Thank you Thomas for your reply. I had a James Hawkes in my tree who had married Sarah Jane, but thanks to your research I'm quite positive that it isn't my James as he was not Irish. Now I am in contact with someone of the "Irish Hawkes" family and I think I know where he fit in.

JAMES HAWKS (HAWKES) b. ca. 1855, m. SARAH ANN DEAN (b. 1855), d/o James and Jane Dean.
One thing about the surname, Hawkes, is that there was a family in Queens Co., NB who used Hawkes/Hawkshurst interchangeably. For example, in 1871, there was in Douglas Parish, York Co., NB a James E. Hawks b. ca. 1863 son of Joseph (ca. 1839) and Ann (ca. 1835) Hawks. This seems the right family but wrong date-of-birth. Meanwhile in Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB there was James 'Hawxhurst' (ca. 1861), s/o Jotham (ca. 1829) and Catharine (ca. 1840) Hawkshurst.
The most likely, in 1871, was James Hawks (ca. 1863), s/o in Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB. William (ca. 1811) and Matilda (ca. 1821) Hawks with both parents b. in Ireland.
I rather think that James may have been the widower, James William Hawke [sic], of Eel River Lake, North Lake Parish, York Co., NB b. Albert Co., NB 12SEP1853, d. Eel River Lake 10FEB1933 age 80 years and 5 months. He was the son of John Hawkes (b. Ireland) and of Hannah Hayward (b. Albert Co., NB). This according to Charles Hawkes of Canterbury Station his son. Charles is likely Charles H. Hawkes (1892-1962). When he married, Charles was b. ca. 1893. In 1901 Charles Hawks (6SEP1892) was the s/o James (10NOV1853) and Sarah A. (19MAY1854) Hawks in North Lake Parish so James William Hawkes appears to be the person you seek. Birth-dates in 1901 are, at best, suspect so I would think the birth-date in his registration of death (12SEP1853) was the most reliable.
In 1851 there were a number of Hawk's/Hawks' in Albert Co. including several John's. There were Hayward's in Elgin Parish, Albert Co., NB. Most of the Hawk's/Hawks' appear to have been in Hopewell Parish and I see none that might be Irish.

Thomas.

Re: James Doak (1872-1947) Fredericton

WILLIAM DOAK b. Ireland ca. 1844-5, d. Brunswick St. Fredericton, York Co., NB 16MAY1895 age 51 years, buried Rural Cemetery, Fredericton, York Co., NB, m. St. Paul's Manse (Fredericton?) 17DEC1866 MARGARET MacNABB (b. NB 14DEC1846 (ca. 1847-9), d. 18MAY1821, buried Rural Cemetery, Fredericton, York Co., NB), d/o Patrick and Ann (Sutherland) MacNabb.
There are some peculiarities about this family. One is that they seem not to be associated with the Doak's of Doaktown, which is a bit of a surprise. On the other hand, William's daughter, Kate, when married, is given as b. 'Doak Settlement'.
James 'Alan' Doak's death registration states that his parents were born in Scotland and that he was 'Scotch' but the 1881 census of Kings Ward, Fredericton, York Co., NB states that William Doak was b. Ireland and his wife, Margaret, was b. NB as were the children, Kate, Agnes, James and 'Alison'. Next door is 1881 was a family headed by a widow, Margaret Doak (44), b. Ireland, with children: Margaret (18), Isabella (16) and Annie (12). I would guess that this Margaret was William's sister-in-law.
William (46) and Margaret (44) Doak are in Wellington Ward, Fredericton in 1891. William and his parents were b. Ireland and Margaret and her parents were b. NB. Their son, James, was already a printer at the age of 18.
Most of the family was in Queens Ward, Fredericton in 1901. William had died by then.
Even by 1851 the Doak's were numerous especially in Blissfield Parish, Northumberland Co., NB. A genealogical web site at:
http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/d/e/m/Anne-Demarc...
tells of William's origins.

When William and Margaret married he was living in Fredericton and she in the Nashwaak River (Devon) area. This means that Margaret, in 1851, was likely in St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB. There was a large, single family of McNabb's there in 1851 including Margaret McNabb (5), d/o Patrick (39) and Ann (36) McNabb. The NBGS site at:
http://nbgs.automatedgenealogy.com/firstfamilies/FAMILY-McA-...
has:

