Fighting Family of Gushes Sends Five to Service
“Newfoundlanders” Volunteer for British and American Armed Forces on Declaration of War – by Joseph R. Snyder
Troy’s “fightingest family – “ of at least the best claimants to that title yet to appear live down at 6 Thompson Street where is domiciled the family of Mr. and Mrs. George F. Gushue, residents of Troy for the last 18 years.
The neighbors will tell you that the Gushue clan has built a reputation for quiet, industrious folk, at peace with everyone. That is they were at peace until the war broke out. Now things have changed.
For this is the roll call of the sons of Mr. and Mrs. Gushue – two volunteered for service in the British navy; one volunteered for service in the British army; two volunteered for service in the US Army when selective service was inaugurated; one is awaiting his draft call to report for service; another would like to go, but he is married and has his own family; and the youngest, approaching his 15th birthday fears that everything will be ended before he is old enough to go.
“Good Soldiers”
The five already in service, and the one who expects to go soon are good boys and make good soldiers, Mr. and Mrs. Gushue declared. Any fears they may entertain for safety are hidden carefully because “this is war.”
In fact, Mr. Gushue is very calm, and also very emphatic, when he says he’d “like to take a crack at those Japs himself.”
By way of proper introduction to the family of fighting sons, this is the way they line up:
England hadn’t been at war with Germany for long when two of the older brothers decided to do their bit. So Stephen and Philip Gushue wandered back to their old homestead in Newfoundland and there volunteered for the British navy.
Shortly they were followed by Patrick Gushue, who volunteered for the British army. That trio, from occasional veiled accounts, has been plenty of battle action.
Then Selective Service was inaugurated in the United States. John and Cyril V. Gushue were within the age limits so, rather than await their turn, they volunteered. John now is a corporal in a medical unit.
Gordon Ready to Go
Next in line comes Gordon, last of the gown sons to remain at home. He is ready to go as soon as his draft number is called.
The remaining two members of the family are William Gushue, who is married but still would like to get into service; and Frederick, “going on 15,” who thinks everything will be quiet before he’s old enough to make the grade.
In age, the eight sons range from 38, down to Frederick, 14.
The family came to Troy from Newfoundland 18 years ago when Mr. Gushue was engaged to act as engineer at St. Joseph’s Infant Home, a position he holds to this day. The old Newfoundland attachment was the basic reason the return of the three sons in British service.
Mr. Gushue performed all sorts of work before coming to Troy. He worked with the fishing fleet off the Grand Banks, learned his trade as a steam engineer and in spare time was a hunter.
During the World War he served in the British army with their Foresters Division, rating as an expert rifleman. This summer he tried his skill again and found that the old ability was still as good as it was 25 years ago. He’d like to exercise it nipping a few sons of Nippon.

The Times Record, Troy, NY, Saturday Evening, August 2, 1952 – REUNION – Father and son were reunited after 38 years. At the left is George F. Gushue, Sr., 78, of 6 Thompson Street. With him is his son, George F. Gushue, Jr., of Nova Scotia. When the Gushue family moved to Troy many years ago, young George decided he wanted to remain in Nova Scotia. He has been busy and it never was possible for him to visit his father. Early this week he and his family drove to Niagara Falls and from there telephoned to Troy. They were able to reach Mr. Gushue on the telephone and after talking to him, decided to pay a visit.
