His parents were:
62. ABRAHAM (ABRAM) LINCOLN (ARMSTRONG) BISHOP b. 23MAY1875, m. Queens Co., NB 28SEP1904 MATILDA (TILLIE) GRACE (ESTHER) FLEMMING [523] (b. 20MAR1886), d/o Andrew S. and Esther (Easter) (Bishop) Flemming.
In 1911, in Chipman Parish, Matilda 'Fleming' (widow?, MAR1886) is living with her mother and siblings. Listed as her mother's grandsons are: Robert Fleming? (NOV1910), Fred Fleming? (DEC1905), 'Rodyen' Fleming? (FEB1908) and Abram Fleming? (APR1910). Since, of the grandsons, Fred (DEC1805) is Fred Bryden Bishop [621] (13DEC1905), s/o Matilda; then perhaps the other grandsons are her sons as well.
A son was Abram Armstrong Bishop b. APR1910 (ca. 1910), who m. St. Paul's Manse, Fredericton, York Co., NB 30NOV1931 Elsie Hornez (b. Paris, France ca. 1909), d/o Henry and Leocadie (Tondeur) Hornez. Abraham (Abram) was the son of:
6. WILLIAM BISHOP b. Gaspereau, Chipman Parish. Queens Co., NB ca. 1837-9 (OCT1835 in 1901, SEP1838 in 1911), d. 13OCT1923, m. Queensbury Parish, York Co., NB by the Rev. James Tupper of the Baptist Church 7NOV1872 PRISCILLA FLEMMING (b. ca. 1855-6, d. Queens Co., NB 20APR1898 age 43 years), d/o James and Eleanor Flemming.
When married, both were of Chipman, and witnesses were Wm. Henderson and Jas. Flemming. Just shortly before, 10OCT1872, William's sister, Mary, had m. Thos. N. 'Stevison' in the same place.
In Chipman Parish in 1871, 'Percilla' lived with her parents and was age 15.
In the 1871 directory a farmer in Gaspereau, Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB. When married, both she and William were from Chipman Parish, although there were Fleming's/Flemming's in Douglas Parish, York Co., NB as well. Witnesses were William Henderson and James Flemming.
In Chipman Parish in 1881 William was age 42, 'Pricilla' age 26, and they were farming, b. NB, Irish and Baptist. Children were: May Ellen (7), Abraham (6), Jane (4) and Almira (2). Also there was a Sarah Fleming (12) and the widow, Jane Black (b. Ireland ca. 1801) who had been with William's mother in 1871; and who may have been his maternal aunt.
In Chipman Parish in 1891 William was age 52 and a farmer. His father was b. NS and mother Ireland. Priscilla was age 36, b. NB, parents b. Ireland. Children were: Mary (17), Abraham (16), Jane (14), Almira (12), Wilmina (9) and Whitfield (2).
In Chipman Parish in 1901. In the same place in 1911 William was a widower b. SEP1838. With him were: Whitfield (DEC1889) and 'Vilotte' (MAR1885).
William was a son of:
JAMES BURBAGE BISHOP b. Horton Twp., Kings Co., NS 28MAR1797 (ca. 1800), d. Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB 29JUL1871 (or JUL1870 per 1871 census, of lung fever) age 73 years, m. Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB 28MAR1827 MARY JANE FLEMMING (b. Londonderry, Ireland ca. 1807-9, d. Upper Gaspereau, Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB 1879).
James Fleming (b. Ireland ca. 1811-2) and William H. Fleming (Flemming) (b. Ireland ca. 1820) were likely brothers from Ireland, and were living next to each other in Chipman Parish in 1861 and 1871. It is possible that Mary Jane Flemming was their older sister. James and William also lived 'next door' to Mary in 1861 and in 1871. Further away there was also a James Fleming b. Ireland ca. 1818. Two of the earliest Fleming petitioners for land in Queens Co. were Andrew Fleming (1824) and William Fleming (1837). Presumably Andrew was the father of the elder James Flemming and of the William who was his neighbour; both of whom had sons, Andrew. Andrew Flemming received 200 acres in Brunswick Parish, Queens Co., NB 30JUL1833; as did John Black. Jane Black (b. Ireland ca. 1801), living with Mary Jane (Flemming) Bishop in 1871 may have been John Black's widow; perhaps even Mary's sister.
Assuming that Andrew Flemming is probably Mary Jane Flemming's father might be premature; but seems very possible. And Andrew Flemming, Jr.'s (of Canning Parish, Queens Co., NB) estate was probated 1851. This may be the Andrew Flemming of Co. Tyrone, Ireland, came to NB in 1783 as a Loyalist, and settled in the coal mine area of Chipman Parish. He is said to have had eight children. ("History of Queens County 1876", E. Stone Wiggins, page 27). Either this Loyalist was not, in fact, a Loyalist, or he was not connected to William and James Flemming of Chipman Parish, both b. Ireland after 1783. Dr. Wright does list an Andrew Fleming, originally from Ireland, amongst Loyalists to NB in 1783.
'Burbadge' (61) and Mary (52) Bishop were in Chipman Parish, Queens Co., Nb in 1861. He was b. NS, Baptist and a farmer. She was b. Ireland and Baptist. Children were: James (28), William (24), Elias (20), Jane (30), Mary (15), Abel (12) and Isaac (6). In the next two households were 'Burbadge' Bishop (26) and his wife, Amelia (24) and children: Samuel (2) and Esther (5 months); and George Bishop (30), his wife, 'Bulah' (30), and children: Matilda (5), William B. (4) and Mary Ann (11 months).
In 1871, in Chipman Parish, were Mary Bishop, a widow, b. Ireland ca. 1808, Baptist. Children were: Jane (39), William (33), Elias (28), Mary (25), Abel (21) and Isaac (16). Also with them was Jane Black b. Ireland ca. 1801, also a widow.
A son may have been Henry Bishop who m. 1863 Mary Elizabeth Briggs. Both were of Queens Co., NB, and John McJenkin of Saint John Co. co-signed their marriage bond.
James Bishop was granted 35 acres in Chipman Parish, Queens Co., NB 30SEP1873. It is not clear if this was a posthumous grant, or to a son or grandson.
The Bishop's were a new England family (New London Co., CT), that came to Nova Scotia after the Seven-Years War. Some later moved to New Brunswick; Queens Co. and, I think, Westmorland (maybe Albert?) Co. A lot are my cousins which I why I have some stuff on them.
Thomas.
