Saw this posting about Joseph Edwin Smith. I believe you have found an incorrect death date for Joseph Edwin Smith. He did marry Hazel Oxner. He died in Halifax on April 8, 1982. This is his obit. I have info on the family for Joseph & Hazel.

I too have a connection to Wm. Smith born about 1810 married Elizabeth Whittle. Their daughter Sarah born, May 1, 1838 was a gg grandmother. Sarah married Robert Joyce Sept. 14, 1859 and had three children with him, Wm., James (my g grandfather) and Sarah who married Wm. Clarke. My gg grandmother Sarah passed away at a young age and my gg grandfather went the West Coast.

To my knowledge Wm. and Elizabeth had at least 6 children. Sarah, Wm., Elizabeth, James, Martha and Charles. I have very limited info on the Smith family. Would appreciate any info you wish to share on this family.

Hi. I know that there were more than one Smith branch in this area. Your William Smith might be from this other branch, as our branch comes down from John Smith. I was just contacted by another descendant of this other branch.

Give me your email and I can send you some records and possibly get you in touch with this other person too.

I'd love to have a copy of your information on this line of the family! I am related to both Philip and Thomas Smith and always thought that it was odd that there were no siblings between them. I was always told that they were the two brothers who came from England and settled in Brookside.

Hi

I would be interested in getting access to your public family tree as well. I am not currently registered on Ancestry.com or .ca. Silas Smith is my first cousin, three times removed. the connection is through his mother Anne Cheeseman. I have very little information on the Smith branch of my familytree and, maybe, could make some connections through your data.

Surnames: Sharpe, Whittle, Smith, Pelley, Flynn, Viguers, Dwyer, Spurrier, Prince William Henry
I came across a story used by Judge Prowse as part of a lecture he gave in 1878 which dates back to Oderin in 1786 which mentions a John and Joel Smith involving a case recorded in the Placentia Court Records for that year. I would think that this John Smith pre-dates the first John Smith mentioned in this thread.
Prowse's lecture was published and is available on line should you wish to see his story. The librarian at the Provincial Resource Library in St. John's sent me iPad versions of the pages involved. My translation (and possible errors) from those pages follows. Of interest, the presiding Judge was Prince William Henry, later to become King William IV who was visiting Placentia at the time.

Tuesday the 29th August 1786

His Royal Highness Prince William Henry etc. etc. etc.
The Humble Petition of Joseph Sharpe of Oderin Planter, very humbly Complaining, Herewith that on the 15th of November last, Samuel Whittle, son of James Whittle of the same Planter, together with one of said Whittles men, as also one of Petitioners men broke open said Petitioners store house, & thereof feloniously took a half a Barrel of Pork or thereabouts upon the discovery of which Petitioner examined his own said man, & having brought him before Mr. Spurriers Agent, he the said man, then & there owned and acknowledged the aforementioned fact, and even said when any of said Whittles family met said Petitioner, they abased him in a most and abusive manner, and further erected a gallows whereon to hang him, and besides James Whittle said he would in open Court, prove Petitioner to be a Robber of the dead in Consequence of the above affair. Also Whittle refuses to pay Petitioner a debt of some Twenty Pounds.
Joseph Sharp/Petitioner

Saturday the 2 September 1786

Evidence for Joseph Sharpe, William Pelley sworn deposed that Samuel Whittle & Joel Smith came to him and asked him if he had any meat, he said none but what was under Lock, on which they asked him if he had a Hatchet and on his saying he had they convinced him to bring it, and then went where the Store was, on while they broke the door open, and gave one Piece of Pork to a dog and carried away some more and then Returned the Piece of Meat they had given to the dog, he did not of his own accord tell his master, but his master noticed it, and then asked him what had become of it, he afterwards confessed it to his master, by the same Room and also declared it to the Agent of Mr. Spurrier of Oderin.
Joseph Sharpe says he did not see the gallows but was afraid of his life, even when he delivered his summons.
John Smith being sworn, deposes that he heard Whittle say if Sharpe had come into the Cove before, that he should not have come out again and heard his Wife say that she would make garters of Sharpe’s guts, he heard the boy confess the Store was broke open, and has since confessed it to Sharp himself, the boy told John Smith of it, and Smith told his master Sharpe. Mrs. Whittle told Smith on Thursday last was a wake, that Sharpe was an old Rogue and he would prove him so in open court.
Joseph Harding being sworn deposed that Whittle asked him how the Robber of the Dead was.
Whittle being put on his defense says that his son & servant, had no occasion to take it having had Plenty in the boat.
Joseph Sharpe swore the Peace against Whittle, his wife, and his eldest son – Philip Dwyer, Jeffrey Flynn and John Viguers was bound for Whittle twenty pounds each.
Jeffery Flynn and Robert Viguers was bound for Whittle’s eldest son £10 Each.
James Whittle was ordered to ask Sharpe’s Pardon, or otherwise to pay a fine of £5.0.0 which Patrick Dwyer agreed to pay Whittle objecting to ask Sharpe’s pardon.

It was ordered that Samuel Whittle should receive 12 lashes and Joel Smith 18 lashes for breaking open the store of Joseph Sharpe, Joel Smith Received his Punishment at the usual place on ___.
In consideration of the youth of Samuel Whittle he was forgiven and Reprimanded.
Notice was given in Court that Divine Service would be held tomorrow at 12 o’clock.
No complaints being presented the Court adjourned until next Monday.