MACNABB: James MacNabb b. - , d. before 1822: served in 42nd Highland Regiment: came to NB in 1783 and settled on the Nashwaak River in Saint Marys Parish, York County: m. c1801 Agnes Ross b. c1779 d/o Donald Ross of the 42nd:
Children are listed in an estimated order:
1) Alexander MacNabb b. 1802, m. 3 Aug 1822 Elizabeth MacKenzie b. 1797: had six children:
2) Catherine MacNabb b. - , died 12 Aug 1831, m. 21 Nov 1820 Alexander MacLaggan b. 1793, d. 21 Apr 1871, s/o Peter MacLaggan and Margaret MacIntosh: had four children:
3) Margaret MacNabb m. Samuel Casey:
4) Elizabeth MacNabb:
5) Mary Ann MacNabb:
6) Janet MacNabb born 1809, married (1st) Donald MacKenzie born in 1781, d. 1847: they had nine children: m. (2nd) 9 Nov 1848 her brother-in-law, James MacKenzie b. 1787: m. (3rd) James Manzer b. 1796, died 1867:
7) Patrick MacNabb b. 1811, d. 13 Feb 1906, married Ann Sutherland born 1815, died 1902: had sixteen children:
8) possibly, Barbara MacNabb b. 1819, married Thomas Wilson s/o John Wilson: had seven children.
Source: MC80/1214 Ina MacLaggan et. al. Nashwaak families 1785-1885, pages 83- 84: see also MC315 Nashwaak Bicentennial Association fonds, MS13/4 McNabb 1781-1967, 14 pages.

That they were descend from a member of the Black Watch in the American Revolution suggests they lived in the vicinity of Taymouth.
Doak Settlement appears to have been on the River Saint John and not the same as Doaktown. It was named after William as an obituary in the 17MAY1895 edition of the Fredericton, "The Gleaner" has it:

"William Doak died at his home on Brunswick Street last night aged 51 years. Mr. Doak was a resident of Doak Settlement, a place a few miles below town, for a great many years. In fact it was his family that it derived the name of Doak Settlement. A few years ago he moved to town and has ever since been employed with R.A. Estey. About six weeks ago Bright's disease began to manifest itself forcibly in his system, compelling him to cease work. He was able, however, to quietly stroll about the garden and about the streets until last Friday eve. When he was prostrated with a severe headache. Monday and Tuesday of the following week he rallied considerably and continued to improve until Wednesday eve. He was conversing happily with his family that eve. when he fell into an unconscious stupor from which he never recovered and last eve. death ended his sufferings. A wife, four boys and five girls, four of them small children, are left to mourn. Deceased was an active member of the Orange association in this city and the members of that society will attend the funeral in a body at 3:30 Sunday afternoon. Undertakers Adams and Price will have charge of the arrangements."

The location is just a bit back from the river, below the University of New Brunswick, near the boundary with Lincoln Parish, Sunbury Co., NB. It is on Doak Road north of the Trans Canada Highway.
William (27) was with his widower father, John Doak (63) in Fredericton in 1871. William's wife is given as Mary (20), but is almost certainly Margaret. There is a brother, John (120 and William and Margaret's children, Catherine (3) and Agnes (JUN1870).
Children:
1. KATHERINE (KATE) ALLISON DOAK b. Doak Settlement, York Co., NB ca. 1868-70, m. 18JUL1894 ARTHUR FREDERICK BENNETT (b. Stanley Parish, York Co., NB ca. 1872), s/o Robert and Grace Bennett.
2. AGNES ALBERTA DOAK b. Fredericton, York Co., NB 4JUN1870 (ca. 1870-2, 4JUN1872 in 1901), m. York Co., NB 24MAY1905 GEORGE NELSON BREEN (b. Moss Glen, Kingston Parish, Kings Co., NB ca. 1872; m. 1st _____), s/o James and Matilda R. Breen.
3. JAMES ALLAN (ALAN) DOAK b. Fredericton, York Co., NB 4APR1873 (ca. 1873), d. 168 Brunswick St., Fredericton, York Co., NB 6JUN1947 age 74 years, 2 months and 2 days, buried Fort William (Thunder Bay), Ontario, m. 1st Kings St., Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 28JUL1896 CARRIE H. BLAIR (b. Fredericton, York Co., NB ca. 1875), d/o Henry and Mary Blair; m. 2nd United Church of Canada, 469 King St., Fredericton, York Co., NB 8AUG1942 ANNA (ANNIE) JOHNSTON BLAIR (b. Fredericton, York Co., NB 15DEC1878 (ca. 1879), d. Victoria Public Hospital, Fredericton, York Co., NB 20FEB1962 age 83 years, 2 months and 5 days, buried Rural Cemetery, Fredericton, York Co., NB), d/o Henry F. and Mary Elizabeth (Robinson) Blair.
The information on James' death registration was given by his wife, Anna J. Blair Doak, and the Scottish origins indicated may not be accurate. James was a retired printer; having retired in 1942, and had been living in Fredericton for 4½ years. If he worked for the 'Gleaner' it was for a short period. He probably married Anna shortly after his return. On the registration of his marriage to Anna he stated that his father was born in Ireland and that he was a retired printer. Anna was a retired nurse and after the marriage they lived at her residence at 168 Brunswick St. It appears that she and Carrie were sisters.
Anna J. Blair may have been connected to the Carrie H. Blair who, with James A. Doak, had a son, Kenneth J. Doak b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 13OCT1896. There were several other children whom I will assume, for now, were his. James A. was a printer when Walter was born. When he married Carrie he was the s/o William and Margaret Doak and b. ca. 1873 so it seems the same person.
I do not find James in the 1901 census.
'The Gleaner', dated 4AUG1896, had an article:

