record of her birth that I could find and no parents for her either.

They were in the DOMINION POINT/WIGWAM POINT AREA at one time or the other. The GILL FAMILY was settled in the RED ROCK COVE AREA.

These two families were close though ALFRED BEATON & his wife MARY ANN PORTER and JAMES GILL (1800) DORSET ENGLAND & wife MARY BEATON."

Their children stood up for each other in various marriages as well as 3 of ALFRED BEATONS children married into the GILL FAMILY."

I know my sister has researched this a lot & she may have further info on this. She has read the book you spoke about & may have it. I will ask her.

If you found out anything further I would love to get that info from you. Also was the picture ever found?

Also ... I have a photo of Charles Beaton Gill. You may already have that but if not I would be willing to share it. Another thing ... It has always been known in our family that there was Indian in our heritage. My dad grew up knowing that his gg grandmother was Indian.

Hello everyone,
It has been 2 years and I have let this drop a bit, but now have a new inquiry so am re-investigating. I have asked Bud Beaton about the picture of the native woman that he believed to be Mary Beaton (no guarantees!), and I will advise when I hear back.

Also he mentioned that our Beatons were from Norris Arm North/Sandy Point, while his Beatons (likely close cousins) came from Nova Scotia. I am sure they must be related in some way as they were very tightly knit in Wigwam Point/Dominion Point area.

Also there is a Jesse Peyton on ancestry.ca and I would like to ask him about his relation Mr. John Peyton who employed Mary Beaton. I read his will but did not see anything. There may be journals of his in the archives in St. John which will likely tell more of the story of how he managed the Indians and employed some incuding Mary Beaton and the last Beothuk. Slowly legend will become reality as someone unearths a fact.

If anyone has a copy of the books mentioned please send the quoted passages that we can reference.

Thank you,

Krista M
