Do you have a picture of Captain Flower or know where I can find one of he and/or the officers of the 1st Batt. of the Rifle Brigade? I'm researching the group. Thanks, Tim Jenkins

Re: Reed, Benjamin Merritt

Hmmm.. possibly a very interesting case. Though I'm not related, I tend to have an interest in most anything dealing with Queens Co, NB - - - ... In any case, I decided I'd use what tools I have at my disposal to see what I COULD find on your Benjamin... here goes that process... it might take some following...

Starting with the "knowns" you provided, I tried my best to fill in the UNKNOWNS, resulting in these sometimes hard-to-follow notes:

Sarah A. Reed, b. abt. 1889 at St John, NB, d/o Benjamin M. Reed and Martha Louise Northrop, d. Monson, Hampden Co, MA at the Mass Hospital for Epileptics on 12-Feb-1905, she was buried in Everett, MA, 15-Feb-1905. On her death record, Benjamin is listed as b. St. John, NB, but MARTHA is listed as b. Queens Co, NB.

Upon further digging, Martha was Benjamin's first wife, who died in the 1890s, in either NB (if before 1894) or POSSIBLY in MA (if after 1894)

1900 US Census for Boston, MA:

Benjamin Reed, b. Jun-1861, Canada, immig year 1895, married four years. (likely in US)
Marie L., b. May-1876, NY, father b. France, mother NY, her childcount being 1/1, indicating she was only mother of Clarence, and not Sadie or Percy, so surely Martha Louise was biological mother of the two elder children.

Percy V, listed as stepson, b. Apr-1890, Canada (believe son, and only stepson to Marie, who is NOT HoH in this case - bad enumeration). Both parents, b. Canada.

Sadie A., b. Mar-1888, Canada (same who passed in 1905)

then Clarence A., b. Feb-1897, MA.

Clarence Emile Reed (not "A", apparently), was b. 07-Feb-1897, Boston, to Benjamin and Marie.

Benjamin m. Marie L. Leborde on 26-May-1896, at MA, he was b. @1860, s/o David Reed and Sarah A. UNK. She was b. @1872, d/o James and Mary Leborde.

So, there's the answer. Benjamin married Martha Louise Northrop in NB, she died, he came to US, married Marie, had Clarence in Boston. Had Percy and Sarah/Sadie in NB.

Benjamin b. 1857-1862, depending on record/source.

In 1920, in Somerville, MA with wife, Marie L., a son, Otis R. Reed b. @1905, MA. His son, Percy J., b. @1890, NB, and an Ella Ames, aged 72, b. MA, probably housekeeper.

Per some family trees, Benjamin listed as b. 19-Jul-1859, Queens Co, m. Lavinia Northrup. (close).

Looks like Benjamin (REID) was working as a "servant" for a Belyea family in Wickham, Queens Co, NB in 1881 census, aged 23.

There WAS a David A. Reed, b. Ireland about 1823, d. St. John, NB on 25-Sep-1893. And he, apparently, is same who married Sarah Belyea.

Was HE the father of Benjamin Merritt Reed? He died in Fairville, and left a wife and six children. One of this David's daughters was married to a Mr. H. P. Allingham. She died a couple of years after her father, around Jun-1895, also in Fairville.

David Reed was married to Sarah Belyea, had Anny (Anna Jane) in 1856, in 1861 census for Wickham, Queens Co, NB, there IS a Benjamin ?Dingley? in the same household, aged 4 in 1861. apparently a pauper. COULD that be Benjamin Merritt Reed?

In 1871, same location, We have David 45, Sarah A 41, Anna Jane, 15, and a Benjamin RICHARDSON, 13, is this the same Benjamin as in 1861?

Though some show David died in 1872, he is listed as David REID in 1881 census, Hampstead, Queens Co, NB, with Sarah A., 50, and Anna J. 24.

Benjamin may WELL have been born in St John, but under what name? If he IS the pauper being cared for by a "foster" family as early as 1861 (aged 4).

From what I can surmise, the 19-Jul-1859 DOB at Queens Co, NB is taken from Benjamin's naturalization record, in Cambridge, MA on 15-Mar-1916. How accurate it is, is another question.

I'll see what more I can dig up, but please run this information against what you DO have, and maybe some of it will make sense?!?!?!

Ian - do you have Peter Wallis in your family tree? He too is from the Arnold side.

Details - part came from family tree work done by Phillips family in 1930s and 1990s. My father - RHD Phillips wrote a family history and I assisted with some of the Pride records.

I have the ship's journal records for Pride and Phillips. After comparing their overlapping records and viewing the requests for Ontario land in 1836 (after they moved from NB) it became apparant what happened. Pride changed his name to Phillips after "running from service" in Halifax. And when applying for land Edward used some of the details from his shipmate's history.

Let me know if you want some details. I have held the actual records from the British Navy.