"Word has been received of the marriage of two Frederictonians in St. John Tuesday last. The principals were James Doak s/o Mrs. Wm Doak, this city and Miss Carrie Blair d/o Henry Blair, the former owner of the King street sash and door factory. Mr. Doak is now working in Sackville (West. Co.) where he and his bride will settle down as soon as details, such as house furnishings, etc., is completed. The groom worked in the printing trade in this city for a number of years. He is now employed in Sackville as a harness maker at a good salary."

The Sackville Harness Shop was, at one time, well-known world-wide in certain circles. It was created in 1919. See:
http://www.sackvilleharness.com/
Even so, I cannot help but feel that the enterprise with which James was associated in 1896 was a precursor of the present-day craft.
Children:
31. KENNETH J. DOAK b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 13OCT1896.
32. VIVIAN MARGARET (MARGUERITE) DOAK b. Fredericton, York Co., NB 19MAR1898.
33. WALTER McNABB DOAK b. Hampton Parish, Kings Co., NB 6MAR1900.
4. ALLISON DOAK b. 15APR1875 (ca. 1875).
it would appear that Allison and Katherine Allison were the same person except that in 1881 Kate and 'Alison' are listed separately. Also, in 1891, Allison (a son) is listed separately from Kate. He was a dry goods clerk.
5. GERTRUDE DOAK b. 8JUN1881 (ca. 1882).
6. Cpl. WILLIAM ANDREW DOAK b. 4AUG1883 (ca. 1884), d. Tree River, Arctic Circle, Northwest Territories 1APR1922, buried Tree River, Arctic Circle, Northwest Territories.
William served with the RCMP and he was murdered by an escaped prisoner. See:
http://www.rcmpgraves.com/buffalo/mysteryofmrbinder.html
This gives him as b. Calgary, which is unlikely. He enlisted in Calgary as a trumpeter 2JUN1905.
7. PERCY DOAK (twin) b. 9MAR1888 (ca. 1888).
William served with the RCMP.
8. WINIFRED DOAK (twin) b. 9MAR1888 (ca. 1888).
9. HAZEL DOAK b. 11FEB1881.

Thomas.

Beth:

That's an interesting take on the rumors,I couldn't find anything about John or Susannah in my research, even in the Provincial Archives. If they had returned to Canada and died here there should at least have been something there.

According to what I had heard,Ruth was a Maliseet princess. Her father William was born in England and came to Canada with his parents. I have a photo of Ruth and her husband John if you'd like to see it.

I am a decendant of George Gilbert Collicott, a brother of Ruth Susanna Collicott. I read the discussion you have posted on this forum and thought I might tell you about a rumor from my great-grandmother who was George Gilbert's grand-daughter and therefore Ruth Collicott's grand niece.

"Granny" said that a family member of hers had come to New Brunswick, met and married a first nations "Princess" of MikMaq origin, and further returned to Britain with said wife to show off her extra-ordinary beauty. I was assuming this was the wife of John Collicott named Susanna but have not found any definite proof as to which woman this might have been about.

The story goes that the couple later returned to New Brunswick again and lived out their lives in probably York County.

"Granny's" story though contradicts the adoption story you have heard about Ruth.

Hi, I read your and KKmary's posting about John Kennedy. He too is my great-great-great grandfather! He was a British navy sea captain born in Covent Garden, London, England. He died in Canada. Three children. Ann 1785-1879, John Blaine 1788-1811, and Joseph ?-? married Nov 1818. I have John Blaine Kenndy's 12 children's names. Two photos of William Kenndy 1822-1905 and Theodora "Nancy" Kenndy 1824-1867 parent of Cecelia Jackson who married Henry Jackson 1846-1912. I would be happy to give you more information and photo of Willaim Kennedy by e-mail. Russell

Thomas and Prudence (Wheeler) Dunphy, Kingsclear Parish 1851

Much of the 1851 census of Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB was destroyed by water but with some effort parts are retrievable. The online transcription, particularly at:

http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/View.jsp?id=6713

no longer appears to accept suggestions for corrections so, having no other place, I will post a bit of a suggested correction for lines 19-25 here. The objective of the excercise was to find the parents of Charles and Hannah 'Easty'.

