ALLAN DORBYSON, m. Montreal, Quebec 13OCT1905 ETHEL MAY HIGGINS (b. ca. 1889), d/o James Reuben Mary Elizabeth (Elliott) Higgins.
Allan and Ethel apparently eloped to Montreal. A marriage announcement in the Saint John, “Daily Sun”, 16NOV1905, read:
DARBYSON-HIGGINS
“An Announcement which will be read with some surprise is that of the marriage of Miss Ethel May Higgins, daughter of Reuben Higgins of Indiantown, to Allan Darbyson of Montreal. The marriage took place in Montreal on October 13th, but it was not until yesterday that the bride’s friends here learned of the interesting event. The ceremony in Montreal was performed by Rev. Mr. Henderson, and Mrs. Darbyson returned to her home shortly afterwards. Mr, Darbyson will reach the city next week and the bride and groom will make their home here.”
Ethel Higgins (1889) was the d/o Jas. R. (b. Eastport, ME, US 1859) and Mary (1861) Higgins in 1901. Her parents were James Reuben and Mary Elizabeth (Elliott) Higgins.
There was an Ethel May Higgins, b. Sussex Parish, Kings Co., NB ca. 1890, a nurse, who was divorced and m. 2nd Moncton, Moncton Parish, Westmorland Co., NB 19JUN1937 Newton Pineo Wilson. She was a d/o Joseph and Sarah Rebecca (MacFarlane) Higgins. Joseph (35) Higgins,in Cumberland Co., NS in 1901, was given as b. England. Rebecca (36) and Ethel (12) were both b. NB. Ethel Mae Higgins m. 1st Cumberland Co., NS 3DEC1913 J. Israël Alex Poirier. Ethel May Wilson b. NB 8MAR1889, d. Amherst, Cumberland Co., NS 24JUN1959.
There was also a Joseph Robert Dorbyson b. Pictou Co., NS 21OCT1881 (ca. 1886), d. Campbellton, Restigouche Co., NB 15NOV1959, s/o Solomon and Matilda (Parker) Dorbyson, who m. 17JAN1907 Mary Alma (Marie-Alma?) LeBreton and lived in Loggieville, Northumberland Co., NB in 1909.
A Salomon Dorbyson b. Montreal (or Beauharnais), Quebec ca. 1856 (1840?), d. Bathurst, Gloucester Co., NB 2FEB1936 age 96 years, m. Restigouche 16MAY1923 Jane (Annie) Crawley/Crowly. Solomon (Salomon?) was the s/o Robert and Catherine (Brown) Darbyson with Robert being from Belleville, Ontario. Solomon’s first wife, Matilda (Parker) Darbyson was b. Quebec ca. 1849, d. Campbellton 11MAY1921, and was the d/o Thomas and ‘Delona?’ Parker from England.
In Chatham, Chatham Parish, Northumberland Co., NB in 1902 was a William Darbyson b. Belleville, Ontario ca. 1864, d. Bathurst, Gloucester Co., NB 30OCT1946, m. Alice Flood. He also m. Bathurst 31MAR1931 Margaret Ann (Annie) Roberts (b. 26MAY1902, d. in childbirth 6MAY1932), d/o James and Catherine (Cook) Roberts. William was also a s/o Solomon and Matilda Darbyson. In Capbellton, Restigouche Co., NB in 1919, there was a Robert Henry Darbyson who m. Nettie Young.
Allan Dorbyson may have been the Allen Darbison in Madawaska, then part of Victoria Co., NB, in 1901, b. Ontario 20FEB1886, s/o John (b. Quebec 29FEB1850) and Mary (b. Nova Scotia 15OCT1860). Other children were Brown (daughter, 1JAN1884), James (10OCT1889), Eliza (27FEB1890), Laura (4MAY1891), Edward (8MAY1893), ‘Johny’ (10MAY1894), Walter (10AUG1897) and ‘Agness’ (7AUG1900). All were born in Ontario, except Agnes who was born in New Brunswick. There was also a grandson, David Darbison b. NB 29DEC1899. John, Sr. was a farmer and tinsmith, English and a Methodist. Mary was French (Acadian?) and also a Methodist.
In the birth record of their son, Theodore Reuben Darbyson (b. Saulnierville, Digby Co., NS 20MAY1904), Mary was Mary ’Sounier’ but likely Saulnier is more accurate. John was a tinsmith from Montreal and Theodore registered his birth in 1925.
In Comeauville, Digby Co., NS in 1891, William (43) and Mary S.? (41) ‘Darbison’ had a daughter, Clary (9). Mary and Clary were b. NS, but William’s birth place (‘Q’ or ‘G’?) is difficult to decipher. This may not be John, as there are not enough children based on the 1901 census, but next door were the family of ‘Lebare’ (58) and Mary ‘Margrit’ (50) Saulnier. William’s parents were from England. By 1901, Marie Darbison (21OCT1843) was a widow. See:
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nsdigby/census/1901/comeau...Also in the census was Willie Darbison (18JUL1895), given as a son of John (23OCT1876) and Clara (21MAY1880) Saulnier, so Willie is likely Clara’s son.
A John (54) and Elizabeth (45) Darbyson were both from England, and lived in Port Neuf, Bourg-Louis Co., Quebec in 1881. Children were Marsha Jane (8), William (18) and John (14). Marsha Jane is given as born in England, as is William, but John, Jr. was born in Quebec. They were in Port Neuf, St.-Raymond Co., Quebec in 1871 when John (43) and Eliza (37) Darbyson had Martha Jane (12), William (8) and John (4). In this case they are all given as born in Quebec, but it appears that ‘Marsha’ in 1881 was a bit older than 8-years and likely b. in England. Eliza was Irish.
John Darbyson, widower of Eliza Gilkison, left a will dated 24MAR1897 and transcribed at:
http://www.pbalkcom.com/valcartier/Wills/DarbysonJohn.htmHe mentioned a son-in-law, Herbert Henry Brown who m. 1895 Elizabeth Etta Darbyson (d. 1992). Herbert and Elizabeth later moved to Abrams, Wisconsin.
It would appear that the John in Madawaska in 1901 (b. 29FEB1850) was not the John in 1881 (b. ca. 1867) and 1871 (b. ca. 1867). This younger John is said to be John George Darbyson b. Bourg-Louis, Portneuf, Quebec 22AUG1866.
Allan Darbyson may have been the same who died or was buried 12MAR1927, and is buried in Mount Royal Cemetery in Montreal. There were a number of persons of that surname buried there.

Ruben was also known by his middle name, Allan or Allen. Sometimes as Allen Reuben.
The children are not in oder-of-birth as some of them were born too recently to give out even approximate birth-dates.
In 1911 Reuben ‘Dobinson’ lived with his grandparents, James R. (JUL1856) and Mary E. (AUG1856) Higgins in Saint John and with their three sons, including his namesake, Reuben (James Reuben II) Higgins.