Robert Alexander Bell Phillips (Pride)

Not sure if they plan to keep going and re-institute the full First Families files to the website, or, if this month signals the end of the sharing of such files publicly?

I'm hoping, they are just in the midst of a site upgrade, and that, in time, we'll see these files, once again, available to the public.

Cheers,

Jared
Grandson of John Ford PRICE (1787-1859)+ Mary OBLENUS (1788-1867), and Abner TAYLOR (1792-1858) + Deborah OBLENUS (1792-1820)

who was married to Augusta KIERSTEAD (1865-1948) d/o Abraham KIERSTEAD (1834-1899) and Jane FOWLIE (1840-1932). Granddaughter of Daniel KIERSTEAD (1809-1882) + Huldah GRAY 809-1889) and William FOWLIE (1798-1891)+ Matilda KENNEDY (1819-1900).

From Census records and family stories, it looks like they lived in Canaan Forks, or "Brunswick Parish" in New Brunswick.

I would love to get in touch with anyone doing research into these families - even if just double check these dates, and fill in some gaps! And I'm more than happy to share what I've found.

I am a descendent of Dennis Price and Augusta Kierstead through their daughter Helen Willa PRICE who married Samuel GREENLAW in Aroostok County, Maine.

Thanks in advance!
Suzanne

Hi My name is Jeremie,

While I'm not teaching I like to spend some time to explore the forest for things long forgotten :)

Last year I've started working on a project to document some of the overgrown cemeteries in the province. Trough this site and from my travels I've gathered a fair bit of information and I've begun photographing some of the cemeteries. I'm hoping to put that information online at some point when time allows it. My project suffered a setback last summer when my grandma died. At that time it was to painful to go cemetery hunting.

I'm hoping in the spring to start documenting some of these old overgrown cemeteries again :)

At the moment I'm gathering data and starting to plan out some trips :)

If you have some information on an overgrown abandoned cemetery in the area I would love to here about it :)

I can be reached at jeremielandry@rogers.com

I will reply back but due to my busy schedule it may take a bit :)

A cousinf of mine I'm trying to get background informaiton on is Nivan (Nevin) McLean who married Laura Ferguson and later Maud Fulton in New Brunswick, Canada. Nivan's parents were Frederick B. McLean and Damie Ferris, although I've seen her name spelled out as Diademia, or something like that. I'd love to get more connections with these people. Could you help me out?

Dear Robert,

Thank you for posting this. If I may ask, where did you learn of the story behind Alexander Pride and his adventures?

I have traced my ancestry back to Edward (Alexander Pride) Phillips by way of his daughter Margaret Jane Phillips (b.1815, d.1884), who married Robert Arnold (b.1807, d.1875).

I have read similar stories online of Alexander Pride's name change while jumping ship in Halifax, but would like to know where the story was first told or transcribed. Do you know if there are any records (i.e. ship's manifest, biographies, town histories, etc.)?

Thank you for your time, and happy searching!

Best,
Ian

The date of 1796 seems to be crucial to the Phoebe versus Elizabeth problem. All on the same date, Elizabeth as wife of Abial is baptized along with the children of Abial and Phoebe.

Since a daughter Phoebe is baptized on the same day, perhaps Phoebe the mother started using Elizabeth as her given. OR Elizabeth was a second wife.

Also, I'm not seeing a lot of name patterning for the mother Phoebe.

Sara

Gagetown Baptisms

Briggs, Eizabeth 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Adult wife of Abiel Briggs

Briggs, Ephraim 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Briggs, Abiel & Pheby

Briggs, James 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Briggs, Abiel & Pheby

Briggs, Mary 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Briggs, Abiel & Pheby

Briggs, Mercy 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Briggs , Abiel & Pheby

Briggs,Pheby 24 Jul 1796 Wickham Briggs, Abiel & Pheby

Briggs, Elisabeth 29 Jun 1800 Wickham Briggs, Abial & Elisabeth

Briggs, Lyddia 29 Jun 1800 Wickham Briggs, Abial & Elisabeth

Briggs, Sarah 29 Jan 1809 Waterboro Briggs, Abial & Elizabeth

Briggs, Abial 29 Jan 1809 Waterboro Briggs, Abial & Elizabeth

Briggs, Diadama 17 Apr 1810 Sheffield Briggs, Abial & Elisabeth

Briggs, Elijah 17 Apr 1810 Sheffield Briggs, Abial & Elisabeth

Briggs, George Augustus Frederick 17 Apr 1810 Sheffield Briggs, Abial & Elisabeth

Briggs William Henry May 1816 Waterborough Briggs, Abial & Elizabeth Abial is farmer

Looking over my notes, I see there were several Abial's and Elizabeth's! The first Abiel (son of John Briggs and Sybel Chase) was born in 1760 and married Elizabeth Chase (no date for the marriage).

