If you are related to Edward Phillips (1790-1845) marrried to Mary Baily I have the story of how he was born Alexander Pride in Bo'ness Scotland, pressed into service with the British Navy, served in the Indian Sea and off the American Coast during the War of 1812, jumped ship in Halifax, changed his name to Edward Phillips, married the minister's daughter and they had 10 children.

I am looking for relatives of the children - Margaret Jane 1815 m Robert Arnold 12 children, John Pride Phillips 1817 m Polly Sharrard 6 children, Mary Charlotte 1819 m George Quantz 7 children, Benjamin 1820 m Amanda Lynde 7 children, Frances 1822 m Sylvester Lynde 8 children, Ann 1824 m Wideman 3 children, James 1826 m Mercy Abigail 7 children, William Charles 1828, Robert Seth 1830 m Alice Magill 3 children, and Susannah 1832-33.

Edward and Mary along with most of the children moved to Ontario and I have family history details for most.

I am also trying to get full details of any Phillips families with the middle name of Pride. There were Phillips and Pride families in the Gagetown, Waterborough areas of New Brunswick before Edward (Alexander) arrived. Any help would be appreciated.

If your history bears out, I am the 4th great grand daughter of Alexander Pride. My father, Charles William Phillips is one of four children of the disinherited son of Frederic Louis Phillips (son of Levi S. Phillips and Barbara Imirie, who came from James Phillips and Mercy Card) and Grace Sullivan, Leroy Phillips. He had a baby brother, who died as a result of being given turpentine to treat a cough. As the story goes as told by my father, from his parents to him: Fred remarried a woman named Bessie after Grace's death and Bessie didn't like Leroy so he was sent to boarding school, and then sent east to attend West Point. During the journey, Leroy met a charming swindler who convinced him to take up with him and get into real estate in New York. As it turns out, at the time there was a real estate bust and Leroy was swindled out of his money. His father and step mother who were quite wealthy, disowned him, and he ended up in southern Indiana working in a psychiatric hospital. He met a woman, Minnie Esther Williams, while working there and they married in 1932. She had a little boy (Dale Edward) already whom Leroy adopted, and together over the next 10 years they had two more sons and a daughter. Leroy died suddenly when my father was 7 years old of heart failure. The Phillips' never contacted my grandmother, nor did they help her with her children. They lived in complete poverty, and Esther married again, to a man named Pillow. Legend has it that Bessie became quite a religious person and they moved from New Mexico to Harrison AK and had a home on "Hill Top Route" to be closer to God. An excerpt from Fred's Obituary (which I have) reads as follows: "Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Bessie Phillips; one sister, Mrs. Effie Rodcap of Meridian, Kan.; one brother, Oscar Phillips of Benton Harbor Mich.; and three grand children." My father was one of the three grand children whom Fred never even met.

Dear Robert,

Thank you for posting this. If I may ask, where did you learn of the story behind Alexander Pride and his adventures?

I have traced my ancestry back to Edward (Alexander Pride) Phillips by way of his daughter Margaret Jane Phillips (b.1815, d.1884), who married Robert Arnold (b.1807, d.1875).

I have read similar stories online of Alexander Pride's name change while jumping ship in Halifax, but would like to know where the story was first told or transcribed. Do you know if there are any records (i.e. ship's manifest, biographies, town histories, etc.)?

Thank you for your time, and happy searching!

Best,
Ian

Ian - do you have Peter Wallis in your family tree? He too is from the Arnold side.

Details - part came from family tree work done by Phillips family in 1930s and 1990s. My father - RHD Phillips wrote a family history and I assisted with some of the Pride records.

I have the ship's journal records for Pride and Phillips. After comparing their overlapping records and viewing the requests for Ontario land in 1836 (after they moved from NB) it became apparant what happened. Pride changed his name to Phillips after "running from service" in Halifax. And when applying for land Edward used some of the details from his shipmate's history.

Let me know if you want some details. I have held the actual records from the British Navy.

Ian,

Do you have any old family photos. I have picture of Margaret Jane and separate one of John Pride Phillips (her brother and whom I am related to).

Still looking for pictures of Edward (Alexander). I have been to his cemetery in Uxbridge.

Hi there - I'm researching this family and would love to see the documentation that confirms this 'switch' of identities. There are so many 'telephone game' repetitions of the tale online that it's hard to tell what's documented fact and what's just legend.

I'm related to the Pride family in Scotland; if the story is true, Alex/Edward is my 5th great grand uncle.

Thanks!

Hello Susan. Our family connection is very close. Our path from Alexander Pride splits off from my grandfather, Arthur Phillips who I believe was Grace's younger brother. I am very curious if you have ever found any documentation about either Alexander Pride/Phillips or William Charles. I have never found a birth or death certificate. BTW, my father, John Phillips (son of Arthur) has been to the cemetery in Uxbridge as well. Also, I just realized that I may have pictures of some family members. I am happy to share but it sometimes takes me a while to get things done. Some of the pics are from my grandmother Louise Phillips' (Art & Louise) album. Something called a "dirty cousin's picnic?" Are you familiar with the Phillips' family (james, jeanne, john, & william) or Rose Phillips' family (Adele, Joanne, Sonny, June)?
