John had many brothers and sisters some born in N.B. others in Nova Scotia. I'am trying to locate 2 of John's son's - Chalmers R. and Lloyd R.. I'am not sure where in N.B. John was born. Thanks for any help. Sandi USA

This is not a surname that I am particularly researching, but I have a bit of spare time this afternoon, and access to some reference materials, so here's what I've found for you.

1851 Census

In the 1851 census, in Botsford parish, Westmorland Co., N.B. [Wayne A. Gillcash's publication], at page 43:

MCGLASHING
- John, male, widow, age 58, Scotch; Farmer, [entered colony at] Birth
- William, male, son, age 27, Scotch, Birth
- Smith, male, son, age 21, Scotch
- Elizabeth, female, daughter, age 18, Scotch
- Robert, male, son, age 15, Scotch
- Tremain, male, son, age 13, Scotch, Birth
- Benjamin, male, son, age 10, Scotch, Birth
- Mary Peacock, female, Mother, age 65, Scotch, Birth

1861 Census:

In the transcription of the 1861 census for Westmorland county, N.B., also in Botsford parish, Robert and Sara Jane appear as follows [p. 42 of Ken Kanner's book]:

McGLACIAN, Robert, married, head, age 26, native, Farmer, Methodist
- Sara Jane, female, wife, age 25, native, Methodist
- John Richie, male, son, age 4, native, methodist
- Hannah Arimenta, female, daughter, age 2, native, Methodist

McGLACION, J. Smith, male, head, age 31, native, Mechanic, Methodist
- Jane Elizabeth, female, wife, age 26, native, Methodist
- Isabella, female, niece, age 16, native, Methodist
DODGE, Mary Eliza, female, servant, age 17, native, Methodist

1871 Census

In Ken Kanner's transcription of the 1871 census, there is only one "McGlashing" family in Botsford parish, West. Co. On page 45, we have:

McGLACIAN, William, male, age 47, married, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch, Farmer
- Jane, female, age 37, married, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- John F., male, age 13, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- William F., male, age 8, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- Edwin L., male, age 6, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- Charlotte, female, age 4, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- Mary A., female, age 2, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch
- CROSSMAN, Maria, female, age 19, b. N.B., R. Pres., Scotch

There is also Charles Crossman, age 31 & wife Catherine, age 42, with 4 children [see marriage records below], at page 21. Let me know if you need transcription.

The 1881 census is online at www.familysearch.org

In the 1891 census, still in Botsford parish, West. Co., there are 4 "McGlashing" family groupings, led by:

- McGlashing, J. Tweedie, age 30 [alone]
- McGlashing, Smith, age 62 with wife Elizabeth, age 43 [with 3 children]
- McGlasking, Frank, age 33, with wife Margret E., age 27 [with 3 children]
- McGlasking, William, age 67, with wife Jane, age 52 + 6 children

I can send you those transcriptions if you don't already have them.

1901 census is online at www.automatedgenealogy.com. Richie McGlashing and wife Elizabeth, with 6 children [including Chalmers & Loyd] are in Tidnish parish, District H, Cumberland Co., Nova Scotia.

Marriage Records from Indexes compiled by Ken Kanner & V. Bing Geldart:

Good Morning Donald: Thanks so much for your reply to my post. I have been able to view the 1911 census. My hope in posting messages is to also find some family still living in the area - not much luck in a 4 year search - but our mission will continue on. I appreciate very much your time and information. Take Care Sandi USA

Hello,
I am currently researching my paternal line and would like to request some help, if possible. My g-g-grandmother - Mary E Dodge who, according to the 1861 Westmorland County, NB Census was a servant who resided with J. Smith McGlacion, his wife Jane Elizabeth and their niece Isabella. I am wondering where I might find information on why she resided there and not with her parents. From what little information I have Mary was born in the USA (Illinois), but I am also having a hard time confirming that. Mary married Silas Ross in 1871 but it appears she took on the McGlashing name - didn't use Dodge. I am confused. If anyone has any information or could point me in the direction I need to go, I would truly appreciate any assistance. Thank you.

Surnames: McGlashing
Good Morning: I just now came across your post regarding Mary E. Dodge. John Smith McGlashing was my GGG Uncle. I took a quick search thru some of our papers and didn't see any thing more then what you had for Mary (1861 census). I do see that in the 1871 census she is not listed with the McGlashing household.

What exactly is it that your looking for regarding Mary and I'll do some looking.
