I am interested in finding out the history of the late James Hopins and his wife Cotte(Sterling).
Frank abandoned his family in the early 1900's. and the children.,7 boys and 2 girls, were "farmed" out to neighbors.
Is there any truth to his story and would also like to know if family are Irish or of Welsh descent on the Hopkins side.\
Any information would be appreciated.
Thank you

I live in the original Jimmy Hopkins home. I don't know much about him but my family first bought this place after WWI. We were not the first owners after Jimmy. I believe he had five wives, one of whom was a Duncan. I think another was a Snowdon. You can find the latter, if you are interested, on Jim Snowdon'w website. Sterlings did live in this area when I was a child. My mother used to tell a story that one of the owners, when doing some repairs, found a whip hidden in the wall. The story was that one of the sons hid the whip there to avoid being beaten. I have a clipping somewhere with a picture of him and some information but I don't know where it is just now. If you send me your email address I will keep it on hand and send you the information from the clipping when I find it.The clipping probably came from the Sackville Tribune.

Hello Mary,
My grandmother, Laura Sterling was born in British Settlement and was a sister to the Cattie who married this Frank Hopkins. If I can bother you to forward a copy of this article to me it will be appreciated.
Thank you,

Along the way I collected the following note from a correspondent regarding Frank Ernest Hopkins: "Abandon the family about 1912 and lived in Malden, MA. Believed dead, but returned to Sackville in 1949."
A Frank Hopkins is buried in the cemetery at Westcock with the dates 1878-1949. Cottie Jane Sterling is buried in the York St. cemetery in Sackville with the dates 1879-1940. Is this the Frank (1878-1949) who married Cottie?

Hi Doug..yes, this is the Frank Hopkins I am seeking information about. Thank you so much for the dates on my grandmother , Cottie. Now I know where to look to find her death info in cemetery.
My father would not let us meet our grandfather when he returned to Sackville. I remember it vividly when my father learned of his fathers return to Sackville.
It was a very emotional time for him.
Would you know how I could locate photos of my grandparents, Frank and Cottie?
with many thanks..Claire

oops - sorry about that Claire.

I am certainly interested in the children of Frank and Cottie. As I mentioned, Cottie Sterling and my Grandmother, Laura Sterling are sisters, so I'd like to fill in that area of my tree for sure.
Claire - what do you know about Cottie's Grandfather, Cyrus Sterling??? I know he married Judith King and such but especially, would you know for certain who his parents are?
John Sterling and Charlotte Fillmore are not exactly definitely his parents.

Also, I heard a story recently which was basically that after Frank Hopkins abondoned Cottie and the kids in 1912, he married and had another family altogether in the U.S.A., and after this particular wife died he returned and our Cottie took him back in!!! But it is just something I was told - no proof of any of it just yet - I'm only mentioning it in case someone else may have heard this too.

Anyway Claire, I would certainly appreciate information on Frank and Cottie's children, and any Sackville-Sterling info you may have from that particular generation to present.
We recently met some descendents of Hiram Sterling and Lucy Crossman. They went to my Aunts house in Springhill, Nova Scotia and I went to meet them. It appears my family still has quite a few not so distant relations in the Sackville area, so Yes I am interested on any info I can sift through and thank you for the offer.
