When Mrs. John Magee (Catherine), daughter of Claudius McCutcheon, died in Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB ca. OCT1895 age 76-years, it was indicated that she was born in Co. Tyrone ca. 1819, came to NB in 1841, settled first at Clowes and later moved to New Ireland in 1870. With them was her cousin, John Magee, whom she married in 1843. She was survived by two, older brothers, John and William McCutcheon. Her father was age 84-years (d. ca. 1846) and her mother was age 89-years when they died.

I cannot find a location for Clowes, except that when John James (or James John) Magee’s daughter married, she gave her father’s birthplace as Clowes, Queens Co., NB. John J. ‘McGee’ was b. North Clones, Queens Co., NB 9NOV1856, d. Hibernia, Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB 27MAY1924, and was the son of John and Catherine (McCutcheon) Magee. (The PANB transcription of the surname in John’s death record is incorrect.) Thus ‘Clowes’ appears to be a mis-transcription of ‘Clones’. Clones is in Petersville Parish. So, in 1861, one would expect to find Catherine and her family in Petersville Parish. Clones is also in CFB Gagetown, which presents several problems as the federal government apparently sequestered or destroyed records in order to diminish protests or later litigation regarding their confiscations of private property.

New Ireland or Hibernia is in Hampstead Parish. It was in the area now part of CFB Gagetown, near Hamilton Mountain. I know the Hamilton’s had connections across the county boundary in Greenwich Parish as some married some of my cousins/aunts, etc. from that area.

The Magee’s were apparently Anglican and, at:
are several baptisms. There are also McCutcheon baptisms noted as:

36 McCutchen Margaret John Jane ? Sep 1846 26 Jul 1847 Petersville
96 McCutchen William John Jane 18 Oct 1849 5 Feb 1850 Petersville
276 McCutchen Glandice Thomas William Rachel 4 Mar 1854 13 Aug 1855 Petersville
277 McCutchen John Robert Glandice Elizabeth 24 Jun 1855 13 Aug 1855 Petersville
294 McCuthcen David James William Rachel 5 Dec 1853 15 Dec 1855 Petersville
521 McCutchen Margaret Jane William Sydney 4 Mar 1871 3 Apr 1871 Lower Clones

From these we find that, around 1850, John’s wife was Jane, William’s wife was Rachel Elder (son’s death record) and that there appears to be a third brother, Glandice (?), with a wife, Elizabeth. There are also photos of the family at:
Isaac Albert McCutcheon (b. South Clones 31OCT1866 (30OCT1867 in 1901)) appears to have been a son of William (b. 15NOV1813 in 1901) and Lucinda (Cindy in Isaac’s marriage record; Boyle) McCutcheon, suggesting William married a 2nd time. William certainly married again and, in 1881, William (67) had a young wife, Rebecca A. (26) and a large family, the eldest of whom is ‘Glond’ T. (ca. 1856), apparently Glandice Thomas in the baptisms above. William was a widower in 1871; see:
and, as well as a son, ‘Gloud’ T., seems to have had a brother, Gloud (b. ca. 1816). His wife seems to have died very recently as the youngest child, ‘Margret’ is only 1 month. However, that wife does not appear amongst, “Deaths within the last 12 months” at:
Rather she is listed in a separate division at:

McCutcheon Synthia F 26 W Meth NB M Mar After Child Birth

J. (Joseph?) Albert McCutcheon (22JUN1857-17NOV1937) was born at Clones the son of John and _____ (Monteith) McCutcheon. His son, Charles E. McCutcheon, stated that J. Albert’s parents were from Belfast. This may be the son of John McCutcheon (50) in Petersville Parish in 1871, Joseph (b. ca. 1857). Other children were Edward (16 or 18) and ‘Margret’ (21).

William McCutcheon (b. Clones 28NOV1848, d. Olinville, Petersville Parish, Queens Co., NB 22AUG1921) has, in his death record, parents John McCutcheon and Jane Monteith (b. Scotland). One might think that William was the William McCutcheon b. 18OCT1849 and baptized 5FEB1850 except that the birth-dates do not match. However, neither birth-date matches that for Wm. McCutcheon (15NOV1850) in Petersville Parish in 1901 and NOV1847 in 1911. In 1891, William McCutcheon was b. ca. 1852. So the accuracy of any birth-date is in doubt, as none really confirms another. Probably the birth-date in the baptismal record has the best bet of being close.

John McCutcheon may be the same who d. Patterson Settlement, Queens Co., NB 25JAN1896 age 81-years. Another John McCutcheon, b. Clones ca. 1832, d. Hampstead Parish, Queens Co., NB 16NOV1914 age 82-years.

All-in-all, the best I can come up with is the hypothesis that John McCutcheon’s 1st wife was likely Jane Monteith. As to whom Jane’s parents may have been, I can only vaguely suggest Samuel Monteith (b. Co. Tyrone ca. 1793, d. Lawfield, Gagetown Parish, 23APR1888 age 95-years). In 1871, he was age 71-years and his wife, Susan, was 73-years.
