Angus McLellan -- 1901 Census

There is an Angus Mclellan , wife Sarah and eight children listed in Addington A-3 Page 5-1901 Census

I would like to find out if this family were formerly from Cape Breton.

The Angus I have, had a wife Maggie but the census shows Sarah. Margaret Sarah was a popular combination of female names, and it is possible this is the people I am looking for.

The dates I have for Angus and Maggie correspond with the census dates
for Angus (1840) and Sarah. ( 1851)

Thanks for any help.

Angus McLellan and wife Sarah Purdy had a child baptised in Campbellton on May 91 by the name Ida Merivina - he was a train conductor.
By the maiden name of Sarah may be you could figure out if this is the Angus you are looking for.

Hope this help

On the birth certificate affidavit of Arthur McLellan it is said that his father Angus was from Antigonish NS and was a Railway Conductor - This affidavit was made in 1951 by Nellie McLellan daughter of Angus living in Glassport Pennsylvania

Sarah Purdy and Maggie are two different person because in 1881 you could find Angus McLellan living with Maggie and in the same year census Angus McLellan was with his wife Sarah Purdy.
Now there is a marriage for Angus McLellan (born 1839) son of Neil McLellan and Catherine on October 13, 1875 in Inverness NS to Maggie Gillis (born 1850) daughter of Malcolm Gillis and Mary
Hope this will be of some help to you

Yes.. I found this and I am sure Maggie and Sarah are married to two different Angus MacLellan's.

I found them on the 1881 Census for Whycocomagh, NS but can't find them beyond that. The would be 62 and 51 in 1901 so should still be living.

Thanks for your help.

ANGUS McLELLAN b. 12JUN1840 (in 1901) was a train conductor when he married Westchester, Cumberland Co., NS 30MAR1875 Sarah Amelia Purdy. He was the son Laughlin and Catherine McLellan. the marriage record simply states that he was born in Nova Scotia. On the birth record of their son, Frederick Gerald 'MacLellan', Angus was b. Pleasant Valley, NS. On Arthur's birth record it suggests Antigonish.

Angus 'MacLellan', a retired conductor, d. 55 Cameron St., Moncton, Moncton Parish, Westmorland Co., NB 18JUL1925. His death registration states that he was b. Antigonish, NS 12JUN1836, the s/o John and Mary (MacGillivary) MacLellan, both b. Scotland. This according to Angus' son, Gerald.

There is a Pleasant Valley in Antigonish Co., NS. The two Anguses above seem to be the same person. Especially as Sarah Amelia (Purdy) MacLellan (4FEB1851-5JUN1923) died at the same address, was the daughter of Edwin J.? and Jane (Black) Purdy of Westchester, NS, according to her daughter, Milla MacLellan. The differences in birth dates is a minor and all-too-common matter. The differences in parents is unusual. I think his parents were Laughlin and Catherine, as he stated when married. In 1871, in Arrisaig, Antigonish Co., was Angus 'McLellon' (40), with his mother, Catharine (80) and a sister, also Catharine (30). Next door was Ronald 'McLellon' (b. ca. 1821), with a wife, Catharine (38). All, except Catharine, Sr., were b. NS and she was b. Scotland. I do not think this was the Angus McLellan who m. Cape George, Antigonish Co., NS 24NOV1868 Mary Hannahan, and who was b. NS ca. 1840 the s/o Angus and Catherine McLellan. On the other hand, Catherine McLellan b. Scotland ca. 1791, d. Antigonish Co., NS 14NOV1875 age 85 years, as was reported by Angus McLelland of Summerville. Her maiden name seems to have been Catherine McIsaac (entered under 'Occupation and or dead'). To make it more confusing, Ronald McLellan reported the death 11NOV1876 of Catherine McLellan (b. Scotland ca. 1794), age 82, widow of John with a note, as before, but this time as Marg't McIsaac. There were, of course, other Angus McLellan's in Antigonish Co., NS in 1871 including especially Angus b. ca. 1828 with a wife, Margaret (ca. 1841) in Morristown; Angus (ca. 1853), s/o Donald (ca. 1812) and Catherine (ca. 1820) McLellan; and in the town of Antigonish, Angus McLellan (ca. 1841), s/o Archibald (ca. 1805) and Catherine (ca. 1807) McLellan.

There may have been more McLellan's than Chisholm's in the area.

Anyway, it seems that Angus was born in Antigonish Co., NS and, maybe, his parents were John/Laughlin and Catherine (McIsaac?) McLellan.

Thomas.

Hi Thomas

Wow , Thanks for all the information.

This does not seem to be my Angus. I was told he moved to New Brunswick, and this Angus was the closest I could find.

My Angus was from Cape Breton and was Presbyterian.

Thanks you for all your work.. Next time through Whycocomagh, I owe you a cup of tea.

The Angus who married Sarah Purdy, was a rail conductor and lived in northern New Brunswick later dying in Moncton was, from at least three sources, born in or near Antigonish. He was also, as far as I can tell, Presbyterian. If your Angus McLellan was from Cape Breton then he was a different Angus. Would you know when he was born or anything else about him?

Thomas.

Hi Thomas

My Angus was born in North Uist, Scotland, emigrated in 1845, was raised in Whycocomagh, CBI. and married to Maggie Gillis in Whycocomagh, Cape Breton in 1875. Copy of marriage certificate.
They are found in the 1881 Canadian Census, Whycocomagh. They seemed to disappear after.
Local lore says they moved, possibly to New Brunswick. My search for Angus, in NB. had an Angus in Restigouche and Westmoreland. Maybe Maggie died and Angus remarried.
Thanks for your input.
