I am looking for family or personal information on Lance Corporal William A. Gordon, died February 23, 1916 and buried in Shorncliffe Military Cemetery, Kent UK.

His attestation papers state that he was born in Marysville on October 21, 1895 but he and his family are listed in Stanley Parish in the 1911 census, probably living in Penniac. His mother was living in Penniac in his attestation papers. He was the son of Abner and Jennie Gordon and had a brother William.

I am researching the names on the WWI monument in Marysville (now part of Fredericton) and any information would be helpful.

Just noticed this, and I may not be the person that can give you much info. All I know is that William's father Abner was my great uncle, so William was my father's cousin; I can barely remember my great uncle and know only the bits that I have been told about William. Your post kind of threw me a bit because I was never told he had a brother ( also named William????) and My grand mother, Abner's sister, was also named Jennie.( I was never told the name of Abner's wife) My grandfather was Woodford Dunphy and he had a farm on the Manzer road in Penniac (that is where Abner died; I remember him in his sick bed) Abner was a prospector, owned his own mining company and held a patent for an improved harness trace. I was told that William did not see action in WW1 ; made it to the front but died of pneumonia but that may or may not be factual. If you have anything more about him I would be interested in seeing it. - Carl Dunphy

From the 1911 census,

Gordon, Abner, head Feb 1872
Gordon, Jennie wife Nov. 1867
Gordon, William son Oct 1884

There was another Gordon family below that so I think I mixed them up : Thomas and Mary Gordon and son Harry and daughter Myrtle.

Sorry for the mistake and thanks for the information.

Abner C. Gordon was b. Dutch Valley, Kings Co., NB 3FEB1871 (4JAN1869 in 1901 but, by his own declaration, in 1871), d. 30NOV1965, buried Penniac Baptist No176 Cemetery, Penniac, St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB, and married York Co., NB 14JUN1893 Jennie Love (b. St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB 11NOV1867 (11NOV1868 in 1901), d. 11NOV1919, buried Penniac Baptist No176 Cemetery, Penniac, St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB), daughter of Thomas A. and Rebecca (Porter) Love.

Abner was the son of Thomas (b. Chambers Settlement, NB or Donegal, Waterford (then Sussex) Parish, Kings Co., NB 4MAY1845 (ca. 1837-43), d. 1915) and Mary (Hamilton, b. 18JUL1850 (ca. 1848-9, ca. 15SEP1847?), d. Cross Creek, Stanley Parish, York Co., NB 5MAR1927) Gordon.

Abner was a weaver, probably employed at the Marysville mills when he married. His mother, Mary Hamilton, was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Mitchell) Hamilton from Ireland about 1844.
His father, Thomas ‘Gordan’, was the son of Thos. (b. NB ca. 1814-5-OCT1896), and Deborah (Thomas, b. NB ca. 1819-26, d. OCT1896) ‘Gordan’ of Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB in 1851. I believe they lived in Dutch Valley and that Thomas, Sr. was the son of John and Elizabeth (ca. 1780-7FEB1856) Gordon originally of Pennfield Parish, Charlotte Co., NB. Elizabeth was a member of a Loyalist family.

Abner’s parents seem to have moved about the province but, when his sister, Adelia Letitia Gordon, was born in 1892 they lived in Penniac
In 1901 the names of their neighbours suggest that they lived in the Penniac area of St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB.

Rebecca Porter was likely Thomas A. Love’s 2nd wife (Mary Jane (Lipset) Love, wife of Thomas A. Love, d. 29JAN1865 age 34 years) and was the daughter of Charles and Mary Porter who came from Ireland to St. Mary’s Parish about 1822.
Children:

1. WILLIAM A. GORDON b. Marysville, St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB 21OCT1895 (2OCT1894 in 1901).

Thomas.