Thomas.

The 1851 census of Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB has a family transcribed as:

?	? M	Head	48	Native	Farmer	Birth
?	? F	Wife 48	Native Birth
?	? F	Daughter	23	Native Birth
?	Jackson	M	Son 16	Native Birth
?	Evellina	F	Daughter	14	Native Birth
Easty Charles	M	Lodger	3	Native Birth
Easty Hannah	F	Lodger	2	Native Birth

This census was heavily damaged by water, hence the missing elements. 'Evellina' b. ca. 1837 might be Evelina Campbell (b. ca. 1831) in the 1871 census of Kingsclear Parish, wife of John Campbell (ca. 1836). A daughter, Ida (ca. 1863) appears to have bee Ida Estella Campbell (b. Springhill, Kingsclear Parish), d/o John A. Campbell, who m. 1891 Elias Wetmore Henry. John Campbell, Jr. (b. Kingsclear Parish ca. 1865), m. 1894 Matilda Scott. Christina Campbell (b. Springhill ca. 1867, d/o John A. and Evelina) m. 1888 Albert E. Everett. Christina Everett d. in 1914. John A. Campbell m. OCT1861 Evelina B. Dunphy, d/o Thomas Dunphy of Kingsclear. So we now kno the lost surname and have:

Dunphy Thomas	M	Head	48	Native	Farmer	Birth
Dunphy Prudence	F	Wife 48	Native Birth
Dunphy	? F	Daughter	23	Native Birth
Dunphy Jackson M	Son 16	Native Birth
Dunphy Evellina	F	Daughter	14	Native Birth
Easty Charles M	Lodger	3	Native Birth
Easty Hannah F	Lodger	2	Native Birth

Thomas Dunphy m. Kingsclear Parish ca. MAR1821 Prudence Wheeler, eldest d/o Edward Wheeler of St. Mary's Parish, York Co., NB. In Thomas Dunphy's home, in Kingsclear Parish, Wm. S. Everett m. 3JUN1879 Priscilla A. Estey, both of Kingsclear Parish. Thomas Dunphy d. at the home of John A. Campbell, Kingsclear Parish 8MAY1881 age 83. He was likely a bit younger than 83 as, in 1871, both he and Prudence were age 72. Albert Everett (8), s/o Benjamin and Julia Ann Everett, lived nearby. He would later marry Christina Dunphy. With Thomas and Prudence, in 1871, lived Priscilla Esty (45), a widow, with children Charles (23) and Elizabeth (22). These would be the Charles and Hannah in 1851. Next door was Jedson Dunphy (37) and family. Jedson (Judson?) would be the 'Jackson' in 1851. Was Priscilla Esty the unknown daughter in 1851? On the other side of the family from Jedson was W. Shephard Everett (41), with a wife, Eliza Jane (Kilburn, 36) who apparently would soon die and Priscilla would marry the widower. By 1881, Shepherd (52) and 'Percilla' (57) are in Kingsclear Parish. At:
http://www.longislandsurnames.com/genealogy/getperson.php?pe...
Priscilla's maiden name is Dunphy, so I assume that she was the unknown daughter.
Another son may have been Joseph T. Dunphy who m. 11NOV1858 Ruth W. Wheeler, both of Kingsclear Parish, where the witnesses were John A. Campbell and Evelina Dunphy. This is also suggested at:
http://histfam.familysearch.org/getperson.php?personID=I1405...
So far this gives:

Dunphy Thomas	M	Head	48	Native	Farmer	Birth
Dunphy Prudence	F	Wife 48	Native Birth
Estey? Priscilla F	Daughter	23	Native Birth
Dunphy Judson M	Son 16	Native Birth
Dunphy Evellina	F	Daughter	14	Native Birth
Easty Charles M	Lodger	3	Native Birth
Easty Hannah F	Lodger	2	Native Birth

William Shepherd Everett, by the way, was the s/o Joel and Mary Brown (Estey) Everett.
At:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/estey/messages/130.html
a portion is:
4 Thomas Endicott Estey b. 03 NOV 1821 New Brunswick.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . + Priscilla Dunphy 13 NOV 1845 New Brunswick.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5 Charles Estey b. 08 MAR 1848 New Brunswick.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . + Elizabeth
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Francis Estey b. 07 JUL 1878 New Brunswick.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Harold Estey b. 27 FEB 1882 New Brunswick.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 Edith Estey b. New Brunswick, d. APR 1896 Kingsclear, York, New Brunswick.

