Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
I am trying to gather all the descendants of Garret Dykeman. who was loyalist and came to New Brunswick after the American Revolution. One of his daughters Eunice Ann married William Colwell 1809 in Queen's county. If you are connected to this Colwell group and would like to share please drop a note.

Re: Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
Hi
I am looking for a Samuel Colwell, known to have settled in the Douglas Harbour/Scotchtown area of Queen's Co. early in the 1820's. He was Irish, and known to have come to N.B. with at least one brother who settled in Cumberland Bay,and maybe more. A Samuel and George Colwell were in the Queen's Co. militia in 1828, and there was a Robert Colwell in Cumberland Bay. Could they be related to William? If anyone has any info, I would be happy to hear from them. Thanks, Charrie

Re: Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
Sorry Charrie, no connection. My William was a loyalist and came here 1783. I do think yours and Robert are connected as he came abt 1820 directly from Ireland. A June Colwell provided me that bit of information. Unfortunately I have miss placed her email but if you look in some of the old queries you may come across it.

Re: Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
Thanks anyway, Brian. No luck on the June Colwell tip, but thanks for the info on Robert...I suspect they are connected, but would love to be able to confirm it. Good luck on your search! ~ Charrie

Re: Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
Hi Charrie, The Robert Colwell that first arrived in Scotchtown from Ireland 1820 and then settled in Cumberland bay was my GGGgrandfather. He is buried in the cemetery on the Cox Point in Cumberland Bay as Robert Caldwell along with his wife Sarah (Porter). They appear to have been married in Ireland. In my research I have come across them as Coldwell as well as Caldwell. Some of his descendants were born as Caldwells and buried as Colwells. His children were - Joseph, James, Robert, Sarah, Mary Jane, Susan, Elizabeth and William. Not sure if this is of any help or not. I don't know of any siblings of Robert's but that doesn't mean there aren't any. Take Care - Jan

Re: Eunice Dykeman m. William Colwell
Hi Jan Thanks so much for writing...your Robert could very well be my Samuel's unknown brother, since he named one of his 2 sons "Robert" and the other after himself. I have forwarded your very interesting letter to a Janet Colwell in Maine who is looking for her husband's Colwell roots in Queen's Co. and has your Robert's information. According to family legend, "my" Robert (born 1830's, N.B. to Samuel Colwell of Ireland) settled in Cumberland Bay, married Eliza Fraser and had 2 daughters: Betsy (Elizabeth?) who married a James Olmstead, and Athalina, who never married....do you know any of these names? Thanks again ~ Charrie

Colwell/Caldwells of Ireland
Hi Charrie, Perhaps there is a connection here. I looked up Samuel Jr. Colwell in the 1861 census. In case you don't already have this - they are in Canning Parish at Household # 134 Pg # 21
Name/ Sex/ Relationship to head of family/ Race or Place of birth / Religion/ Occupation/ Remarks
Colwell, Samuel / M / He / 31 / Nat / Bapt / Farmer Colwell, Margaret / F / Wi / 34 / Nat / Bapt Colwell, Martha A. / F / Da / 6 / Nat / Bapt Colwell, Annie / F / Da / 5 / Nat / Bapt Colwell, Susan / F / Da / 3 / Nat / Bapt Colwell, Hannah / F / Da / 1/ Nat / Bapt 1 birth in previous year McGinnis, Margaret / F / Se / 16 / Nat / Pres Colwell, Susan / F / Mo / 72 / Nat / Bapt Colwell, Athalina / F / Si / 37/ Nat / Bapt Day, Bradford / M / Se / 27 / Nat / Bapt / G. Labourer Day, Charles / M / Se / 17 / Nat / Bapt / G. Labourer
Athalina would appear to be the sister of Samuel Jr., daughter of Susan (and it would be Samuel Colwell Sr?) I couldn't find anything on Robert. Was he still in Queens County in 1861? Elizabeth and James Olmstead lives at HH# 158, next door to his brothers and sister. Elizabeth, age 35 and James, age 40 have 3 daughters Julia A., 12, Elias, 10, Martha, 8, James W, 6 and Susan, 2.
Interestingly though there is an index for land grant petitions for the same year, 1828, a grant filed jointly by a Robert Caldwell and a James Caldwell. My GGGgrandfather Robert had a son James but he would have only been 12 at the time and an unlikely candidate to apply for a land grant. So perhaps it is an unknown brother. Also in the same year, another petition, along with many other names listed collectively under the same petiton was a Samuel Colwell and a George Colwell.
There has been confusion for years for me over the last name when doing research for the Caldwell/ Colwell/Coldwell. Although my line was definitely Caldwell. When my Ggrandmother Edith Hannah Caldwell Wilson (she was the grandaughter of Robert Caldwell and Sarah Ann Porter, both born Ireland ) died in 1933, it was definitely spelled Caldwell. She had been adamant about the spelling. However her brother Willard James' death certificate 3 years prior to hers reads Colwell. I guess they got tired of the confusion and used the Colwell name, as all subsequent generations are Colwells. When Ezekial Stone Wiggins wrote the collection of articles for the newspaper The Watchman on the different Queens County families roots back around 1876-7, he also referred to Robert Caldwell as Robert Colwell. Those articles were later compiled into the book The History of Queens County. I'm going to try to look up the land petitions and see if I can find a link.Take Care - Jan

