ALFRED FREDERICK L. BENNETT b. JUL1866 (ca. 1865-6), m. 1st Roman Catholic Cathedral, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 15JUL1891 MARGARET POWERS (b. ca. 1853-5, d. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 3APR1898 age 45 years, m. 1st John Small), d/o Richard and Bridget (Kelly) Powers; m. 2nd Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 10JUN1908 KATHERINE (CATHERINE) FRANCES MURPHY (b. Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 21MAY1880 (ca. 1880)), d/o James and Catherine (Barry) Murphy.
When he married the widow, Margaret Small of Germain St, he was a can maker living at 87 Brittain St. and was a bachelor. His parents were James and Henrietta (Henniger) Bennett. Henrietta may have been the Hannah Bennett who died Brittain St., Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 18FEB1896 age 45 years.
She could also be Henrietta Bennet b. NS ca. 1818, d. Saint John West, Saint John Co., NB 4AUG1899 age 81 years; although she was Episcopalian.
A James Bennet b. Ireland ca. 1816, d. (or was buried) Saint John, Saint John Co., NB 29JUN1901. This was the Rev. James Bennet, past Rector of Saint Andrew’s Presbyterian Church.
In the death record of James Thomas Bennett (1856-7AUG1956; buried Cedar Hill Cemetery), James Bennett and his wife, Henrietta, were from England. James T. was buried in St. George’s Cemetery. However, James Thomas Bennett’s marriage record gives his parents as James and Henrietta (Jones) Bennett; so they may not be the same parents. James T. Bennett (6JUN1857), in Brooks Ward, Saint John, in 1901, did have a brother, Alfred Bennett (a widower; JUL1866) and a nephew, Grover Bennett (4JUL1892). Since Grover’s birth record makes Alfred the same who m. Margaret Powers, then James Thomas and Alfred Frederick L. were brothers and Henrietta may have been a Henniger or a Jones. I can find James and family in 1911 in Sydney Ward, but I cannot find Alfred and family although they seem to have been in Saint John Co. at the time.
When he married Catherine Murphy, he was an engineer.
One birth record makes it seem that he m. 3rd Robina Catherine McLeod, but that appears to have been Albert Edward Bennett from London, England.
In Sydney Ward, in 1891, James Bennett (35), wife and child lived next to ‘Heneretta’ Bennett (60). James and Henriatta were both b. NB, but James’ father and Henrietta’s husband were b. England. Henrietta’s father was b. NB and her mother was b. Ireland. The family is Church of England. With her were Harry (30) and Alfred (26) Bennett; and a lodger, Jennie Roberts (16) whose parents were from PEI. Harry and Alfred were ship labourers.
Although Henrietta was b. ca. 1831 in 1891, she was also age 60 in 1881 in ‘Sidney’ Ward, Saint John, Saint John Co., NB. This makes it more likely that she was Henrietta Bennet b. NS ca. 1818, d. Saint John West, Saint John Co., NB 4AUG1899 age 81 years; except that she was b. NB. James Bennet (78) was England, a seaman (James, Jr. was a pilot) and the family was Church of England. In addition to James (24), there were Wm. H. (19, sailor) and Alfred (16, seaman). In 1871, in Portland Parish, the family was James (68) and Henrietta (50) Bennett with Lewis (39), James Jr (14), Mary A. (13), Harry (11), Henrietta (8) and Alfred (6). Lewis was Roman Catholic where the rest were Church of England. This is likely because Lewis was a child of a previous marriage. In 1851, in Duke and Queens Wards, were:

Bennett James M Head 53 English Begger 1823
Bennett Bridget F Wife 36 Irish Begger 1836
Bennett Mary Ann F Daughter 19 *born Begger 1836
Bennett Lewis M Son 9 *born Begger 1836
Bennett Eliza F Daughter 4 *born Begger 1836

The arrival dates, as the asterisks suggest, were likely just the enumerator getting carried away. Also, I am not sure that ‘Beggar’ is accurate, and the word may be ‘Rigger’ (rigging sheets, halyards, etc., on ships) with the enumerator getting silly with ditto marks as he did for the neighbours, the youngest, 8-year-old Horatio Bradshaw, is actively a mariner as is his mother, Martha. Bridget Bennett, wife of James Bennett, d. Reed’s Point, Saint John 28MAY1853 age 50 years.
A daughter of James and Henrietta Bennett was Henrietta (2nd daughter) who d. Saint John 5APR1880 age 15 years. They lived at 311 Germain St. near Brittain St.
James Bennett d. Saint John 26DEC1885. He was b. London, England ca. 1800, had been in Saint John since at least 1840, and had relatives in Boston, MA and Hartford, CT. He lived at 315 Germain St.
In 1878, Alfred Bennett, then age 13, was a witness in the inquest of the drowning death of Thomas McCarthy, s/o Lawrence McCarthy of Brittain St.

Catherine Murphy (21MAY1880), lived in Sydney Ward, Saint John in 1901. Her parents, James (7NOV1846) and Catherine (3MAR1852) Murphy had also Estella M. (26MAY1882), Annie F. (5SEP1883), Lawrence (5JAN1883), Patrick J. (13MAR1886), Elizabeth (8MAY1887), Loretta B. (28FEB1889), Ellen (7MAY1891), Gertrude (7NOV1893) and Sarah (5APR1895). Also with them was Catherine, Sr.’s father, Michael Barry (25MAY1822). Gertrude’s (10NOV1891) birth record, for example, gives her mother as Catherine Barry. It also demonstrates that the 1901 birth-dates are not reliable. Sarah’s birth record gives her as b. 15APR1894. Ellen’s actually gives her as b. 7MAY1889.
James may have been James Murphy b. Saint John 29OCT1847, d. 51 ‘Britain?’ St. 13JUN1924 age 76 years, 7 months and 16 days, s/o Lawrence and Katherine (Daely) Murphy, both from Ireland. There were a lot of James Murphy’s but this one caught my eye. Since Catherine Murphy b. 5MAR1855, d. 51 ‘Britain’ St. 2MAY1925 age 70 years, 1 month and 30 days, and was the d/o Michael and Bridget (O’Neill) Murphy, this seems to be the right James. Especially as Mrs. Bennett, Catherine’s daughter, gave the information on the death record.

Bridget Kelly, moth of Margaret Powers, d. 12MAY1872 age 48 years. She was fron Co. Wexford, Ireland, and left a husband and seven children. They lived at 9 Brittain St. Richard Powers, also from Ramascrane, Co. Wexford, d. 19FEB1888 age 56 years. He lived on Brittain St., but his funeral was from the home of his son-in-law, John Small, at 317 Germain St. Richard was a stevedore. According to the 1851 census of Dukes and Queens Ward, Saint John:

Powers Richard M Head 36 Irish Labourer 1840
Powers Bridget F Wife 27 Irish 1840
Powers Mary F Daughter 2 Born

they arrived in 1840.
