Sand Cove Road Pauper's Cemetery

There is a cemetery on Sand Cove Road, just past the road down to McLarens Beach, on the right hand side (if you are heading away from the city). It is a small forest clearing without proper headstones. My grandmother always called it the 'Pauper's Cemetery'.

Does anyone know what the actual name is for this cemetery or if there is any information available on it? My grandmother said that they used to bury people there from the provincial hospital.

Thanks Sue. Does the list have much information, or is it a list of names? I am looking for Robert Ross (d. 24 Jul 43). I am curious about anything else you know about it (i.e. for how many years was it used?, approx how many people are buried there...).

Hi Pamela

According to the list I have Robert Ross is buried their and they have him listed as dying on July 25, 1943 (he is listed as #142A - not clear of what that means)

There is very few stones in this graveyard, down along each side of the graveyard is a fence with wood plaques on them, these plaques have (or did have) the names of people buried their. Only a few of the plaques you can get anything off of.

There is also a Daniel Ross who died Feb 23, 1944
(listed as 147)

Also - David Ross who died March 28, 1948 (listed as 190)

There is approximately 290 people listed that do not have headstones - the list goes from 1934 - 1964.

The people with headstones are out of the above year ranges.

Hope this helps

Sue

I recently took photos of the existing stones in the cemetery, if anyone is interested in them.

Sue:would there be any names connected with Lorneville on that list? The names I'm specifically looking for are Knox and McLaren. Also, was there a church situated there at some point?I ask because the walkway almost looks like an old foundation.

Hi

Checked the list of people presumed to be buried at the Provincial Hospital Cemetery on Sand Cove Road in Saint John. I have a list of 290 people and there is a couple that I cannot make out last name at all but out of what I can make out there are not people with the surname of Knox or McLaren. Hope this helps.