Where Thomas Endicott Estey is a s/o Endicott (9DEC1777) and Hannah (Churchill) Estey. It should be noted, however, that the same compilation has Hannah Churchill married to her son, William Beverely Estey. Endicott Estey d. Kingsclear Parish 8AUG1848 age 71 years. William Beverely Estey, and his wife, the other Hannah Churchill, apparently are also in Kingsclear Parish in 1851 as:

Easty William	M	Head	64	Native	Farmer	Birth
Easty Hannah	F	Wife 54	Native Birth
Easty Mary	F	Daughter	18	Native Birth
Easty Abel	M	Head	38	Native	Farmer	Birth
Easty Jane	F	Wife 34	Native Birth
Easty William	M	Son 7	Native Birth

http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/View.jsp?id=6713

Hey Thomas :)

Wow this is a lot of info! Thank you so much for all your time spent. I spoke with a lady from our provincial archives library and unfortunately it wasn't mandatory to participate in the census record so it kinda looks like my great great grandfather didn't.
I've skimmed through most of what you sent and I will look into some of the names.
Laura Mae Ross and Arthur Henry Easty were my great Grammie and Grampie and they did have a son John Chester Estey. John was my great uncle. So its the right line, its just so tricky to follow cause the name was changed up so many times. I am definitely using all this information you sent as a guide. Again thank you so much. Have a great night!

It appears as if Arthur Essensa and Arthur Henry Estey are the same person. I cannot find anything too conclusive on his parents but I will give you the complete notes from my search as they will at least show how I get to a certain point. It at least explains how Arthur's father was David (Essensa) and Richard (Estey).

Thomas.

In 1888, Henry Essensa of Smithfield had a wife, Katherine Murphy. A birth record of their son, Harry Joseph, states that Henry was b. in Smithfield. Henry Essensa b. ca. 1848, d. Newmarket, Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB 20MAY1913 age 65 years. A death record suggests he was b. Newmarket, York Co., NB.

A David and Alida Essensa had a daughter, Annie A. Essensa, who was b. Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB ca. 1876 and m. 3JUL1901 Joseph Henry.
Alida B. Essensa, b. Washington (County?), Maine 21OCT1856, wife of David A. Essensa, d. Harvey Station, Manner Sutton Parish, York Co., NB 25DEC1934. She was the d/o William and Eunice (Grinnell) Legh?. She was survived by her husband. David A. Essensa b. York Co., NB 22FEB1849, d. Harvey Station, Manner Sutton Parish, York Co., NB 31AUG1941. He was the s/o Gardiner Essensa (b. Maine) and of Ellen Hunter.
In Kingslear Parish, York Co., NB in 1901, David (22FEB1849) and Alida (21OCT1856) Essensa. They lived next to his parents, Gardener and Ellen Essensa. They have four daughters with them.

Gardiner Essensa d. Acton, York Co., NB 31JAN1907 age 82 years.
In Kingsclear Parish in 1901 is the family of Gardener Essensa (16APR1824). His wife Ellen (10APR1821) and he have a daughter, Alice (31OCT1881).

In Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB, in the 1901 census, David Essensa (31JAN1842) had a wife, Elizabeth A. (17AUG1853) and two adopted children, Annie A. Kingston (29OCT1896) and Arthur Essensa (10JUL1883). Next door lived the family of Henry (22MAY1848) and Catherine (29JAN1852) Essensa. Catherine and Henry have, amongst their children, Harry (28MAY1888). The next family is that of James Essensa (4MAR1852) who has in his household Nancy A. Essensa (2FEB1810) a widow.
David Essency b. ca. 1837, d. Newmarket, NB 22APR1925 age 88 years. His wife was Lizzie. He was the s/o Daniel and Nancy (Gallagher) Essency. Daniel, in Kingsclear Parish in 1851, was David Essency. His family is listed as:

Essency David M	Husband	52	American	Farmer 1823
Essency Nancy F	Wife 31	Irish Dec 1837
Essency John H M	Son 17	Native Birth
Essency Elen Ann	F	Daughter	12	Native Birth
Essency Margaret	F	Daughter	10	Native Birth
Essency David M	Son 9	Native Birth
Essency Charles	M	Son 7	Native Birth
Essency Rheubin	M	Son 5	Native Birth
Essency Henry M	Son 3	Native Birth
Essency *eninsa	F	Daughter	1	Native Birth

Next door was the family of likely a son, 'Frederic' Essency (26), with a wife, 'Elenor' (29) and children David (2) and Samuel (1). I rather feel that 'Frederic' and 'Elenor' may be the same later known as Gardener and Ellen. Examination of an image of the original gives them as Gardiner and Elinor. Nancy (b. ca. 1820) is likely the Nancy A. b. 2FEB1810 in 1901. This latter date is more likely as Gardiner b. 1824 is not likely the s/o Nancy b. ca. 1820. On the other hand, at:
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&d...
Gardner Essensa was a son by a previous marriage.
In 1871, in Kingsclear Parish, they are David (73) and Nancy (55) 'Eseency' with children: Michael (14), 'Unice' (19), James (18) and Henry (23).

