Abbott and Fifield from Bonavista

Paul,

I show a Stephen of roughly that vintage as a brother to Hugh (1750). I am checking provenance because, as you rightly point out there are many false starts.

So the provenance is not strong. Hugh Senior would have been born in Dorset area in 1726 and died in Bonavista in 1786. And I have his wife as Ann, so likely not a good fit.

Not sure that helps you at all.

Paul,

I am currently at work and won't be home until the end of the month, so I will look up the information on where I got Hall, or think I have Hall, for the maiden name of Margaret, the wife of George Ivany when I get home.

Likewise, I will have to look at my records for Stephen, of Stephen and Sarah, for how I got his parents. Not sure if my database has it or not...I do remember though, that I have his father as Stephen Abbott who married Ann Valens (Not 100% sure if I have her maiden name right). Then this Stephen I would have as Hugh Abbott and Elizabeth Newell's son....but I will get back to you on how I came up with that when I get home at the end of the month...

Hubert

Surnames: Abbotts of Bonavista, British Harbour, and Trinity
Hi Everyone. Well, I have discovered I have five different Abbott ancestors in my family tree. Maybe someone can help me to figure out who their parents and siblins are.
Here goes:
1) Alfred John Abbott married Ibena Butler of Red Point, Bonavista on Feb 24, 1932.
He passed sometime before Dec 1934 as Ibena than married Joseph Lander on Dec 1, 1934.

2) Philip Abbott married Catherine Butler on May 14, 1854 in Bonavista. She is the daughter of William Butler and Jane ?

3) Ann Abbott married John Butler on Dec 11, 1864 in Bonavista. He is the son of Willaim Butler and Jane ?

4) James Abbott married Margaret Butler on Nov 19, 1840 in Bonavista. She is the daughter of William Butler and Jane ? (Maybe someone will know who this Jane is that married William Butler)

5) Mary Abbott of British Harbour married Augustus Tibbs on Dec 29, 1892 in Trinity, TB. I think she may be the daughter of James Abbott and Joan/Jean Ivamy of British Harbour.

As you can see, I have several Abbotts in my family line and having a great deal of difficulty in finding out any other information.

Can you help? Please send email to wandainkamloops@yahoo.ca Thanks

Paul,
I don't know if I ever got back to you on Margaret the wife of George Ivany. I remember that I told you that I had found out that she was a Hall....but, when I checked my sources I was 100 years or so out on that one...I don't know how I didn't catch it when I put it in there, actually Hall belonged to another Margaret in my tree, 100 years later...anyway thanks for asking me where I got it or I may never have caught it. Now, after saying that, I have no proof, but I do believe that Margaret Ivany's maiden name may be Sweet??. I am thinking that because I have seen others give a second name to one of their children and it happens to be the mother's maiden name...so, I can't say for certain that she was a Sweet, but she did name a son William Sweet Ivany who was baptized Nov 30, 1770.
As for the Stephen Abbott's.
Stephen Abbott married Martha Ivany Dec 28, 1802, this Stephen Abbott was baptized in Harbour Grace Sept 10, 1781 (record states he was born in Bonavista) and his parents are Stephen and Ann Abbott of Bonavista. Newfoundland, Vital Statistics, 1753-1893 Harbour Grace Harbour Grace (Church of England) Birth 1775-1807, Vol. 110 Image 17 of 97. This Stephen Abbott also had a Will April 26, 1850 Bealey's Cove, most probably Bayley's Cove. Will of Stephen Abbott from Newfoundland will books volume 3 page 55 probate year 1866.
Next Generation:
Stephen Abbott married Sarah (unknown) about 1780. This Stephen Abbott was born about 1745 in Bonavista because he died in Bonavista in 1801 at the age of 46. This Stephen Abbott was the son of Stephen Abbott and Ann Valens. I will have to get my old computer to boot up to find how I came up with that...but I seem to recall that one was referred to as Jr. or Sr. or both because they were listed on the same document....I think it has something to do with some petition to the government for help for the poor or some other document sorta like that. I wish I had put it in with my documents for Stephen Abbott....I will as soon as I am able to get my old computer to boot up again.
Next Genertion:
Stephen Abbott married Ann Valens (I will have to boot my old computer to find out how I came up with Valens for her surname). This Stephen Abbott was born about 1820 and died - I have about 1802, and usually when I put about 1802 I had a reason, most likely a burial date instead but didn't know how to put it in since I was new to ancestry and it's been left because I haven't gone back - but I will let you know if I can get a boot disk to get my old computer booted up.
Next Generation
Hugh Abbott married Elizabeth Newell. I am not sure how I got Stephen Abbott as their child unless it had to do with the court case, etc., that Elizabeth (Newell) Abbott launched claiming that her son was the rightful heir to property left by her father or grandfather, I don't remember off the top of my head which owned the property. Hugh Abbott was born circa 1690 in Bonavista and Elizabeth Newell was born between 1690-1700.
Next Generation
John Abbott and his wife (her name was illegible on something) were both born about 1665 and died in Bonavista. I don't know when he died, but his wife was buried in 1709. There is a document that says "Wife of John Abbott, buried 1709". I can't hazard a guess as to how I got John and his wife to be the parents of Hugh.
James Newell born about 1670 in Bonavista....most, if not all, this Newell information comes from Elizabeth's court case.
Next Generation
Thomas Newell born about 1645 and died June 30, 1724 Trinity, Trinity Bay (Story of Trinity - Book by Gordon Hancock).
Next Generation
Thomas Newell born about 1620.

Those names don't sound familiar to me, however, have you checked out one of the first posts I made in this thread where I posted my database of Abbotts I've found in the Bonavista-Trinity areas? I listed everyone I came across with the baptism and/or birthdate, marriages, religious denomination, and I tried to group them according to their parents where possible. You may find the names you are looking for there. They just don't sound familiar to me because they are not of my direct line and that was all I was interested in at the time...and for now...I have too much work to do on other lnes right now...lol.

Paul,

You are going to laugh when I tell you this, but I was trying to explain that Margaret Ivany's maiden name wasn't Hall to you the other day. You looked at me kind of weird and I was taken aback because I've known you and your family my whole life....anyway, I had to explain myself to you and that's when I found out you are a different Paul Goodyear...lol. I thought I've been chatting with him all this time...lol. But, it really doesn't matter because helping each other is the main thing....just good to know now that you are you and not him...lol.

Paul, I too am related to James and Joanna Ivany/Ivamy via Elizabeth I believe. I have been trying to track Mary Abbott who married Augustus Tibbs. These two are my great(x) grandparents. I would love for you to contact me at wandainkamloops@yahoo.ca.
Thanks,
Wanda

I have a correction to make. James Ivany of English Harbour married Joan Pottle and James Ivany of Old Bonaventure married Joan Abbott. So, I have had to make a change in my tree to reflect that I am now connected to Joan Pottle and not Joan Abbott.
