"How to find a widowed parent listed in a census."

A few days ago I found a marriage for Ira Davis b.1881 and Elizabeth Kelloway b.1884 who married in 1905

but yesterday when I found the census for 1935

http://ngb.chebucto.org/C1935/35-valleyfield-bon.shtml

Ira was listed with a Mary b. 1880 along with a Stepson William J. Butt. On the 1945 census Mary and William are listed as Stepmother and Stepbrother and living with Albert Davis.

Who was Mary? There was a Stephen Butt who married Mary Stratton in 1900. Mary is listed as being from Valleyfield and 20 and Stephen is listed as being 29 and a resident of Flat Island.

So now from the 1935 census if Elizabeth and Ira's daughter Muriel is born in 1919 and Stephen and Mary's son is born in 1919 that tells me that Stephen and Elizabeth died sometime between 1919 and 1935. Looking through the 1927 death records I found Elizabeth on page 268 and Stephen on page 275 listed as 43 and 55 which also matched their ages.

...and that my friends is how you find who Mary was! It's great when you can find the files but not so easy when you can't.