ESSENSA: David Essensa born 23 Nov 1799 in Union, ME, d. 10 Jun 1872 in Kingsclear Parish, York County, s/o Henry Essensa and Susanna Rolfe: m. Newmarket, NB 22APR1925 age 88 years, m. Elizabeth A. McGrath (b. 17AUG1853) and their adopted son, Arthur Essensa (b. 10JUL1883) are the family that you seek then Arthur H. Essensa (7), in Kingsclear Parish, in 1891, is the 'A. S.' of David (48) and Elizabeth (38) Essensa. A birth record suggests that he m. _____ Ross and had a son in Smithfield, York Co., NB 31JUL1917. In 1911 Arthur (JUL1884) is unmarried, living with his adoptive parents and 'Arletta' Kingston (OCT1896).
Arthur H. Easty b. Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB ca. 1885, m. York Co., NB 26AUG1911 Laura M. Ross (b. Kingsclear Parish, York Co., NB ca. 1883), d/o Donald and Sarah Ross. The interesting thing is that Arthur named his parents, when he married, as Richard and Lizzie Easty. Another birth record makes John Chester Estey b. Harvey, York Co., NB 31JUL1917 the s/o Arthur Henry and Laura May (Ross) Estey. John lived in Fredericton in 1976.
So far, it appears that Arthur Henry Estey b. 10JUL1883 was the s/o Richard and Lizzie Estey, his parents died before 1891 and he was raised by the Essensa's.
Presumably Richard Estey was living in 1881. There were several in NB in that census. One was Richard Estey age 21, living in Richmond Parish, Carleton Co., NB working as a farm labourer and apparently unmarried. Altogether there were:

Estey, Richard 7	New Brunswick	Victoria	Grand Falls
Estey, Richard 21	New Brunswick	Carleton	Richmond
Estey, Richard 70	New Brunswick	York	Fredericton - Kings Ward
Estey, Richard A.	33	New Brunswick	York	Fredericton - St Ann Ward
Esty, Richard 52	New Brunswick	York	St Marys
Esty, Richard 12	New Brunswick	York	St Marys

Richard A. (33) has a wife, Kate. Richard (70) has a wife, Nancy. Richard (52) has a wife, Theresa and a son, Henry (3). None of these appear likely. This is why I especially note the Richard (21). He may have been the Richard Estey (27) in Wicklow Parish, Carleton Co., NB in 1891 age 27 years, still single.
There was also a Richard Guilford Estey b. Williamstown, Carleton Co., NB 4DEC1860, s/o of Stephen A. and Elizabeth Jane (VanDine) Estey. The interesting thing is that Stephen is said to have been b. Kingsclear Parish 29DEC1822, d. 7APR1903. Richard, however, is said to have m. 'Hanna' Farley.
There were 'Easty' and 'Eastey' families in Kingsclear Parish in 1851 but Stephen appears to be the son of a widow, Nancy Esty, amongst a large element of the family in Wakefield Parish, Carleton Co., NB in that census; for example at:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/censusnb51/View.jsp?id=1746
In Wakefield Parish, in 1871, 'Steven Esty' (47) and Elizabeth (37) have a son, Richard G. (11). Unfortunately, in 1891, in Wicklow Parish, Carleton Co., NB, Stepehn Estey (67) has a son, Richard (27). Next door is the family of 'Hezekiah' and Isabel Farley whose daughter, Hannah (17) appears to be Richard's future wife. Also, Richard Gilford Estey b. 1860, d. 1927. His wife was Hannah Amelia Farley.
Hi, Lindsay.

I really could not find more. Partially this seems to be one of those families for whom little information is available in NB. This happens sometimes when the parents die early. Partially it seems that really pertinent records may be in Maine, particularly amongst the microfilms of vital statistics gathered from towns and at the state archives in Augusta. I do not have access to these.