Abiel and Elizabeth had the following children: Mercy, Mary, James, Ephriam, Phobe, Lydia, Elizabeth, Sarah, Abiel, Elijah, Diadema, George, William H. and Sybel.

Since I am from the line of William H., the following information is from his line. He was born in 1816 and had 9 children, 2 of whom were:
Abiel born 1846
Sybel born 1854

The only mention of an Ephriam and Phobe was that they were children of Abiel and Elizabeth (Chase) Briggs and they were siblings of a younger Abiel and Sybel.

It makes it confusing when the same names were used generation after generation. You then need dates to correspond with each name to be certain who you are talking about.

Hope this helps a bit. I'm still on my first cup of coffee too.

Do you have any more information on any of the above mentioned names? I would be interested if you do.

We have no further information on Ephriam, only that he was a son of Abiel and Elizabeth and a brother to an Abiel and Sibil.
Sorry, some of my edits did not take. Not sure when the Phoebe connection took place, if at all. Have her listed as his first wife, but if married, would have more likely been AFTER he was married to Elizabeth Chase. I still haven't had my first cup of coffee, so I'll use that as my excuse. :-)

Jared
Malcolm,

I'm assuming you mean Abiel Briggs and Elizabeth Chase had 13 children. I also have indications Abiel had been married prior to a Phebe/Phoebe UNK and had at least one child named Ephraim Briggs, but he was born in @1792, which, if true causes some serious wrinkles. Namely, I show Abiel married Elizabeth in or around 1788, which would then indicate he must have married or been with Phoebe by 1792, only four years later. That would surely impact even the ability to have 13 children with Elizabeth. Am interestted on any information you might have on Ephraim. Perhaps, he was truly a son of Elizabeth, and not Phoebe? Also, I believe you meant William H. BRIGGS, not William H. Abiel as you noted him in your post.

Abiel, their son, was born 1760 and married Elizabeth Chase. They had at least 13 children, one being Wiliam H. Abiel was my great great great grandfather on my mother's side of the family.
Malcolm Earle Gilchrist
Cambridge-Narrows, NB
506-488-1543

Barton in Cumberland Bay

Hi,

I've been trying to trace my daughter's paternal side, which is Barton and more specifically a Mansfield C Barton and his parents. There seems to have been two Mansfields.

I'm NOT looking for the one married to Rebecca Chase but one who eventually married Selina Hunt and lived in the Restigouche area. (Both families are on the 1911 census so I think I can safely say they're two different people)

On two of his children's birth records, Mansfield is listed as being born in South Devon, NB and Grand Lake, NB. His marriage simply says Queens County. His death cert says he was born in Cumberland Bay. On his marriage it lists his parents as a James & Annie (If I'm interpreting right) and on his death, his father is listed as William. I cannot seem to find him on early censuses either with his family.

If anyone in the area knows of any info that could help, I'd appreciate it. Thanks.

Jacqueline

I am not familiar with the painting, but would you be talking about Thomas and Elizabeth Gilbert from Young's Cove, Queen's County? I'm researching this family, who hailed from Cornwall, England in 1835 with their six children.
Debby
Here are a few bits and pieces that might help:

From PANB (sons of James and Mary):

Son Theodore Wilmot Brown b. 24-Nov-1897, Browntown, Queens Co, NB. Carleton married Abigail Cole. He died 19-Mar-1885, Hibernia, Queens Co, NB. I suspect I may have the marriage in my Queens Co, Marriage book.

His parents, according to one source, anyway, were John Haines Brown, b. 19-Feb-1800, in Rey?, NY (thinking they meant Rye) d. 11-Feb-1879, Hampstead, Qu Co, NB. He married Lydia, apparently, in Jul-1821, had John Haines Brown, Jr. in 1823, and other children followed...

Lydia b. 15-Mar-1800, Wickham Parish, d/o David Cole (b. @1760) and his wife, Elizabeth.

Mary McCluskey Brown, d. Hibernia, Queens Co, NB on 25-Feb-1932, aged 67y 9m 13d (b. 11-May-1864, NB). She was married (so James was still living), d/o Owen McCluskey b. Ireland and "Biddy" Shannon, b. Ireland.
Her husband, James, was the informant on the death record. Mary was buried in Pleasant Villa Cemetery, Queens Co. (PANB)

James Edward Brown d. 29-Sep-1934, at the Provincial Hospital in Lancaster, Saint John Co, NB. He had been last residing in Hampstead, Queens Co, NB. He was born in NB on Coles Island, 25-Jan-1861, had been married to Mary E. Brown, was s/o Carleton Brown and Abbie Cole. He was buried 01-Oct-1934 also at Pleasant Villa.

Theodore married Mildred Amy Brown, 25-Nov-1921, at St John City, St John Co, NB. she was 18, b. Lawfield, Queens Co (b. 02-Jan-1905) d/o DeArcy Murray Brown (b. Hibernia) and Annie Teresa Stockford.
