The way that l have been told is that a coffin married a lodge who married a reid that married a mercer. Trying to find all connecting branches. Is anyone out there able to shed some light. Jane Buckle is my 3rd great grandmother. She married Patrick Merrigan in 1843 at Harbour Grace. They had 10 children. One child was born/bapt in Harbour Grace, while the others were born/bapt in Carbonear.

Do you have anything on Jane's siblings or parents?

That's interesting...Thomas Brown is my great-grandfather too! My grandmother is Thomas's daughter Bertha Louise who married John O'Gay. They had one son, Harry, who is my father.
Which of Thomas's 15 children is your grandparent?

About our great, great grandfather, Robert, I said he died in 1875 but it was really 1874. I have been to the graveyeard in New Harbour where he is buried.

I have an exact mtDNA match to Demasduit. My Mother's mother (born 1896) was Rachel Laborne/LeBorgne married to Joe Toney (who was Santu Toney's son)who died in 1980. The written history of our people is one-sided because it is written by non-natives. Anything written or oral from Native people is treated largely as myth. Scientists' claim that DNA does not lie, yet they theorize til the cows come home. That is all they have is a theory and they can't or won't come to concensus on much of anything. Whatever sounds best, becomes the facts in the end. One thing I do agree with is that DNA does NOT LIE. What is ...IS. The Meuse/Muise surname does come into my family's lineage so it is quite possible they are of Beothuk stock. Beothuk/Micmac/Algonkians, whatever, we are of the same stock and we are not extinct. I am a status Indian (L'nu) with Indian Affairs, Ottawa, Canada. I am not a wannabe and more people in my tribe should get their DNA done and demand that Demasduit's skull, and that of her husbands be returned to the place where they were taken from, so they can rest with their son, my blood relatives.

Is it possible you have some of your dates switched around? In your message you stated that he died in 1975 but then had children in 1886.

I think I may be a distant relation of yours: great-granddaughter of Robert's son Thomas. :)

I have just discovered my link to the Hoddinotts of that area. My great grandmother was Emma Hoddinott - sister to the Edmund who is Roy's father. In info I received from Jill Marshall it states that Roy was the son of Edmund born Jul 19 1894. He was married twice. I have 3 pages of info. There are NO known ancestors of the Beothuck in Newfoundland
If you read the history...you'll understand why. Muise is traced back to MicMac decent. If you were of Beothuck decent you would not have to dig to find your story. It would be out there.

Looking for information for Robert Brown, born 11 August 1840 in New Harbor, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. He died 29 December 1875. He married Louisa Hillier, from New Harbor, Trinity Bay, Newfoundland and Labrador, in 1886 and they had 4 children; John, William, Sam and Thomas.
Robert Brown is my great-great grandfather and I can find no further information about him.

I have worked at the MARY MARCH MUSEUM in Grand Falls-Windsor. This museum is dedicated to the last beothuk, DEMASDUIT, renamed Mary March by her European Captors. I have not come across any surnames yet in my beothuk research, but i have only worked there a short time. I do know that the most knowledgeable authority on the BEOTHUKS is INGLEBORE MARSHALL. She has written several books on her years of research. You can google her for more information.
If you ever come to NFLD. you must visit the museum. There iis also an actual site where the beothuks lived. There have been several thousand artifacts found belonged to them. It is an amazing site. I have been there and walked where they walked. It is the BOYDES COVE INTERPRETATION CENTRE. There are amazing paintings and sculptors of the beothucks done by local artist GERALD SQUIRES. Gerald spent some time on Exploits Island, where beothuks were. He recalls these people in his dreams, while on the island as a child. Anyway hope this can be some help to you. Any thing i can help you with, i will try my best.

I am researching the Hancock name as well. My ggg grandfather was Joseph Hancock born in 1839 and died on Jan 10, 1923 in Forteau, Labrador. I have heard that his father came from Englee area but I have no proof. Just wondering if anyone has information regarding a Hancock that crossed the Strait of Belle Isle and settled in Labrador.

am also interested in collins in dover which was also known as wellington in the 1935 census, which where i have found the collins i am researching.

The names were Malcolm and grace collins Grace's last name is thought to be button but i have reason to belive it might actually be butler but have not found any real proof. i would like to know who malcolms parents are.
Plus i have not been able to find malcolm and grace in the 1945 census but do know that malcolm did not die until 1962/1963 of which grace then remarried in the 70's to a belah button whom i found in silver fox island

if might have any information on these collins i would really appreciate

Looking for a John Peyton/Peton born abt 1951-1954 in Botwood Nfld. Born to a Ruby or Edna Peton. She had a sister Maizey/Maisey Peton. I believe Johns mom later married a Art Pollar.

I dont have much info, but my grandfather Frank Haggerty, (everyone called Melvin) apparently fathered a child with Peton before he met my grandmother, and many years ago received a phone call abut this son, Id be really interested in any peton peyton info.. I know its a long shot, but worth a try

It would be an interesting read since there were so many other liveable places on earth. The climate has changed dramatically over the years. We went there a couple of yrs ago for a white xmas and it didn't snow until early January. Apparently this yr there was a fair amt of snow but nothing like it was 50 yrs ago when one couldn't get out of the house unless they shovelled their way through.

A lot of English or Irish came here of course as a part of the Queen's Pleasure!

No problem, feel free to pass along my info to your cousin, I can send along what I have. Yes, the Pilgrim book was a compelling read, and I will have to hit the library for a copy of your title. My mother was from Newfoundland as well, and I have been able to note her familie's arrival on "the Rock" quite well. It was a mere coincidence that my wife's family is also from God's country..... discovered after we started dating... so my questions about the Hancock family carry some real interest. I am not so surprised that there are so many Hancocks in Newfoundland. If you have ever been there in the wintertime, you will quickly realize there is, um, not a lot of reasons to go outdoors. So what else do you do? My big question, still hunting for an answer, is how did they get to Nfld in the first place? That, I think, would be an interesting story to hear and relate.

Thanks Will for the information. It is my first cousin that is doing the family tree. I have a friend who is a newfie and we just visited there. Thats when I came across the book about Dr Grenfell and couldn't believe there were so many Hancock's mentioned. My ancestry is Irish and I would not be surprised about our connection with NL considering the number of Irish who migrated there.

My wife's mother is a Hancock from Engelee. I have just finished another Pilgrim book called "When Grenfell Cried", and Stan Hancock is mentioned is this book. It refers to my mother-in-laws Uncle Stan, who was a minister in Engelee.

I have more information on the family, can provide this for you if it is of assistance.

I just read a book called The Price paid for Charley by Earl Pilgrim. It is suppose to be a true story about Sir Wilfred Grenfell. In this book a family of Hancocks are mentioned. The community of Englee is frequently mentioned.

I live in Australia and am interested in following any contacts for my family tree.

My family story goes that George (Mauger) Major b abt 1836 of Petites Nl married Susannah Cook/e probably on the the south coast around 1857. as their first child was born in 1858.

I don't know if this info will help. But here's what I have
Gerald BUCKLE Sr b (?) died Nov 19 1966. He married Florence Mercer HEAD d/ of Moses HEAD and Lily MERCER. She was born May 20 1911 in Comfort Cove, and died May 16 2001 at St. Clre's Mercy Hospital. They had 9 children.
I don't know where Gerald was from nor when he was born.
