Hi. I know that there were more than one Smith branch in this area. Your William Smith might be from this other branch, as our branch comes down from John Smith. I was just contacted by another descendant of this other branch.

Give me your email and I can send you some records and possibly get you in touch with this other person too.

I too have a connection to Wm. Smith born about 1810 married Elizabeth Whittle. Their daughter Sarah born, May 1, 1838 was a gg grandmother. Sarah married Robert Joyce Sept. 14, 1859 and had three children with him, Wm., James (my g grandfather) and Sarah who married Wm. Clarke. My gg grandmother Sarah passed away at a young age and my gg grandfather went the West Coast.

To my knowledge Wm. and Elizabeth had at least 6 children. Sarah, Wm., Elizabeth, James, Martha and Charles. I have very limited info on the Smith family. Would appreciate any info you wish to share on this family.
My Dad would have probably known most of what your looking for but unfortunately he passed away almost 2 years ago. There is still 2 surviving daughters (aunts) of Gordon and Nada that I can get some information from and maybe some of my cousins. My Mother may also be able to help.
I have not researched my grandmother side yet so not sure where you are at this point but would love to help you anyway I can.

Hi there,

I looked at all the census records for the Marsh family in the US.
As Lilla M. Moulton, age 20 "niece" is listed from Canada, it would appear that yes, she would be a niece from Elizabeth's side. Either Elizabeth is a Moulton, OR a sister of hers married a Moulton,

I did see Lilla on passenger list intending to come to the states. She lists herself as a nurse. And that she is indeed from Newfoundland.

Also states on 2 of the census records that Elizabeth immigrated 1898 and other says 1902. 1930 Census tells us that they were married in 1903.

Sorry, but I do not have a birth year for Thomas Snow. His son Ernest Wellington Snow was born 1872 so I am guessing Thomas could be born 1830s or 1840s. I believe there was only one Thomas Snow living in the Burin area in that time period. His son Ernest W., and grandson Stanley were born and living at Great Burin. So we know there were at least three generations of Snow family members living in the Burin area. Ernest Wellington Snow and family, as well as his son Stan and family, both left in the early 1920s to work in Cape Breton.

In the Parish of Burin Methodist church death records, I could find only one Thomas Snow, and he died at sea, off Cape LaHune 04 Sept 1907. The record did not show Thomas's age but it said he was born Harbour Grace.

I then reviewed the Harbour Grace Baptisms between 1824 and 1851 and found only two Thomas Snow's. One born 1851 to a James and Julia, the other, named Thomas Nathaniel Snow, born 1830 to a William and Jane. I think it is unlikely to be the first Thomas as a birth year of 1851 seems a bit young to be moving away from Harbour Grace and starting a family in Burin. Also, Thomas Snow's wife, Augusta Gale Churchwill, was born apparently in 1844! Thus, it leaves only the Thomas Nathaniel Snow born to William and Jane as the apparent parents. A supporting piece of information is that I believe Ernest Wellington Snow had a brother named Nathaniel Snow b abt 1878.

Getting back to Harbour Grace, there was a William Snow b. 1790 married to a Jane Pippy b. 1799 from Harbour Grace. Any of this sound familiar, or connect, to any of your research?

Cheers,
Donald

A couple of questions.

Do you know anything about the Thomas Snow married to Augusta Gale Churchwill. I've been trying to find out where he's from but with limited success. I don't know Thomas's parents, or where he was born or died. There was one Thomas Snow in the Burin death record. He died at sea Off Cape LaHune 4 Dec 1907 and was born in Harbour Grace area.

And on the Darby side, my parents lived just outside of Sydney, C.B. in an area called Westmount. When they first went to Westmount they were friends of a Gordon and Etta Darby. Is he in your tree?

Augusta Churchwill was the sister of Laura Churchwill. She was born Augusta Gale Churchwill on May 29, 1844 and baptised in Burin on 19 September 1845. I have information on her parents and the rest of her siblings if you are interested. Laura Mary Churchwill was my great great grandmother as well!

to my knowledge there would not have been another J.Darby other than John Howard Darby that could be related to the Snow's.

My Dad and his family were from Whale Cove. My Great-grandfather was Lewis Rowe (b. Louis Roul in France). My father is 88 but he is very unwell right now. I don't know any Perrins/Perhams in my tree. I walked in to Whale Cove a few years ago on a visit to the district. If you would like to message me we could maybe exchange what information we ahve. I have some photos that show very small portions - just the family house.

My family (mom's side) are from Whale Cove - the Rowe/Hobbs family I have been looking for pictures as well with no luck. I have one of my grand-parent's house and one of my great-grand-parent's house as well but that doesn't show the community. I just have a picture of it at present - just a green harbour with sheep grazing. My mother is still living but does not remember the Perrin family - I think I did contact someone through Ancestry - and believe they moved to the mainland. June

Hi Karen.

I've been reading with enjoyment some of your posts on the folks from the Burin Peninsula. My mother-in-law was Catherine 'Kay (Snow) Boudreau. She was born in St. John's d/o Stan Snow, from Burin and gd/o of Ernest Wellington Snow, Burin, and Elizabeth 'Bessie' Taylor. Ernest's immigration papers to Nova Scotia said he had a cousin J. Darby in Sydney. I'm wondering what you might have on any of these families? And do you know if there was any other J. Darby, other than John Howard Darby, that was related to Ernest Snow and that went to Sydney? Cheers.
Donald, Halifax.

Not much doubt that would be my Great Grandfather ,John Howard Darby, born
at Great Burin 1864 and died at Sydney,NS 1939. Augusta Churchill or
Churhwill would have likely been related to my Great Great Grandmother Laura Mary
Churhwill or Churchill who was married to Married Samuel Alfred Darby

I know this is a dated reply but I'm hoping you're still following this thread. . .

My wife's great grandfather was Ernest Welington Snow 1872-1953 from Burin, NL, son of Thomas Snow and Augusta Churchill. Ernest went to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and on his immigration papers it shows that he first came to Cape Breton through N. Sydney in 1921. Immigration papers are dated Sept 1933 when he is age 50 years (therefore born around 1872/1873). Says he was born in Burin, Nfld, that he is a Methodist by religion, and he came to N.S. looking for work. On his immigration papers he also shows that has a cousin Mr. J. Darby living at 49 Prince Street, in Sydney, N.S.

Any idea who this J. Darby cousin would be to Ernest W. Snow??

Cheers,
Donald Fraser Ross
Halifax, N.S.
Based on the dates that conclusion would be correct; however, we are still talking about Olive Riggs, daughter of Clara (Farewell) Riggs, sister of Clarence Riggs and wife of Raymond White.
