British home child

Surnames: Watts and Scott
Hi I'm needing help, a relative of mine was a home child I believe a inmate as they called her in there. She was at the Royal Fort, St Michael's Hill in Bristol UK. We know she was sent to Canada, Fredericton,New Brunswick to work on a farm near a Indian reserve. The family surname was Scott. We think they were Pioneer farmers. We also know she had a baby and stayed in the Alms House there as an unmarried women and the Minster we believe paid her passage home. The child is my grandmother and we have never known her father and the circumstances surrounding her birth. I was hoping someone could shred some light on this.
I've spoke to Canada and they have given me limited information as that is all they have. My grandmother was baptised and the Alms House keeper AD Thomas and some one else were her godparents. The lady I'm looking for information about is my great grandmother Minnie Watts or she was known as Mary Watts. The child born in Canada was Kathleen Christina. Born 1888. My Grandmother always believed she was a Scott by surname but all searches come up with nothing. We believe the fathers name may have been Robert/Philip/ Arthur. The dates Winnie went Canada are 1881/2 and she returned between 1888-89 where her parents married her off very quickly back here. I have included a photo of the man we believe to be Kathleen Christine's father.
Please if any one can help as all searches have come up with nothing. I need to get this message to Canada also but don't know how.

Hi Karen,

I'd like to know if you have posted your query on the "British Home Child" Message Board and the Mailing List. There are many people there who can try to help. (And there is a BHC web site. And, there is a BHC Group at Facebook where people continue to join.)

If you have not posted a query too many times, it is more helpful if you add the .dates. in the first paragraph.

My 5 am eyes is trying to figure out the name of the BHC child arriving in 1881 or 1882, and it looks like she was Minnie or Mary WATTS.

There used to be at least 2 BHC data bases on-line where you could search for the child's name. Have you checked that you?

And, if she went to live with a SCOTT family in Fredericton, have you checked that 1881 census for that town?

Also, did both the mother and baby return to Bristol, England?

So, for the 1881 and 1901 census, researchers would only be searching for the SCOTT name?

Hi again,

I'm doing some quick searches for you. I'm seeing there were several woman, named Mary Minnie WATTS in England around the same time. But, while doing that, I noticed you did not mention the "age" of the child when she arrived in New Brunswick. .. Here is one record which sort of fits in what you stated: There is a lot more information now at www.familysearch.org

Name: Minnie Maria Watts
Event Type: Marriage
Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar
Registration Year: 1888
Registration District: Bristol
County: Gloucestershire
Event Place: Bristol, Gloucestershire, England
Volume: 6A
Page: 75
Line Number: 123

Minnie Maria Watts probably married one of the following people
Name: Sidney Alfred Skidmore
Name: Ann Pridham B Turner
Name: Albert Edward Veale

I just checked one of the BHC data bases, and I'm not finding a female child with the last name of WATTS or WATS in the data base.

I searched one of the BHC data bases, and there were 120 children with the surname, WATTS.

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigratio...;

None of the girls, named Mary, match up to your information.

This is one of the BHC web sites. I'll need to go find the more recent one for you.

P.S.

Alternate spelling in the data base was WATSON.

Hi again,

We're having a "snow day" so I'm going to try looking for information again. I just checked the 1881 Canada census, and, so far, I only find one person in Fredericton, York, N.B., with the surname, SCOTT. She is Miss Elizabeth SCOTT, 25, living in a hotel.

I just checked and there is a William SCOTT in 1901 in Fredericton, but he is only 35.