The Estey's were a pre-Loyalist family who settled in Maugerville from New England about 1763. Even when the Loyalists arrived in 1783 they were likely a large family. I assume that, someplace, there is a genealogy of the family; perhaps at the Provincial Archives of New Brunswick in Fredericton. There are several entries at:
http://nbgs.automatedgenealogy.com/firstfamilies/FAMILY-E-20...
These mention, amongst other sources:

Wanda A. Rodney’s "The Esteys", 3 volumes.
Gladys G. Brawn’s "The Estey family".
John C. Hatt’s "A genealogical study of the Estey family of New Brunswick".
Willis A. Rickert’s "The Estey kindred."
'Generations' Vol. 18, No. 2 (Issue #68), Summer 1996: James F. Roome’s "Towne-Estey: New Brunswick connections", pages 3-8.

Apparently Daniel Estey was a member of the family and went to Northumberland Co. Several pre-Loyalists from Maugerville made that move and he may have been part of it. See also:

http://www.genealogy.com/users/e/s/t/Frank-C-Estey-Illinois/...

If you do find any information about Richard or Arthur Henry let me know.

Thomas.

Hi: I have a David Essensa (have also seen it spelled Estey and Essency) born 31 Jan 1842 in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia married to Elizabeth A. Unknown, born 17 Aug 1853. They had a son named Arthur Henry born 10 July 1883. David's brother Henry E. was married to my great grand aunt Catherine Murphy. They ended up in the Kingsclear, New Brunswick area. I'd be happy to share what I have. Please email me at juddcasper@earthlink.net and I'll send you some information.
Take care,
Pat (Foley) Casper

I think the answer to your question may be that Richard Estey was the son of Daniel and Bridget (Walsh) Estey. It appears that Daniel and Bridget died while the family was still relatively young and the family moved or was dispersed with some hint that many went to Maine. it may be in Maine that the answers lie. The following are some notes from my search. this was impeded by the large number of Richard's plus the variations in spelling the surname.

Thomas.

Arthur Henry Estey is given as b. Fredericton 1880 and d. 1967. His wife was Laura May Ross. Possibly this was the Arthur Estey b. 16JUL1886, s/o of a widow, Emma (Spurden?) Estey (b. 6JAN1861). Siblings were Herbert (16MAY1885) and Mira (28JUN1891). In 1891, Arthur (b. ca. 1887) was a s/o Henry (33) and Emma (30) Estey.

Arthur H. Estey b. Harvey, NB ca. 1884 went to Houlton, Maine 4FEB1814 naming his father as David Estey. This may be the crossing you mean. This could be Arthur Esty b. ca. 1883, living in Richmond Parish, Carleton Co., NB in 1891, with parents Sherman (45) and Frances (44) Esty. Siblings were Daisy (13) and Harry (10). The only David Estey in NB in 1891 was age 45, had no son, Arthur, nor a son b. ca. 1884. The closest Richard in 1891 was Richard 'Estry' b. ca. 1849 (Richard Allison Estey b. 6DEC1849) and his wife, Catherine b. ca. 1848 (Catherine MacKay) in Fredericton. They had no son, Arthur, nor a son of the right age.

The closest Richard Estey in 1851, in Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB is Richard Estey b. ca. 1835, s/o Bridget Estey (44). Bridget is indicated as married and b. Ireland, arriving in NB in 1823. other children are 'Danl' (20), Mary (18), John (15), Louisa (13), Thomas (10), Stephen (8), James (6), 'Michl' (4), 'Margt J' (2) and Ann (9).
In Northesk Parish, Northumberland Co., NB in 1871 there was a family, James Esty (b. NB ca. 1794) with a wife, Margaret (b. Ireland ca. 1807) and children: Margaret (37), Daniel (35), James (28), Richard (26), Robert (24), John (23), George (19), Ann (39), Bridget (18) and Jane (16). This seems to be the same family as in 1851. this would also appear to be Richard Estey b. ca. 1791, d. ca. 1875, s/o Daniel and Louisa (Crowe?) Estey who m. Margaret Walsh (b. Co. Cork, Ireland ca. 1806, d. 4JUL1875), d/o James and Ann (Martin) Walsh (Welch). James and Margaret are sid to have lived in Sevogle, NB and to have had 15 children. A problem is that Bridget, in 1851, is also given as Bridget Ward (ca. 1807) who m. James brother, Daniel Estey (ca. 1799-ca. 1849) and to have had 13 children. Going back to the 1851 cesnsu of Northesk Parish, there is the family of James 'Easty' (53) and Margaret (44), with children: Margaret (44), Daniel (15), Ann (12), James (11), Richard (9), Robert (7), John (5), Bridget (3) and George (1). So there are two Richard's"

Richard Estey b. ca. 1835, s/o Daniel and Bridget (Ward) Estey.
Richard Estey b. ca. 1842-5, s/o James and Margaret (Walsh) Estey.