Re: Colwell/Caldwells of Ireland
Hi Thank you so much for this information, it really added to the picture, as I had 1871,1891 and 1901. This gives me both a name for the wife of Samuel 1, and for one of the daughters...I'm very happy! Sorry it's taken so long for me to get back to you, but have been following up some ideas your new information gave me.
Census Canning 1871 shows same family with Samuel 3 age 6, Alice age 4, Lemuel A. 2.( Another son, Stephen, was b.1872 ) Their son Samuel (3) Edmond (listed as Sam.M. in Census) was living in Carleton Co. in 1889 where he became acquainted with Susannah Elizabeth Stiles, (presumably daughter of Wm. E and Susan Stiles, 1871 Census Wicklow parish, age 5). Samuel and "Susie" had a daughter, Lena Edna, in 1889(PANB) and were married in 1890 in Centreville, Carleton Co. (PANB) 1891 Census shows them living in Florenceville, Carleton.
Samuel's father, Samuel2, died in May 1890. Census Canning, Queen's, 1891 shows his widow, Margaret with her 2 youngest sons, Lemuel and Stephen (b. 1872), her daughter Margaret (Marshall) and her 2 daughters...and living next door to them were Samuel3, his wife Susie and 1 yr. old Lena Edna. (Their son, Ernest Guy, my Grandfather, was born that Oct., too late for the 1891 Census, but shows up in 1901 at age 9) Presumably they came home when Sam 2 died. WHAT is the point of all this? Well, what was Samuel 3 , whose roots were so deep in Scotchtown,Canning parish in Queen's doing in Carleton Co.?
The 1871 Census Northampton, Carleton shows a family of Colwells headed by James Sr. age 56 married to Mary Ann, with a son George A.age 17 who later (1901 Census) represents himself as George CALDWELL md. to Margaret Matilda Gibson...why? They had a son, Robert Guy, in 1896. Interestingly, Sam.3 and Susie had named THEIR oldest son Ermest Guy (1891).."Guy" being a rather unusual name. Possible connection? Could JamesColwell Sr. (b. cir. 1815) of Carleton Co. be related to Robert Caldwell of Cumberland Bay? And also to Samuel Colwell of Scotchtown? The plot thickens...
To further muddy the waters, a Robert Caldwell was granted 50 acres in Andover, Carleton in 1849, and Casper Caldwell rec. 300 acres in Wicklow parish in 1851, the same parish Samuel 3 Colwell and Susie Stiles were in 1889-91.
Re "my" Robert, father of Athalina and Elizabeth, of Cumberland Bay... elusive character. He may have returned to Saint John, as there are a number of Colwells there, including one Robert Samuel married to Ada Phipps who had a son Walter Samuel 1883-12-06, which is interesting in that Samuel 3 and Susie had a Walter (Owen) in 1896.
Where is Lyon, Queen's? There is a Robert Colwell,d. Feb 9, 1883, age 74 (b. cir. 1809?) in Lyon, Cemetery at the corner of Lawfield and Olinville Roads.(PANB) I've just read this over, and it's a complete jumble...hope you can make some sense of it anyway! What did you find out re: land petitions/grants? There are so many!! Looking forward to hearing what you find. Thanks for your time ~ Charrie

Re: Colwell/Caldwells of Ireland
Hi Jan
Further to the 1861 Census, an interesting note: 2 Gen. Labourers, Bradford and Charles Day resided with the Colwell family ages 27 and 17 respec. I found this: Susan E. Colwell married to Nathn Palmer Day in Burton, Sunbury Co. son b. 1880, Nathan Budd Day.
Hmmmn! ~Charrie
