Surnames: DIKEMAN, DYKEMAN, DITEMAN, DIGHTMAN
Hello!

On a deed dated November 9, 1860 found in Houlton, Maine was a reference to Bernard M. DIKEMAN, Parish of Cambridge, Queens County, New Brunswick.

I am wondering whether Wallace DYKEMAN/DIKEMAN/DIGHTMAN/DITEMAN born about 1820 in either New Brunwick or Nova Scotia may have been related.

Can anyone show a link between these two?

Thank you!
Mary

Although John Colwell’s transcription of the baptisms performed by the Rev. Richard Clarke of St. John’s Anglican Church, Gagetown, Queens Co., NB makes it clear that Bernard Manzer Dykeman was a son of Gilbert Hatfield and Dorcas (Manzer) Dykeman; Bernard’s first name appears to have been missed by Jared Handspiker at his compilation on Garret Dykeman’s family at:
http://www.jedh.com/src/genealogy/hpkr/d0003/g0000074.html
This suggests he may have gone by his middle name, and a new search parameter. Handspiker suggests that Bernard (or Manzer) married Sophia Smith; but notes that her maiden name is in doubt. B. Dykeman petitioned for land in Cambridge Parish, Queens Co., NB in 1861. In 1865-7 and 1871, B. M. Dykeman lived at the mouth of the Jemseg River in Queens Co., NB, and was a farmer. He may be the Barnet Dykeman bur. St. James’ Anglican Church Cem., Lower Jemseg, Queens Co., NB; in which case, he d. 29SEP1880 age 73 years. He probably had a son, B. M. Dykeman (1868-1932) (actually likely Bennett Manzer Dykeman, s/o James G. and Rebecca J. (Dykeman) Dykeman, b. Jemseg 11DEC1866; who also appears to have gone by his middle name at times) bur. in the same cemetery, and grandson, B. Manzer Dykeman (1899-1990), buried in Fredericton. To add to the confusion, the PANB records gives the names of these later generations as Bennett Manzer Dykeman. The Bennett (b. 1866) mentioned above also appears as Burnet Manzer Dykeman in his death record (3JAN1932.)

From IGI entries, etc., I make him:

BARNETT (BERNARD) MANZER DYKEMAN b. 18APR1807, bpt. by the Rev. Richard Clarke 14JUN1807, d. 29SEP1880, bur. St. James’ Anglican Church Cem., Lower Jemseg, Queens Co., NB, m. Hampton Parish, Kings Co., NB 2FEB1831 (or 2FEB1830) SOPHIA BEYEA (b. 18MAY1808, d. 17DEC1893), d/o James and Martha Curry (Sherwood) or Beyea. The surname, Beyea, is sometimes given as Belyea; but these were two different families; possibly related, but before 1783. In 1851, the name is Beyea, where Martha appears as a widow in Hampton Parish. I cannot find either Barnett not Sophia in the 1881 census of NB. Didn’t look in Maine.

his parents:

GILBERT HATFIELD DYKEMAN b. 17MAY1769, bpt. Gagetown, Queens Co., NB 26AUG1792, d. 1851, m. Gagetown, Queens Co., NB 10JUL1794 DORCAS MANZER (b. NY 28MAR1777, d. Cambridge Parish, Queens Co., NB 1AUG1862), d/o Barnet and Mary Ann (Lester) Manzer

and Gilbert's parents:

GARRET DYKEMAN (s/o Jacob and Rebecca (Vermilyea) Dykeman) b. Tarrytown, Westchester Co., NY 4MAR1741, bpt. Tarrytown or Sleepy Hollow 6JUN1741, d. 19JUN1813, bur. St. John’s Anglican Church, Gagetown, Queens Co., NB 20JUN1813, m. White Plains, Westchester Co., NY 1766 EUNICE ANN HATFIELD (b. Westchester Co., NY 8MAY1746, bpt. 9NOV1746, bpt. Gagetown 26AUG1792, d. 16NOV1808, bur. St. John’s Anglican Church, Gagetown, Queens Co., NB 17NOV1808), d/o Gilbert and Tamar (Brundage) Hatfield.
Bought Lot 8 in Jemseg of Conrad Gunter ca. 1786.
Rented pew St. John’s Anglican Church, Gagetown, Queens Co., NB in 1792.

Mary, I could not find Sophia in 1881 before. Accidentally I came across her. She was listed under one of her son-in-laws' surname, Colwell. the following may be of interest.

Thomas.

Gilbert William (William G.) Colwell b. 11OCT1855 (ca. 1856-7), d. 5SEP1933, m. at her father’s home, Cambridge Parish, Queens Co., NB 9SEP1880 Harriet Atwood Dykeman (b. ca. 1852), d/o Barnett Manzer and Sophia Dykeman.
In 1881, in Cambridge Parish, they had with them a widow, Sophia Colwell (b. ca. 1809). I assume the was William George (or George William) because he lived very close to George William Colwell, Sr. I suspect Sophia may actually be Sophia Dykeman (b. ca. 1809), wife of Barnett M. Dykeman (ca. 1807) in Cambridge Parish in 1871. This would suggest that William’s wife, Harriet, was Harriet C. Dykeman (b. ca. 1852) Barnett and Sophia’s daughter in 1871, and also that William’s brother, James R., m. Rebecca L. Dykeman (ca. 1849), Harriet’s sister. A marriage announcement gives Harriet Atwood Dykeman, who m. William Gilbert Colwell, as the d/o B. ‘Manzor’ Dykeman. James Rainsford Colwell m. 1878 Rebecca Louise Dykeman. d/o B. M. Dykeman, Esq. So, Sophia, in 1881, was Sophia Dykeman and not Sophia Colwell as the enumerator indicated. She would be, from another posting I made earlier, Sophia Beyea (b. 18MAY1808, d. 17DEC1893), d/o James and Martha Curry (Sherwood) Beyea or Belyea.

William George (or George William) Colwell was a son of:

GEORGE WILLIAM COLWELL b. 4MAR1821, m. SARAH EMILY DYKEMAN (b. Jemseg, Cambridge (Waterborough) Parish, Queens Co., NB ca. 1827-1836, d. White’s Cove, Queens Co., NB 16NOV1891 age 65 years), d/o Jacob and Joanna (Springer) Dykeman.
