Surnames: Ring, Lane
I am looking for any RING family researchers who may have information on the parents of the Levi Forrester RING who died in Saint John Nov. 6, 1918. Does he have any connection to the Anne LANE who married Levi RING in 1837? Is this a son perhaps(Anne's mother's maiden name was Forrester)? I've backtracked through census returns trying to come up with some clues but, as anyone who is researching West Saint John families knows, the 1851 and 1861 returns, for the most part, no longer exist for that area. I do find him with a Charlotte and Levi in the 1871 census, but it doesn't state whether the younger Levi is a son or grandson. Who was this Charlotte? Is "Charlotte" possibly another name Anne LANE may have had?

In the 1881 census, Levi F. RING is shown as having a wife "Sarah A." who was b. ca 1853. In the Old Cedar Hill Cem. there is a stone for Levi RING 1786 - 1874 He m. Mary Mason WIGHTMAN in 1814 but her name is not on the stone. On the same stone is Sarah A. RING ( Levi F.'s wife) 1851 - 1915, and her son Harvey (prob. after her home in Albert Co) 1877 - 1935. The Cedar Hill office records say there are 6 graves in the Levi RING (b. 1786) plot but doesn't give the other names if any. The "A." in Sarah's name is for "Alice" accoding to her death cert. She was Baptist from Harvey in Albert Co., and they were m. in Ludlow St. Baptist 16 Mar 1874. They did have a Marriage Bond which confirmed her maiden name as COPP. The Co-signer was George RING.

I have posted St. George's Anglican Church Baptisms (West Saint John)from 1826 to 1882 on the Saint John Co. GenWeb site at http://new-brunswick.net/nbgenlinks/Links_Co_Saint_John.htm#... but unfortunately 1844 - 1848 is omitted. So it misses Levi F.'s baptism. But you should mark the link for other west side families. Levi and Sarah's children must have gone to the Baptist Ch.

In the 1881 census, living in the same house as Levi F. and Sarah A. RING is 74 year old Charlotte RING who may or may not be Levi F.'s mother. As you say she is the wife of a Levi RING in the 1871 census. Levi RING m. Anne LANE 18 Jul 1837 at St. George's Ch.

So you have Levi RING ( b. 1786) m. Mary WIGHTMAN
Levi RING m. Charlotte who was b. ca 1807
Levi F. RING b. ca 1844 m. Sarah A. COPP. By the spaces between the 3 Levis, the gravestone and Charlotte living in Levi F's house in 1881 the circumstantial evidence would suggest that the 3 Levis are Levi F., his father Levi ( mother Charlotte) and his grandfather Levi who m. Mary. Sometimes that's all we have to go on. Sorry this is such a jumble Nancy and probably no help but I thought some little fact might connect with yours to solve your mystery. Suzanne Carter

I would say that it is a possibility that after the death of Anne Lane between 1846 (birth of Levi F.) and the 1871 census Levi Ring married in a second marriage Charlotte and the mother of the two children (William 27 and Levi F. 25) on the 1871 census would be Ann Lane.
If like you said the maiden name of Anne's mother was Forrester this is a clue to say that Levi F. Ring was a son to Anne Lane.
Could Charlotte be a widow Gough (Goff) and be the mother of Eunice Gough 19 yrs old listed with the family in 1871.
All this to be verified in some way.
Hope this could be of some help to you.

Thank you very much for your reply Suzanne.

I've since found an old posting (2002) here on the Saint John boards by a gentleman named Norm who stated that the Levi who married Ann LANE was born circa 1816 and was the son of Levi (1786-1874) and Mary Ann Wightman. No follow ups were posted on the query and another he posted, which I replied to when I first started frequenting the boards, went unanswered. "Assuming" the information in the post I reference above is correct, it would appear that the Charlotte in the census records was the second wife of Levi (1786-1874), and Levi Forrester's step-grandmother.

I'm still holding off adding anything based on the age of Charlotte (Unknown) Ring. If the age in 1881 is close to accurate, that puts Charlotte as born around 1807 which certainly DOES fit in where Ann LANE likely would place as her younger sister Caroline Matilda (LANE) NICE was listed as being the 5th daughter of Capt. George Lane in Caroline's 1851 death notice in Danny Johnson's Vital Stats (Caroline was born around 1809). It definitely wouldn't be the first time I have encountered the same person being referred to by two different names in various records, so either Ann LANE was Charlotte Ann LANE or they are two entirely different people. Definitely calls for some more digging!

I've seen the records for the baps you have posted and it has been very helpful with other Westside families that tie into my research, so thank you for your work on that.

Just incase anyone else does come across this that is researching the RING family, I've checked my Cedar Hill Records CD and in the family plot owned by the elder Levi are listed as follows:
Grave 1 - Sarah Jane Ring died 19-Sep-76
Grave 2 - Donald Harvey Ring died 18-Nov-90
Grave 4 - Harvey Ring died 4-Nov-35
Grave 5 - Sarah E Ring died 18-Sep-1915
Grave 6 - Helen McCollum (moved) died 24-May-37
Grave 0 - Levi C Ring died 10 Sep 1874

I;m not sure but (from memory) but I think Charlotte is Charlotte Everitt from Nova Scotia. What I suspect is that Levi Sr. (born 1786) married Charlotte Everitt after the death of his first wife who died in 1834, I have that marriage at 1843.

The 1871 census shows him with his 2 grandsons Levi Forrester and William. It is possible that Levi Jr and his wife, Ann Lane died before 1871.

Suzanne, you don't happen to know if St. Jude's records have also been posted somewhere, do you? I know they are on microfilm up at the library, but thought I'd ask incase they were.

Suzanne, have you moved your St. George's records somewhere else? I've been trying to access them but am getting a webpage not available error.
