CYRUS ANDREW McFADZEN b. Fredericton Junction or Geary, Sunbury Co., NB 17MAY1876 (ca. 1876), d. Taymouth, St. Mary’s Parish, York Co., NB 16OCT1928 age 52 years, m. Fredericton, Sunbury Co., NB 25AUG1897 MARTHA ETTA TILL (b. Burton or Geary, Burton Parish, Sunbury Co., NB 27NOV1880 (ca. 1874), d. 365 St. John St., Fredericton, York Co., NB 12FEB1943 age 62 years, 2 months and 15 days), d/o Henry Holland and Clarissa Maud (Howe) Till.

According to their marriage record, “SCyrus A MFadsen” and “Miss Martha Till” were married in York Co., NB 25AUG1897. The writing in the registration is more of a scrawl. I am not sure was the ‘S’ means, and the ‘z’ could be a ‘g’ and his name might be Cyrus A. McFadgen and hers is also given as Martha E. Till. In a birth record for their daughter, it is definitely a ‘z’. She was, judging by birth records of their children, Martha Etta Till, although why the person making the registration entered ‘E.’ as a middle initial is not clear. Cyrus was also ‘Scyrus’ in the birth record of Howard, so they may have spelt the name that way as people may have tended to use a hard ‘C’.
Cyrus was given first as born in Burton, this was crossed out and Fredericton Junction entered. He was b. ca. 1876, the son of Andrew and Annie McFadzen. She was b. Burton ca. 1874, the d/o Henry and Maud Till. This may be as close to a birth record as we can get. For example,. In his death record, ‘Cyruo’ Andrew ‘MacFadyen’ had his date-of-death entered where his date-of-birth should have been given. The date, above, comes from the 1901 census, which is rarely reliable. However, some birth-dates in 1901 seem accurate. Witnesses may be David McFadzen ‘Ormond?’ (the last name (?) is almost illegible and may be a place) and Annie McFadzen; whom I would believe to be his parents.

Cyrus was a blacksmith in 1908 and in 1918. His father, Andrew McFadgen, was also a blacksmith and died in Geary of a heart attack 21NOV1897 and his age-at-death was estimated roughly as 55-years. Andrew was from Scotland. Cyrus’ mother may have been the Mrs. Ann McFadgen who d. Geary, Sunbury Co., NB 11OCT1894 age 48 years; especially as she was a “Blacksmith’sWife”. Cyrus’ mother was Anna (Annie) Carr. Andrew and Annie were married in the Manse of St. Paul’s Church. Fredericton, York Co., NB 25OCT1865. A son, John McFadzen, d. Aroostook Junction, Victoria Co., NB 22PR1882 age 12 years. This makes it seem that Andrew, as a blacksmith, worked for a railroad.

In 1901, David (16APR1874) and Annie (27JUN1874) ‘McFadgen’ lived with ‘Cyris’ and Martha. In Burton Parish, Sunbury Co., in 1891, were Andrew (50) and Annie (45) McFadzen with sons, Cyrus (15) and David (17).

In Burton Parish, in 1851, the family included:

McFadzen John M Head 40 Scotch Black Smith 1845
McFadzen Janet F Wife 30 Scotch 1845
McFadzen Andrew M Son 12 Scotch 1845
McFadzen John M Son 10 Scotch 1845
McFadzen Annie F Daughter 8 Scotch 1845
McFadzen James M Son 6 Scotch 1845
McFadzen Elizabeth F Daughter 4 Born in colony
McFadzen William M Son 2 Born in colony
McFadzen Jane F Daughter 1 Born in colony

There were numerous Carr’s in Sunbury Co., NB in 1851, including three Ann’s, but her family was likely:

Carr Edward M Head 57 American farmer prop.
Carr Martha F Wife 56 American
Carr Alexander M Son 24 American
Carr Amelia F Daughter 26 American
Carr Samuel M Son 22 American
Carr Whitman M Son 20 American
Carr Martha J F Daughter 18 American
Carr Ashward M Son 15 American
Carr Hannah F Daughter 12 American
Carr Gilderoy M Son 35 American farmer prop.
Carr Mary Ann F Daughter-in-law 24 American
Carr Ann F Granddaughter 7 American
Carr Henry A M Grandson 5 American
Carr Hannah M. F Granddaughter 2 American

They were all born in New Brunswick and the ‘American’ likely indicates Loyalist origins. The names, Whitman (from Wightman) and Darius, suggest connections to the Boone and Yerxa families, and to relatives in Douglas Parish, York Co., NB. Martha (b. ca. 1795) is most likely Martha Boone b. ca. 1794-5, d. 1876, m. Edward Carr (b. ca. 1793-4, d. AUG1861 (or 1866 or 1871)), s/o William Bedell and Sarah (Tapley) Carr; where Martha was a daughter of Loyalists, William and Ann (Hayward) Boone. However, Gilderoy R. Carr m. 6SEP1843 ‘Willie?’ Ann Carr, likely a cousin of some degree. Whitman, Gilderoy’s brother, was James Whitman Carr b. ca. 1831-2, d. 1880, m. Elizabeth (Eliza) Ann Boone (b. 23MAY1835 (ca. 1834), d. 22DEC1909), d/o Samuel and Huldah (Carr) Boone; so the families were very interconnected. The Boone’s are likely descendants of Edward Wightman, the last person burnt at the stake in England for heresy. Edward was, by the way, very guilty.

Martha Etta Till’s father, Holland Till, likely got his forename by way of Andrew Holland Smith who m. Sarah Ann Till. The Till’s were closely connected to the Boone’s, Carr’s, etc. Sarah’s parents were James and Ruth (Boone) Till. Sarah had a nephew, Henry Holland Till. This appears to be Martha’s father, and elsewhere I have Holland as:

HENRY HOLLAND TILL b. ca. 1850-1, d. 24FEB1906 age 57 years, buried Lower Geary Baptist - Asa Carr Cemetery, Sunbury Co., NB, m. the Manse, Burton, Sunbury Co., NB by the Rev. Dr. Brooke 10JUN1878 CLARISSA MAUDE HOWE (b. ca. 1860, d. 12FEB1943), d/o John and Charlotte Howe.
John (b. ca. 1811) and Mary Ann (b. ca. 1831) Howe lived close to the widow, Sarah A. (Carr) Till in Burton Parish. Sunbury Co., NB in the 1851 census, p. 24. This may have been John's 2nd marriage as John Howe m. 26JUN1825 Jane Shannon.
In the same census was the family of William (b. ca. 1784) and Deborah (b. ca. 1789) Howe; with a son, John, b. ca. 1826-8, m. 20MAR1879 Martha Jane Carr (b. ca. 1838). William Howe m. Deborah Buckingham 28APR/1MAY1815. (Two marriages; or one date the license?)

Holland was the son of William and Sarah A. (Carr) Till, and William was a son of James and Ruth (Boone) Till with James possibly the s/o Jacob Till.