The s/o James and Margaret is in Northumberland Co., NB in 1871. 'Ritchard' Estey (ca. 1843) also was in Northesk Parish in 1881, unmarried and living with his brother, George and family, and with brother James. James, Sr. (85) was next door. Daniel and 'Robart' 'Easty' lived in Southesk Parish next to each other. It would appear that the family of Daniel and Bridget (Ward) Estey left Northumberland Co. before 1871. Probably to Maine. For example, in 1860, a Thomas S. Esty b. ca. 1838 was in Houlton, Aroostook Co., ME.
There was a Richard Harold Estey who d. Newcastle Parish, Northumberland Co., NB 30MAY1957 but nothing seems to have been known of him. In 1911 he lived in Grainfield, Southesk Parish, Northumberland Co., was b. JUN1831, single and b. NB. He seems to be thought the s/o Daniel and Bridget (Ward) Estey and in 1851, was age 16 years. He is given as b. 19NOV1831 to Daniel and Bridget.
This rather leaves Richard b. ca. 1842-5, s/o James and Margaret (Walsh) Estey. At:
http://genforum.genealogy.com/cgi-bin/print.cgi?estey::130.h...
Richard was b. 19MAR1842.
I have been trying to find any information on my great grandfather DOB abt. 1844 Richard Easty or Estey I don't know anything about his wife only that she was called Lizzie maybe short for Elizabeth. I also know they had a son Arthur Henry but that's it. We know Nothing about this side of the family and its turned out to be quite the mystery, I later found a border crossing doc that showed Richard could have also gone by David.

Charles Henry Palmer

Charles Henry Palmer was the youngest of eleven children born to John Woolley Palmer & Lucy Palmer (nee Bennett) ~ he was born on 17th March 1893 in Barrow In Furness in Lancashire, England.
Many of male members of the family worked in the iron & steel industries in Barrow In Furness where ship building was prominent. John Woolley Palmer was sadly involved in an industrial accident which resulted in him having a leg amputated. Following his recovery, John & Lucy left England & moved to Ireland where they bought & ran a farm. Several of their grown up children moved to Ireland with them but Charles Henry Palmer chose to remain in England.
Charles Henry Palmer was known to have joined the Merchant Navy & during his travels he ended up staying in Ireland for short while staying with his family on the farm but soon returned to his beloved life at sea. It's thought that Charles started off his sea life career as a pantry boy progressing as a baker & eventually finishing up at the top of the ladder as a fully qualified chef.
Lucy Palmer (nee Bennett), mother of Charles, died in Ireland in 1936 at which time the family solicitor had to make contact with family members re. the will. The solicitor was told by the old family that Charles was thought to have then been living in either America or Canada. He was never traced & so he never did receive the money that was left to him & sadly the family never did ever find out what ever became of him. As it is thought that Charles could have settled in Canada I wondered if anyone might have Charles in their family tree from when he made a new life for himself. Should anyone know of Charles I would love to hear from you please as I would dearly like to know what became of Charles in his later years & learn of what he made of his life.
Thank you.
Hi one of my relatives was born in this place, I have found records of her Kathleen C Watts birth and her mother Minnie/Mary Watts, with some help.
The fathers name has not been omitted and the mother is still using her maiden name.
The god father to the child is the keeper of the house at the time and the mother stayed with them until they both left to come home to England 1890/1. We believe the father was Robert Scott and judging by the photo we have he may have belonged to the knights templer but the mother claimed he died before she left for England but she also told her family she was married but I can't find any evidence of his death or their marriage.

HiI'm looking for help to locate any records on this man.
I believe he was a lumberjack and died due to an accident in his work around 1888-1890
They lived in the News brunswick fredricton near an indian reserve and Roberts dad looked after sheep, maybe he was a farmer.
He had a child out of wedlock to possibly a girl a relative of mine called Minnie who was sent to Canada as a home child from Bristol,England. And she returned home to England about 1890/91 with her new baby.

This man is becoming very hard to find, I have searched records and I have found the daughter baptism record but the father is not named ant the baby and mother is still in the mother maidan name of watts.

My husbands grandfather was a Middlemore boy, sent over in 1905 on the SS. SIBERIAN. He was age 15. Mothers name was Polly and Fathers name was Henry Wharton (this is on James marriage cert.) I would love to be able to speak to either a family member of one of the children who came over in 1905 on the Siberian, they may know something of my husbands grandfather. As near as I can find out the children were sent over with a bible and a trunk.
His "adopted parents" were a Mr and Mrs Samuel Hoyt of Bright New Brunswick.
